Buffalo, Deo. 3. Tho Now York Cen

nblllty to run upon its rontl tho fastest
regular truln in tho world, nlthough it
failed lu tills particular run to ilnlsh upon
tho schcdulo tlmo laid out for It, This
failure was duo entirely to accident, othor
portions of tho run showing conclusively
that tho fast scheduled tlmo can ho ac
complished and ovon excelled.
Tho record so far is as follows, taking
tho record ot yesterday up tp tho tlmo of
tho accident: Actual running time per
hour of now Kinpiro stato oxpress, G3.5G
miles; old Empire stato oxpross, 61 miles;
ngllsli road, 01.75 miles; gain of I'.mplro
Btato train over host record, 1.81 miles per
hour.
Up to six months ago tho train known
its tho Kmplro stato oxpress had tho
world's record as u regular train for fast
running, Tho London railway, of Eng
land, running from London to Aberdeen,
began to run a trlflo fnstor than tho Km
plro Btato's record of 51 miles an hour.
Yesterday tho Control bogan a now soiled-
ulo for this train which necessitates n run
of about two miles an hour fustcr thnn
tho English rival.
Leaving Now York at 8:30 a. m., and
with every condition against her, the
train made more than three-quarters of
tho distance in even faster tlmo than tho
new schedule calls for, which is 63 miles
an hour. Tho regular oxpress had added
to it a special car of Vlco President Webb,
weighing 100,100 pounds. In addition to
this extra weight a drizzling rain was fall
ing, making the tracks extremely slippery.
Tho run from New York to Albany, 143.88
miles, was made in 2 hours nnd 80 minutes,
tho train reaching that city i minutes
ahead of tho now schcdulo tlmo and 9 min
utes ahead of the old schcdulo.
Engine 999 pulled tho train through to
Syracuse, 2 minutes ahead of tho now
schedule and IS minutes faster than tho
old, making a total gain of SI minutes be
tween Now York and Syracuse. Between
Syracuse and Rochester tho drizzling rain
turned to snow, and the wind changed to
a head wind of great resistance. Despite
these conditions, tho train rolled Into Ro
chester exactly on tlmo.
From Rochester as far as Churchville,
GO miles east of Buffalo, the stations were
passed oxactly upon schedule tlmo. Just
aftor passing Churchville, where tho on-
glue takes water without stopping, the
scoop caught on an obstruction in tho
trough and, dropping down, baugod
against the tics for at least a mile until
tho train could be brought to a standstill.
When the train was again started, aftor a
loss of 17 minutes, it was closo upon tho
long hoavy grade running up to Batavla,
and it lost 8 minutes more on this up
grado. When the Batavia station was
passed the train was "5 mlnutos behind
tho new schedule.
Tho run into Buffalo from Batavla, a
dlstancq of 40 mllos, ws mado In about
SI minutes, and tho train rolled into
Buffalo S3 minutes behind tho now
schcdulo tlmo and 3 minutes ahead of the
old schedule. Tho entire run of 410 miles,
including thrco stops and exclusive of a
delay of 20 minutes, was made in 404 min
utes.
