If Chairman Payne is anxious to vindicate himself why not demand that Mr. Wilhelm's proofs be submitted as agreed upon. The election is about six weeks past, and wo have hoard nothing of tho matter. An Ashland weekly paper has quite an articlo on the interesting and timely topic of "What Not to Feed a Lion." As this breed of animals is quite numerous in tho region about High Germany, Oakblnd and German town, and Christmas is near, it is quite ap propriate to know that stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce is not acceptable to a lion's htomach, and tho farmers of tho neighbor hood will profit by tho Instruction. Wmi.ualotof theorists in tho United States are preaching the great benefits England has derived from frco trade, and that her com mercial supremacy is due to that great idea, u largo and constantly growing number of Unglisbmen nro advocating protection for certain of their industries which are being ruined by cheap products from America. At a conference held in London last week Sir Jamos Lowther, M. P., In speaking upon tho subject, referred to tho healthy condition of iigriculture in Franco as being duo entirely to a protective tariff. And strangely, too, it is frco raw material they want protected. A VERY WEAK DEFENSE. At least ono county seat paper, the Evening Chronicle, has at last picked up sulliciant courage to offer a defonse for tho awards mado by PottBvillo arbitrators, and that a very weak one, indeed. Wo say Pottsvillc arbitrators advisedly no ono outsido of tho county scat having been known, within the inomory of tho "oldest resident;" to have been appointed on a board of arbitration. Hut this fact has not entirely discouraged the taxpayers of tho other towns of the county. They confidently expect to witness the appointment of some one outside of the boundaries of Pottsvlllo as arbitrator, when certain residents of that town have shullled off this mortal coil. It is true there is little ground for bopo undor these circuni MancuH, but with the "favorite" having served tho county so long and faithfully, and tcnuro of life with tbcm ncaring an end, the residents of other towns aro pardonable in indulging in tho bopo oft deferred. To say that the awards are given because of a weak defense is misleading and stilting that which is not true, and nono know it better than our contemporary. In every instance where an appeal has been taken to court the ruling of tho (Pottfcville) arbitra tors has been reversed. Hut will our con temporary kindly inform us of ono intHiico where an award was mado in favor of the defendant. This is tho milk In the coiwanut, which nwxln confridontble light shed upon it, and which our contemporary very wisely avoids. It appears to bo an ontahlished rule to xlvo the award in favor of the prosecutor, so the cast! will be thrown into court and tho defendant mulcted for a large bill of costs. Nine per cent, of the awards made are agalnt the defendant, whether tho latter be a borough, corporation or individual. l!ut what hag our contemporary to say In defense of the discrimination against other towns in favor of the county seat? Why 1b it that tho mine names appear so often as arbitrators, and why is It that they invari ably reside In Pottsvlllo and spend their leUure hours within the four walls of the eourt house 1 .Why Ib it that taxpayer from other parts of the county aro not selected for this purpo? There must be some good reason for this npparout, discrimination, and tho ople outfide of the county seat aro anxiously awaiting enlightenment on the sub ject, l'erhap our contemporary can furnish thp knowledge. We patiently await a reply. PITHY POINTS. Happenings Tlirnuglimit the llcfrlon Chron icled for Hasty Perusal. To-dsy was motion court at Pottsvlllo. The anthracite coal trade, says. tho Ulack Diamond, is certainly on a firmer bavU than for a long while, and we would draw atten tion to the fact that all rail shipment to tho west are behind those of last year and also that there is not that tendency to obligate the companies down to hard and fast prices for future delivery, as was the case last year and which tended to a great extent to fix the prices and demoralize the market ibr lbOj. It is also reported that tho mines are running at less time and any movement resultant in overproduction will lie sedulously avoided. Here, too, Is another feature of tho trade, aud that is that the country olemeut will bo taking more fuel this year than last, or in 1801, in cousequonce of the fact that thoy aro in n position through good harvests to lay iu a supply of fuel, whore last your they wore burning wood or scrub or anything' that was igneous." l'or the Jiports.
