fession. San Ifiufccisco, Oct. 14. Now thnt
Durrant has told lila story on the wltuoss
Btnml anil has mado answers to all tho ac
cusations Implied by tho oross questions of
tho prosecution an Impression exists
among those who liavo watoUcil tho trial
closely that thoro Is something to como
which will perhaps have more effect on
the minds of tho jurymou as regards tho
guilt or Innocence, of tho defendant than
anything that has gone before. This fool
ing Is duo to the confidence with which
District Attorney Barnes put a series of
startling questions relating to iv convoca
tion held by Durrant with a nuwspaperro
portor, Miss Carrlo Ounnlngham, at the
county Jail within tho past week, and also
touching on tho address and indorsement
of a cortnln envelope which may or may
not have contained a confession.
The prosecution wltnessos will seek: to
show by their testimony that Durrnnt
mado admissions which destroys tho whole
fabric of tho defense. Thoso alleged ad
missions are taken by the prosecution as
coming from the ono person on earth who
knows all that occurred beneath the bel
fry of tho Emanuel Baptist church on tho
afternoon of April 8. The record of what
passed at tho county jail between Miss
Cunningham and Durrant is thus told by
the prosecution, which Is In possession of
tho full facts:
On tho evening of Sept. 22 Miss Cunning
ham visited Durrant nt tho county jail,
nnd during the courso of their convorsa- i
which bore tho following address aniblu
doriement: "Messrs. Dickinson .&' Duo
prey. To bo opened In case.I Mh convicted.
To bo returned to lho lh case I urn ac
quitted." Durrant told the young lady
that tho envelope contained a complete
sthtoment of all that had occurred at tho
Elnanuel Baptist church on the afternoon
of April 8. Ho said that it had boon written
In Order that his attorneys mlcht know
lio 'facts lh tho event of his being 6bn-
vtctett oi tne rauruer or Ulancne Lamont.
On tho following evening, Sept. S3, Miss
Cunningham again visited Durrant at the
county jail, and was there shown a largo
envelope addressed llko the other and
Bmallorono. Durrant t61d her that tho
contents of tho other 'envelope had become
jammed up, and. that he had transferred
tho JVTltt'n statement to the larger en
velope. On tho morning of Oct. 6 Miss Cunning
ham held a conversation with Durrant at
tho county jail, and during tho courso of
that1 conversation, and in answer to ques
tions nskpd him by tho young lady, ho
said that about 5 o'clock on tho afternoon
of April 3 ho ascended tho space between
tho ceiling and tho roof of tho Emanuel
Baptist church fbr tho "purpose of -fixing
ono of tho sun burners. While at work ho
heard a noise which at once attracted his
attention. It seomed to como from that
port of the building where tho belfry is
situated. He walked along In the direc
tion from which tho sound camo and
peered through the opening that connects
tho space abovo tho celling with tho In
terior of tho belfry tower. "Whilo in this
position ho saw the body of Blancho La
mont lying on the second lnnding of the
belfry stairs. Ho repeated tho details of
tho circumstances, and added that Blancho
Lamont was murdered on tho second
landing of the belfry stairs. Miss Cun
ham then said:
"Oh, yes, It was from the second land
ing of tho stairs that the blood dripped
down and stained tho cloth covered pleturo
framo on the lloor below." Durrant re
plied that there was no blood on the cover
of the picture framo, us "we have had tho
stains analyzed and And they wore madu
by water, not blood."
. An 'official inspection was made of the
cloth covered' picture frame referred to as
being stained by blood. This inspection
rovoaled tho fact that thopieco of tho cloth
coyer, one inch by two inches in size, had
been cut from tho framo In tho center of
ono of tho largest blotches or Stains. As
this was not Uono by any ofje connected
with therosecMiotfthe Inference is drawn
that it wnk'flone fcy'feonio'o'no fn'fcrestodfln

in today's lswe:
A great deal lias recently appeared re
specting the iittltudo of President Harri

entored a protest against them to thou
who had the measure In chorsre.
One proi.iluent Republican newspaper
hail stated n -ntly that the McKlulcy tar

thlrt fact is the cause of "Harrison's feel

nounced th.-'t during tho consideration of
the McKinley bill President Harrison
summoned its author und Speaker Heed,
and possibly othur parly leadors, and
waru'.'d them ngnhist tho adoption of such
high figures.
Tho Commercial Gazette is in a position
to say thnt nil such statements nrcf.'ntruo
and misleading. Ex-Presidont Harrison
deserves uelthur censure nor pralson ac
count of the MoKinley tarif ' ' o took
no part in-ilrdttlng or tho t,ma,u ,vion of

Kopoatedly President Harrison, when
asked by thoso drafting the bill, what he
thought of It, stated that the details should
be left to tlk.io In charge of tho measure;
that they were responsible to tho people,
and were most familiar with tho subjects
In hand. Ho offered no advice.
Wnen tlie bill went to tho White House
for signaturo tho president did not. so far
as is known, show any dlsplc.nuro or offer
criticism. Nor did ho subsequently express
dlspleasuro with the law. If tho litw 'was
over held responsible for the defeat of 1892,
President Harrison should stand blame
less.
