Iiiterferenec.
Philadelphia, Nov. 29. Tho Univer
sity of Poiinsylvnnlii football olovon yos
tcnlnyiiftomoon defeated tho Cornell tenm
by a scoro of !(! to 3, thus wludltif up tho
football season with n olean record of vic
tories to her credit.
Two touchdowns nud it goal from tho
field In tho first half, nnd four touchdowns
nnd n goal from tho Held In tho second
half vnw the record of the red nud blue,
while tho Ithnca boys wero nblo to nrnko
but two points during the ontlro game,
nnd this was duo to Brooke's luexcusnblo
fumble.
Devoid of roughness, roplcto with bril
liancy. It was just such n game as tho foot
ball enthusiast thoroughly enjoys, btra
tculo play, sclcntlflo punts and brilliant
all 'round Interference wero tho features
of Pennsylvania's gnmo. Cornell's defeat
can bo summed up lu very row words
weak dofouse nnd still weaker Interference.
That tho team, with tho exception of Cap
tain Wyckoff, wero lu tho pink of condl
tlou there can bo no doubt, but thoy wore
simply outclassed. Their fullback, Ultchlo,
was lamentably weak, and uu oxchaugo of
kicks between ho nnd Brooko was always
good for from ten to twenty yards gala for
the Pennsylvania tcom.
Thoro was considerable fumbling, which
can bo partly accounted for by the slip
pery condition of tho ball. Woodruff's
fumble, when ho had carried tho ball over
tho Cornoll goal lluo, cost Pennsylvania
tho loss of a touchdown, oud Brooko's
fumble of Williams' pass gavo tho Ithaca
boys tholr only points.
At no tlmo during tho entire game was
Pennsylvania's goal In danger, tho play
being In Cornell's territory nearly all tho
time.
Cornoll's eleven was weak, but thero
wero Individual players on tho team who
covered themselves with glory. Bcachnm
at left halfback, Fitch at left tackle and
Swcetland at right 'tacklo played bril
liantly, as did also Captain Wyckolf, con
sidering his condition.
During the first half Beacham was used
at every opportunity, nnd ho generally
managed to gain from two to live yards
beforo being thrown. But tho strain wa3
too much for him, and ho was Intrusted
with the ball but comparatively llttlo in
tho second half.
Cornell's gains wero mado through left
tackle, and an occasional advance through
tho centor, whllo Pennsylvania mado her
gains at almost any point which tho team
would strike.
Every man on tho red and bluo eloven
ployed as though his, life dcrended upon
tho game, and all acquitted themselves
nobly. Brooko mado ono forty-llvo yard
run and also a soventy-llve yard run, but
in tho latter tho ball was brought back and
given to Cornell for holding. Hinds also
mado ono run of forty-flvo ynrds, and Gcl
bert carricM. tho ball forty yards through tho
entire Cornell team beforo being caught
from behind by Taussig. Farrar, nt right
tackle, played his best game of tho season.
Tlmo uud again did ho break through aud
throw tho Cornell men, frequently for a
loss. Woodruff, Minds, Gilbert, Williams
nud Brooko also played brilliantly.
The teams lined up as follows:
Pennsylvania. Positions- Cornell.
Gelbert Left End Lylo
Wagonhorst Left Tnckle Fitch
Woodruir Left Guard Freeborn
Hull - Center Sohoek
Wharton lllght Guard Hogera
Farrar Hight Tackle Sweetland

And It was a great game. According to.
the oxperts it was strength against science.
Boston, of course, possessed the science
and Chicago tho strength, and nt tho cud
of two hours' hard playing, with strength
pitted against sclonco, the result was a tie.
Fully 4,000 enthusiasts, men and women,
went to seo tho game. What tho crowd

Colvmiiia. Nov. 2J. South Carolina's J
constitutional convention will uiljourn j
glno tile next Tuesday. All tho work of ,
tho convention has now been completed
except that of final rovislon of tho changes '
made In tho constitution, which Is In tho
hands of a committee. Tho body hasbcon
In session continuously, with tho excep
tion of a ten days' recess, since Sept 10.
Tho new constitution will bo different i
ill many respects from tho ono It will i
supersede. The most Important chnngo j
wjll be in tho suffrage article. In round j
numbers thfcro aro 140,000 adult male
negrocsjand 100,000 ndult malo whites In
South Carolina. Tho prosentconstltution
of South Carolina was adopted lu 1SG8, and
was framed by a convention composed
mostly of recently liberated slaves and ,
dominated by northerners who came luto j
tho stato at tho closo of tho war. It wns '
patterned after those of Massachusetts
and Ohio.
Tho greatest objection to It was against
tho suflrago article, which bestowed the
franchlso on nil malo citizens of tho ago of .
21 jrcars and upwards not laboring undor
certain disabilities named. Somo of tho
most Intelligent negro mombors of the
convention of 1803 wero opposed to univer
sal suffrage, and wanted nn educational
qualification Imposed, which would havo j
prevented a vast majority of tho members '
of their own raco from voting.
Tho present constitution provides a nnt
unll negro majority of 10,000, which has
been overcome by an Ingenious registra
tion law nnd tho box ballot law, which re
quired each officer to bo voted for In a sep
arate lwx, tho voter being compelled to se
lect the proper box. Tho lending men of
tho statu havonlwaysrccognlzedtliat there
was iv possibility of one or the other or
both of them being overturned in tho fed
eral courts. This possibility induced them
to ndvocnto tho calling of a convention for
tho purpose of framing n constitution per
mitting such qualification of the suffrage
as would insure the maintenance of white
supremacy.
Thore was groat objection to the calling
of tho convention from the illiterate
whites nnd their friends. There are about
15,000 Illiterate whlto adult nudes In this
state. Tho convention could never have
been called had not promise been given
that theso men would be t.i .en care of.
How to cut down tho negro majority nud
preserve tho vote of tho white men, and do
It lu such a way as to run tho gauntlet of
tho federnl courts was tho difficult prob
lem which engaged tho attention of tho
convention, in which there ure only six
negroos.
Senntor Tillman, who led tho light for
tho calling of tho convention, wns made
chairman of the suffrage committee. The
suffrage article of tho now constitution
provides for un alternative educational or
property qualllicatlou for voters. Any man
who can read or writo, or who pays taxes
on $200 worth of property, has tho right to j
voto. Had tho convention stopped there,
tho illlterato whites would havo been dis
franchised. Thoy nro provided for in a
clauso which says that anyone who can
not voto under either u property or edu
cational qualllicatlou shall bo given n voto
for Ufa if ho can understand a section of
the constitution when rend to him by tho
registration officer. Tills understanding
clauso is only to be operatlvo for two years.
All males attaining their majority after
1808 must comply with tho educational or
property qualification In order to voto.
Under tho old constitution thero was u
two mill tax on property und a? 1 poll tax,
for tho benefit of tho public schools of the
stato. The new constitution retains tho SI
