New YouiC, Sept. 4. Tho following
BtntiJinDiit luw just been received by n
gentlemtin In this city from rosponsible
portfons lu Tnrkoy, fully cogulznut of tin
facte:
Soino Dlglit months ngo a movement wi
miulo on tho part of tho Turks to send nld
to tho victims of their barbarity at Hasaoiin
A gift of 8,000 was reported, ntid a coin
(nltteo was organized to see to Its dlstrlbu
Hon. Small sums wore ottered to tho peo
ple on. condition that they would sign re
ceipts in tho nature of thanks for the gen
croslty thus manifested, tit the Stunu thin
certifying, that it was not tho soldiors ol
tho sultan who Injured them, but only u
littlo row that hnd occurred between them
mid the Kurds.
Naturally they declined the proffered aid
dii such conditions. Hero was tho gov
ernment that with Are and sword, and
with almost unprecedented and fiendish
atrocity, had utterly wasted their homes,
coming nnd offering u paltry dollar a head
to tho survivors who tiro on tho ground as
proof of their gracious sovereign's char
ltablo regard for them, whllo they could
go' among their Moslem neighbors and
Identify property worth many times this
sum as that which had been wrested from
them, whllo it would bo easy for tho gov
ernment itself to collect and return from
among tho moro distant Kurdish nomads
nearly tho whole amount they had lost.
In tho meantime, tho English men and
women had collected for their fellow
Christians somo efficient aid. AVhen tho
government learned of this, and that
agents wero coming to distribute this
money, officials began to say: "If these
people will not accept our aid, why should
wo allow others to como In and help them."
Inlluential friends of tho sufferers finally
persuaded tho government to modify their
demands to thoextentof accepting tisimpla
receipt of funds received, and oven then
the people wore with difficulty persuaded
to receive tho proffered aid. However, tho
amount that thoy Jiavo boon called upon
to receipt for up to tho present tlmo has
not been sufficient to prove burdensome.
Of tho 2,000 only 100 has yet material
ized, and nearly 2 per day goes for salar
ies of tho commission.
When agents wero appointed by the
British ambassador to distribute tho funds
from abroad it was with somo difficulty
that permission was secured for them to
enter tho devastated region. Tho services
of tho existing Turkish commission wero
offered to dlstributo thoso contributions,
but finally this point was apparently
waived, and thoy woro allowed to locate
themselves at tho village of faemal.
Tho sight of tho crumbling walls of Its
once comfortable dwellings convinced them
that the first thing to bo done was to pre
pare these buildings for occupation, but
when they woro ready to start tho mem
bers of the Turkish commission reported
to the British agents that they wero in
structed not to allow them to meddlo with
tho buildings, and that all relief rendered
must bo given through their hands.
At tho samo tlmo tho man sent ostensi
bly as their guard constantly exercised tho
most annoying espionage, llstenfng to
every word thoy said and reporting to the
government an exaggerated statement of
all that wus done. Under theso circum
stances, tho British representatives made
vigorous protests to tho government, and
tho questions lit Issue wero referred to tho
central authorities. As a temporary meas
uro, so that the poor people might not re
main entirely hungry, It was arranged
that tho agents might, for tho present, dls
trlbutofood,oulyltniustbo In the presence
and under tho inspection of a representa
tive of tho government.
Considerable money had also been con
tributed by tho Armenians, from various
cities, with tho expectation that tho local
Armenian authorities, lu concert with tho
British agents, would 6eo to Its distribu
tion. Tho government, lwwover, has sent
them strict orders that if they chooso to
hand over their funds to tho Turkish com
mission for distribution they can do so;
otherwlso, they aro peremptorily estopped
from distribution. Of course, thoy do not
hand over their funds, and so tho money
must watt until a better condition of nf
fairs can bo Inaugurated.
Tho general condition of the country1 is
getting worso. Tho Christians aro having
a hard time In harvest. They are In dan
ger df their lives. It Is usual for them to
remain In. tho fields during harvest, but
now thoy duro not. Tho women usually
carry food to tho Holds for tho workers,
but now thoy nro afraid to do so. The
other day about two mllos from hero a girl
carrying food to tho fields for tho work-
mon was set upon by three young Turks
nnd foully and brutally treated. A row
followed, and two or throe Christians wera
wounded.
At another vlllago, nlno hours from
hero, a band of thirty horsemen entered
the vlllago of Kupri Keuy and first went
through tho vlllago In a riotous way ami
greatly terrified the people, demanding tho
girls and bridos, Later thoy took their
rifles and went firing through the street
of tho village. The son of tho priest opened
the door, with the Idea of liuluowg uiem
to leavo by giving money. Ho was shot
down llko a dog. They kept up this for
about thivo hours. Tliwy broke oik'U some
doorw and flred Into thu houses. Tho gov
'eminent has not yet taken any steps lu
the matter, though this baud Is well
known.

In Mexico Without the Virgin. Iinngc.
CITY of Mkxico, Sept. 4. There Is somo
fear lest the recent circular of tho Protest
nnt missionaries attacking the popular be
lief In the Virgin (iaudaloupo may arouse
the Inherent fanaticism of the Indians,
who will flock into the city in great mini
berg In October, during the coronation
festivities, the number estimated beltm
from 75,(XK),(hki to HX),ixx),0(X). Somo Am
crlcnns rcgiet the action taken by tho mis
sionaries who, however, defend their posi
tion as lieitig already fully supported by
omlnent Catholic prelatesof foniiorrontui--les,
who protested against the adoration ol
the Virgin of Gumlnluiipc, denouncing It
ns a gross Imposition.
The belief in this apparition of tho virgin
is shared by many thousands otupperclHW
I people, and there Is certain to bo deep feol-
' ing nrbused when tho missionaries bogln
to circulate their projected dally paper, do
, voted to eradicating what thoy term a pop
I nlur superstition. Itiullcal liberal papers'
1 applaud warmly the proposed action of the
I missionaries, and aro Inciting them In
I their course of disseminating llterntuie

I lief.
I The Virgin ot Guailaloupo is cherished
i here ttB much as Our Lady of Lourdes in
I France. Miracles without number arc
I ascribed to her intervention and there aro
few Catholic households in tho country
I without her imago. Evidently a tremen
