Mnny Hours In Ailvnnco of tho llnj

New YortK, Oct. 17. Tlio now Amorl
enn Hnor St. Louis speil from tho harbor
yesterday on her race with tho mnlla
across tho ocenu. Slio left her pier In tho
jNortii river four hours tthond. of hor rlvril,
tho Whlto Star lluer MujcsMo, but that
faot will not In tho least stlflo tho ambition
of tho oroft to got tholr postal mattor In
London first.
Thd St. Louis Is bound for Southamp
ton, or S80 miles further than the Mnjon
tle's destination, which Is Quecnstown.
This means from fourteen to fifteen hours
extra steaming for a leviathan ot the St.
llouis' speed, but In lauding the malls at
Southampton tho journey between that
point and Loudon 1 two hours only by
rail. The dl-t iuco between Qti'-eiistowu
aud London by way of Dublin, Kingstown
and Holyhead Is 6ol miles, which Is ac
complished In fifteen hours and forty min
utes, Including tho sea passage of three
hours and forty-three minutes between
Kingstown pier and Holyhead. So It can
bo seen what u closo contest It Is, all things
considered.
What lends additional interest to tho
Journey of tho two ships is tho fact that
through tho medium of tho St. Louis the
Amoncan lino Inaugurates on this trip a
postal contract with tho United States
government that will not tho steamship
company $(511,800 per year, or $0,418,000 for
tlio ten years in which tho agreement will
hold good. Thoso figures aro given on tho
basis of ono trip to Buropo each week by
any of tho four greyhounds tho St. Louis,
St. Paul, Paris or Now York.
Tho postal revenue to tho company Is
exclusive of any that tho British govern
ment may glvo for tho homo passages. Be
cause of this subsidy and tho big sums in
volved, tho postal authorities of both con
tinents will watch tho Inaugural trip with
the greatest interest.
Tlio St. Louis has a mail clerk on board,
n novelty that England has not yet adopted,
This postal clerk, on tho way over, will
sort aud distribute tho mall, so that when
it readies tho Southwestern railway sta
tion at Southampton it will all bo practi
cally ready for delivery. There being no
postal clerk on tho Majostio tho mall of
that vessel will bo delivered at Queens-
town in tho samo crudo shape in which it
was put aboard, and tho sorting process
will have to bo done on tho other sldo.

tlio averngo speed was 15.31 knots an hour
lor two hours. Boilers, engines and every
thing nbout tho ship showed to such ad-
vautago on tho rim up that it was not
deemed necessary to speed her on tho re

By Using This Great Invigorator for Blood
and Nerves,
(From the Syracuse Herald.)
Among those well-known residents of
HyraiUfe, N. Y., who have received almost
untold benefit from the use of Dr. Greene's
Norvtinv blood and ncrvo remedy, can he
counted Austin B. Whipple, of Xo. 131 Lin
den street, an operator of ono of tho typo
setting machines in tho Herald otUce. Mr.
Whipple and Nervura are not new friends,
for tho gentleman can look back for some
years since ho first received relief from ner
vous prostration by Its use after a strong
recommendation from one of his friends who
had been cured of long htandliig nervous
prostration. Mr. Whipple's nervousness
dated from tho time that ho met with loss of
appetite and general debility resulting from
overwork and taxation of his nervous sys
tem. Mr. Whipple says that he began to receive
noticeable benefit after he had taken two
bottles of Dr. Greene's Xcrvuru and a half
dozen bottles proved so ellicaeiotis that he
felt like a new man and was able to prosectito
ids duties oven better than before lie was
overtaken with such agonizing nervous dis
orders. Hi.- r -commendation for Dr. Grcono's
Nervura comes from his heart and not from
any selfish motive. He believes that Ner
vura tiiKen as directed has been tho means of
saving the lives of many people who havo
utKcn it aim recciveu ucucnt turnout irom tno
first bottle taken.
It gives mo nleastiro to recommend Dr.
Greene's Nervura," said Mr. Whipple, when
asked for his opinion concerning it. "I can
cheerfully adviso my friends and all others
who are sullering lrom nervousness to try

beveral members ot her lamily within the
space of a few months, lost control of her
nervous syhteni and became almost helpless.
In fact sue experienced a severe shock of
paralysis all'ecting her entire left side. It
lott her a crinnlo and it was with tho utmost
(iimcuity that sho was atuo to get about the
House.
At the solicitation of somo of her friends
sho tried a half dozen bottles of Dr. Greene's
Nervura and sho says that the effect was
wonderful. She began to Improve after
taking three bottles and in a short time was
ablo to get about with more freedom and
comfort than sho had dreamed of after ex
periencing tho shock of paralysis. Tlio
remedy not only gave her great relief from
the malady that had deprived her of all
comfort, but her physical condition generally
began to improve. Her blood which had
been low and circulated sluggishly, began to
take on new vigor, and sho fairly began lifo
over again, she says.
When seen at her homo and asked what
sho thought of Dr. Greene's Nervura, Mrs,
Sherwood said that she believed that it had
saved her life. "I believe that it is one of
tho greatest remedies for the blood and ner
vous disorders that will ever bo known."
sho said. "There would bo less call for
physicians if tho peoplo would try tho effects
of taking a half dozen bottles. 1 believe
that it is a great tonic and invigorator for tho
blood, To my mind nothing better can bo
taken when ono feels tho effects of a nervous
strain or want an invigorator at any tnno."
It is not a patent medicine, but tho pro
scription of tlio most successful living spec
ialist in curing nervous and chronic dis
eases, Dr. Greene, of 35 West 14th St., New
York City. Ho has tho largest practice in
tlio world, and this grand medical discovery
is tho result of his vast experience. The
great reputation of Dr. Greene is a guarantee
