Undeii tho rosouiidinR thumps admin

so-called Solid South emits a distinctly hollow
and dismal sound.
If thero is any Northern state that tho

Tub county institute will convene at

quence tho schools will bo closed during that

benefitted. May their sojourn at tho county
seat be a pleasant one.
Tub ollicial returns of the election aro no
sooner recorded than the local politicians are
beginning to speculate upon the probable
nominees for President and Vice President on
tho Republican ticket. Tho majority aro
favorable to Thomas Reed for tho head
of tho ticket, and Governor-elect Bradley, of
Kentucky, for Vice President. This would
make a strong ticket, and one that has many
elements of strength.
The Pennsylvania editors seem to be very
much in earnest in their crusade for a revi
hion of tho libel laws of tho state, and they
aro goiug about it in a business-like way. If
tho State Editorial Association cannot draw
up a libel law that will meet tho approval of
tho Legislature, it can draw one that will
meet the approval of men uninfluenced by
purely political considerations and one that
undoubtedly ought to pass.
Sir. William Dabb, of Malta township, aged
eighty-three, passed pcaeef ully away on Tuesdny
last, from single blessedness to matrimonial
bliss, after a hhort but sudden attack of Alice
Blossom, a blooming widow of thlrty-llvc.
Tho above notice appeared in the obituary
column of a Williamsport paper, and it is a
question in our mind whether it was inten
tional or by accident. Perhaps the plan was
adopted to express deep sorrow, or it may bo
that tho "blooming widow of thirty-five"
was tlio author of so charming a, wedding
death notice. We think so.
A decision recently rendered in this state
says tho jurisdiction and authority of the
teacher over the pupil Is neither limited by
the school house walls or tho time tho school
is actually In session. Asa general rule in
all matters connected with tho schools and
manners and morals of the scholars tho
teacher's jurisdiction, conjointly with the
parent's, commences when tho pupils leave tlio
parental roof, and continues until their re
turn from school. Tho teacher, however, is
not responsible for tho misconduct of pupils
on the way to and from school, though ho has
a right to punish for such misconduct when
brought to his knowledge
HASTINGS AND QUAY.
The City and Stato in speaking of tho re-1
eonnliatioii between the Governorand Junior
Senator says that signs multiply to show that
the rupture lwtween Governor Hastings and
honutur Quay is about to be healed. Tho
failure of tho Senator to acknowledge tho
Governor's courteous invitation to accompany
the gubernatorial party to tho Atlanta Ex
position means uuthing and cannot be con
strued as an intentional slight by the gentle
man from Beaver. This invitation was of a
formal charaeter and not particularly a card
from the Governor as an individual; it was
rather the Invitation of the Comraissiun, atid
whether it was acknowledged or not matters
little in sizing up tlio political feud alleged
to exist in this state,
Hastings and Quay are both anxious to get
together, and it i only a cpioitlon of time
until they bury tho hatchet, if thoy have not
already done no. Peacemakers have been at
work, and while the greatest secrecy is sought
to be maintained as to the progress of peace
negotiation)!, wiuo things have leaked out
which indicate clearly the trend of events in
the factional squabble.
It is probable tliat the Governor does not
.re to baL his lieutenants in the recent eon-
test know too much of tlio peacemaking
overtures. They arc not In It,, and that may
explain tho mysterious charactor of tho
movements to hrhiK Hastings and Quay
togcthor.

AGAINST T1IR DISEASE.
Croup is'a terror to young mothers and to
post them concerning tho cause, first symp
toms and treatment is tho object of this item.
Tho origin of croup is a common cold.
Children who aro subject to it tako cold very
easily and croup is almost suro to follow.
The first symptom Is hoarseness ; this is
soon followed by a peculiar rough cough,
which is easily recognized and will never bo
forgotten by one who has heard it. The timo
to act is when tho child first becomes hoarse.
If Chamberlain's Cough Remedy Is freely
given all tendency to croup will soon disap

no danger in giving this remedy for it coil'
tains nothing injurious. For sale by Gruhler
