Columbus, O., Dec. 13. Tho long nnd
useful enrcor of Jttdge Allen G. Thurmuit
camo to n closo yesterday afternoon tvtltlB
o'clock nt his rosldcnco, cornor of Uloh
street mid Washington iivcnuu. Tho cud
was peaceful In tho oxtromc, nnd tho sotll
lit tho great niiin left tho earthly habita
tion without n sign of physical distress.
At tho Instant of dissolution, nnd for sonic
hours before, Judge Thnrninn had boon
lying lu tin unconscious condition. Ho
passed moroly from sleep temporal to sleep
ctcrnnl, and tho chango was hardly notloe
nblo oven to the loved ones who surrounded
his bedsldo.
In the midst of the volumes of knowl
edge he prized so dearly, and amid tho
scenes whuro ho has spent so many pleas
ant hours of his happy old ago, tho vital
6park took wings from tho image of clay.
Judge Thuruum died in his library.
Shortly after his fall sovcral wcoks ngo
Judge Tliurmun's bed was moved from
THIS LATE ALLEN 0. THURMAN.
tho adjoining bedroom to his library, and
ho remained thoro. Judge Thurmnn has
lived with his son, Allen AV. Thurmnn,
slnco tho death of his wlfo, and being un
able to leavo tho houso he occupied apart
ments in tho second story of the residence,
whero ho spont tho last days of his llfo in
a remarkably pleasant and agreeable man
ner. The beginning of Judgo Thurman's
fatal illness dates from Nov. 1 last, when
ho fell heavily whllo walking across tho
library floor. A few days after tho fall
Judgo Thurman's llfo was despaired of,
but he rallied nnd nt times apparently
scorned to havo regained his old tlmo vigor.
On Nov. 1!) Judgo Thurmnn was 8'J years
old, and on that dato several of his old
friends called on him and had a pleasant
chat. On the occasion ho seemed unusu
ally choorful and bright.
Since tho accident ho had his good days
nnd lfls, bad ones. Ho had been confined
to lils'bed nearly all tho tlmo, nnd his phy
sician, Dr. W. H. Whltakor, culled on him
dally. That ho was steadily growing
weaker was apparent to all, and It hud
been known for some tlmo that his lease
on llfo po'ulil not he protracted much lon
ger. On account of his confinement to
bed Judgo Thurmnn began to bo nllllctod
with bed sores, nnd In order to relieve this
unpleasantness ho nt times sat up and
stood up, but ho had not attempted to
walk slnco his fall.
Last Tuesday when Dr. Whitaker culled
ho found his patient sitting up in n chair
smoking a el'jar, and apparently enjoying
it. Ho shook hands with tho doctor and
said: "My dear doctor, sit down and talk
to me." Ho seemed, very buoyant and
cracked n joke, and, as was his habit,
talked to tho doctor lu French. It should
bo remarked that recently It seomed to bu
ono of Judgo Thurman's delltrhts to talk
French, ''showing tho remarkable vigor of
hH mental powors. Last Tuesday Dr.
Whitaker noticed that he did not continue
his Fronch conversation ns long as usual,
and soon tired of his cigar, and whon Iiq
got back Into bed his pulso was rather
fceblo.
"Whon Dr. Whltakor saw Judgo Thur
mnn at 4 o'clock on Wednesday ho seemed
listless nnd rather hrevvy about his eyes
und lu his mental operations. Howpver,
ho recognized tho physlclnnsnnd members
of the family. Tho change for tho worse
becamo quite mnrked shortly aftor mid
night Wednesday, and at 2 a. m. tho fam
ily becamo alarmed and sontforDr. Whit
aker. At that tlmo tho physician found his
venerable patient almost unconscious.
Mucus had filled tho bronchial tubes and
his breathing was labored. Dr. Whltakor
aroused him sulllelontly to ask him If ho
was thirsty, and Judge Thurmnn nodded
his head in itssout. Ho soonied to bo par
tially conscious of what ho was doing. Ho
then sank Into a heavy stnpor from which
ho was never aroused. It was known at 2
a. in. that tho baglnulug of the end had
set In and tho family were so notified. At
lOo'clook Dr. Wultukor found tho patient
gradually sinking. Judgo Thurmnn was
perfectly unconscious, and romalned so
until ho passed away at 1:15 p. m.
At tho final sceuu all of the immediate
family were at his bedside, llo scorned to '
bo freo from all distress. Those present I
nt the death sounu. wero Mr. and Mrs. Al-1
Ion W.Tliiirunui and the following grand-!
children: Lee. Miss Katharine, Allen G.,
Jr., Daniel C. and Sterling Thurnuin, all
children of Mr. Allen W. Thurmnn.

HosTON, Dec. 13. The Standard pub

exists between Mrs. Helen M. Gougar, the

already secured tho services of counsel,
nnd says she "will certainly permit no

Tho dillleulty began In the United States

Was a witness In tho suit brought against
Congresmnu Elljnh Morse by Mrs. Gougar.
Mrs. Llvermoro testified that she knew
Mrs. Gougar well and that sho occasion

Mrs. Llvermoro also said sho had nover
been a member of the Prohibition party
of this state.
A letter appeared In tho last Issue of tho
New York Voice, signed by Mrs. Gottgnr,
in which sho sharply took Mrs. Llvermoro
to task and sought to show that she did
not speak tho truth at tho trial. Mrs.
Gougar nlleges that Mrs. Llvermnrc sup
ported tio Prohibition nominees, and
quoted from Hon. J. I'. St. John for tho
purpose of showing that sho left tho Re
publican party and joined tho Prohibi

statements which Mrs. Llvermoro made at
tho trial.
Mrs. Llvcrinoro Is very Indignant at the
letter In The Voice, which sho pronounces
"n tissue of misrepresentations." Mrs. ,
Llvermoro has handed the entire matter I
over to counsel. 1
