THE CUP WILL REMAIN HERE ! Tho Britisher Crossed tlia Line, However, as a Matter of Formality, But Immedi ately Withdrew May Race Off New port or Marblehead, New Yokk, Sept. 13. -Tho International scries between Defender and Vnlkyrlo for tho America's cup is ended. On tho wholo It has been mi extraordinary scries, and whllo tho result Is satisfactory to tho American people, two, at least, of tho contests that wont to nuiko up tho match were not. Defender won iu a clean race on Satur day, on Tuesday last she crossed tho lino behind tho Kngllsh boat, but was awarded tho race on a foul, and yesterday she bad a walkover. Yesterday's occurrence wns all the moro unfortunate, not only becauso a great crowd had gathered to witness tho struggle, but becauso tho weather condi tions wero such as to lead many to sup poso that of all days Valkyrlo would bo In her elemont. Lord Dunravou had said Wednesday night, nnd ho said it most emphatically, that ho would withdraw his boat on the morrow if an absolutely clear conrso was not provided. Ho claimed that during tho previous raco his boat had been greatly in terfered with, nnd as everything depended upon tho outcome of tho third of tho series ho adhered to that decision so closely that Valkyrlo merely crossed tho starting lino and then retired from tho contest. Do fender was well in advance when tho hand icap gun was flred, continued on her jour ney, and went over tho courso well within tho time limit. By her tbrco straight victories, Defender retains tho historic cup for America. Tho raco scheduled for yesterday prom ised to bo a moro oxciting ono than cither of tho two preceding, for It was to bo ex pected that every effort would bo made by Dunravcn, after Tuesday's disappoint ment, to score n victory with tho boat bo had brought so far. Wednesday Valkyrlo bad been timed up to tho highest pitch in anticipation ot yesterday's contest. Soveral alterations had been made, and thoso upon whom her sailing qualities depond most largely wero prepared to expend oyory ounco of muscle and skill toliringherover tho lino a victor Lord Dunraven had expressed himself as apparently satislled with tho decision rendered by tho cup committeo on the fouling of Defender by his boat, and the matter bad seemingly been settled so amicably that it was n question iu tho minds of tho general public If Tuesday's raco would not bo resulted. The preparatory gun was not flred until about twenty minutes after tho fixed time. In tho mean whllo a gun wasilred from the committeo boat and u sigual font up de noting that a delay would tako place. Then tho announcement was mado from tho patrol boat that Lord Dunraven had refused to ra- unless a clear courso was guaranteed by tho committeo. So far as tho committee was concerned It scorned impossible to do moro toseouro open water than it had already dono, for when tho preparatory gnu was flred, tho nearest boat to the racers was fully half a mile away, and tho great majority of tho ex cursion steamors and other craft were much further off in tho distance Tho starting guu went at tho appointed tlmo, and almost at tho samo Instant De fender crossed tho line, Valkyrio's com mandor had so maneuvered her that she was still a long way off, and just a mo ment before tho handicap gun was fired eho, too, crossed tho lino. It was evident to thoso who had been watching tho Kn gllsh boat that sho had no intention of racing, and so it proved, for no soouor wns tho ljno croiscd than sho hauled to ou tho starboard task, Instead of following her rival out, and passed under tho steru of tho lightship. A scoro or moro of steamers started at onco for Valkyrlo, whllo half a hundred steamed In tho direction Defender had takeu. Tho American boat was making good headway with her spinnaker sot, and after starting at 11:20:31 rounded tho first markat l:o:58, and finished at -1:01:80. In tho light breeze this was a particularly good porformanco, and tho beat to wind ward was much faster than had boon an ticipated, for during ono part of that jour ney tho very light brcezo scorned to dlo out almost entirely. But ovou in that De fender mado good headway, and whon sho crossed tho homo lino, tho winner of tho raco, tho winner of tho series, Defondcr, in fact as well as namo, sho was greeted with a roar of whistles, thrlco repeatod, and tho belching of cannon and tho ohcors of thousands for tho gallant victories sho hud won. It Is understood that valuablo trophlos muy bo ottered for contest between tho yachts Dofendor and Valkyrlo off Newport or Marblehead. Tho Atlantic Yacht club contemplates nn attempt to arrange a raco, or a sorlos, between Valkyrlo and Defendor for a spe cial cup to cost about $2,000. Dunravon will bo allowed to arrange dotails, If tho plan materializes, to chooso tho wators be tween Sandy Hook and JIarblehead, and tho rtato within tho limit of Oct. 1; to ar rango that tho public be kept In ignorancu of tho dates, and to select rules of cithor tho Now York, Atlantic or Larchmont clubs, tho threo leading clubs of tho coun try, to govuru tho raco. LOUD UDNliAVKN'S OIJJ12CTIONS. The UxceulTe Crowding of ISxourtlou Steamers Causes Illm to Quit. London, Sept. 13. Houter's News Agency sent a roquost by cable to tho Earl of Dunravon for a statement of tho voa Bons for his action In withdrawing from tho third raco for tho America's cup. Tin following reply 1ms boun received from Now York: "Owing to tho oscesslvo crowding by steamors at tho first two races, especially at tho sturt off and tho last ton miles ol tho second raco, I uottllod tho cup commit too dn tho 10th Inst., requesting that the lottor bo not opened until after a decision had been rendered with regard to tho foul at tho start of tho second raco, that owing to tho danger of a serious accident by col lision with tho excursion steamers, and owing to tho absoluto absurdity of carry ing on races under such conditions, 1 should dccllno to start unless sumo an raugemeut wero mado to raco In clear water. "I roquosted a postponement ot yester day's race, witli a view of arriving at such an arrangement. The committeo found 11 impossible to concede tills. I then notified them that I should bo at Sandy Hook light ship yesterday for tho purpose of giving Defouder a start." Disturbance in a Family Leads to Sensational Reports. A REYOLYER HARMLESSLY USED ! Thomas Eisenhower, an Ex-Stable Boss, Has Some Expensive Fun With His Family and Neighbors and Makes Settlement Before a Justice. Tho report that a shooting all'ray had taken plaee nt the Turkey Run colliery proves to have been a family squabble with out tho shedding of any blood. Tho chief character iu the case is Theodore Eisenhower who, until recently, was stable boss at the colliery and lived iu one of the houses lo cated near the plaee. Another houso in that locality is occupied by a family named Hopkins. Tho houses are close to each other and the families were very neighborly. Of late Eisenhower lias been partaking of the flowing bowl to such an extent that it has scperated him from his funiilymid mado him desperate. Tho jars iu tho family have been very numerous in tho recent past and many law suits resulted. Finally Eisenhower concluded to.Ieavo town und went to Sunbury. He re turned a few days ago and on Wednesday found that his wife, who is reputed to bo a very industrious and deserving woman, was moving her family from the houso at tho colliery to ono in town, in order to leavo the dwelling to be occupied by Eisenhower's brother, Wash., who recently came from Reading and succeeded to tho position of stable boss at Turkey Run collier'. Tlio prodigal didn't like the turn affairs had taken and fought witli his wife and brother. The former took refuge in tho Hopkins' house hold. Eisenhower secured a dress, silk waist and u hut he had bought fur his wife and tore them into fragments. The pieces he carried up on tho hill above the houso und made a bon lire with them. As the last fragment was consumed ho returned to the house und then went to the Hopkins house hold and demanded that his wife be led fur ward for slaughter. Of course, the command was iu no wise complied with and then Eisen hower tried to tako satisfaction out of the Hopkins family. Ho was charged witli recklessly displaying a revolver at one stage of the game and threatening to send his wife and all who befriended her to a place where bloomers are not known. Yesterday Eisen hower was arranged before Justice Shoe maker. He agreed to pay all costs on condi tion that she would withdraw her charges against him and a separation was mutually arranged utter tho wife was paid fur the de stroyed wardrobe. William Setley, tho base ball player who spends most of his winters in Shenandoah and Giiardville, and during the base ball season makes himself famous by jumping from one pait of tho country to another, re gardless of the legal ellect of contracts, ar rived at Sliamokin the other day and within twenty-four hours broke up the Sliamokin Association l!a-.e Rail Club, or, rather, it was on account of hisurrival that the club was disbanded. The cluli signed Setley as soon as lie struck tho town and some of the players objected to playing witli him for various reasons. Setley asked each ono if ho had ever "dono them dirt" and they acknowledged that lie had not. On Tuesday morning somo of the players said that they would not play with Setley. Just before the parade in the after noon Willie and ono of the players exchanged bitter words which would have led to blows if one of the manager had not stepped be tween them and remarked that they were paid for ball playing and not "scrapping." Setley and Heckman headed the band and the rest of tho players followed. Later on at Maysville Heckman refused to play alleging that tho malcontents were "dead against" him and Setley. Heckman went into tho grand stand and as there were only eight men re maining 'without Setley tho malcontents finally concluded to allow Setley to play and during the game he knocked a home run and put up a fielding game par excellence. Tuesday night the managers of the club went to bat und knocked out a pronuncia mento to the effect that inasmuch as the spirit of insubordination laid entered the club, making it necessary to "fire" about four of the members, and as the season was too Into to hire a lot of new men, it was timo to disband. When tho players heard this they felt sick, as about three weeks' play had been nipped in tho bud. Setley, Heck man and a few otliors are now playing a few games on tho co-operative plan.
