An Unsatisfactory Oontost Be
tween the Two Yachts,
VIGILANT AWARDED THE RACE,
Ilut the Defender Met with nn Accident
Which Compelled Her to Withdraw at
the Kml of the First Round, When She
Was Fiva Minutes Ahead.
NEW YoitK, Aug. 21. The first formal
(rial race between tho Dofondor niul tho
Vigilant to give tho America's cup com
mlttoo nn opportunity to docldo which
boat should bo named to dofond the cup
was hold yestordny outsldoof Sandy Hook j
in tho same waters that tlio cup raco win
tako placo lu, but ended vory unsatis
factorily. Tho boats raced not only to
give the committee a lino on thom, but
also for a cup that John Jacob Astor of
fered to tho winnor of tho majority of tho
races that tho committee should order.
Tho winner of tho oup, howover, will not
nocosaarlly bo tho dofender of the Ameri
ca's cup. Ouo boat might beat tho other
three times straight, and yet tho Ameri
ca's cup committee will havo absolute
power nnd discretion In picking tho de
fender. Tho committee might decide from
tholr observations during the cruise of tho
Now York Yacht club to tho eastward,
and lgnoro thoso trial rncos nltogothcr If
they so chooso to do.
It is believe 1 among ynchtmou that the
commlttco ordored these trial races moro
in the hopo that they would see Dofondor
In a good Btlff breeze, If not a hard wind,
a condition of things in which she has
not yet had tho opportunity of displaying
her power. They camo vory near hnvlng
the desired view yestorday, but thoy wore
forestalled by nn accident that provonteu
Defender from really showing whnt she
could do in a breeze of wind that went
ovor the wnter probably nt tho rnto of
twonty knots an hour. In fact It was the
vory stiffness of the breeze .that brought
dire injury to the fin keeled boat. The
breeze stirred up her rigging so much
and played such havoo among it that it
loosened it to a material extent up to
ward the masthead and caused such dam
age that Defender had to withdraw or
take a liberal chanco nt carrying away
her topmast.
It was afterwnrd found that the Black
ing up of tho rigging was so extensive
that the yncht would not bo nblo to com
pote In tho second trial race for a week.
The committee haying learned this fact
decided at tho New York Yacht club
houso last night that the uoxt two trial
races would take place on Tuesday and
Wednesday of next week.
Tho v Igilnnt, too, wns prevented from
going over tho whole course, but from u
different cause. After sho had mado her
first round of the ton miles to windward
and return she hauled down her club top
sail, and thou ran up against a wind that
burst her jib into shreds. Nothing daunted,
sho ran up another jtb, nnd was proceed
ing on the course tho second time whoii
the committee boat Luckeiibuc.lv ran up
alongsido of hor whllo sho was tacking, nnd
notified her that sho need go no further.
that the Dofondor had withdrawn, nnd
that Blio, Vigilant, had been decided the
winnor of tho day's raco.
Tho timo of the boats in the incomplete
raco was as follows:

Alarming Progress of Forest Fires
in New Jersey,
GREAT DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY
It Is Estimated That the Various Confla
gration. Will Cause Ilnmnc" Amountlne
to Hundreds of Thousands or Dollars.
The Supposed Work or Incendiaries.
Oavk Mat. Aug. 81. A forest Are cov
ering 200 acres of valuablo timber Is burn
ing betwoen Capo May Court House nnd
Goilien. The residence and barn of George
Uorton wore destroyed by tho fire. A high
wind fanned tho flames all day, and tho
few farmurs who are attomntlntr to chock
j tho progress of the flro hnvo had llttlo
success.
Itoports from othor places In South Jor
soy show that there are many miles ot
flamo sweeping onward. A torrlblo forost
flro has boon raging In Now Jersey slnco
Monday mornlDg between tco and Taun- j
ton. How tho flro broko out Is not known, .
but It started close to Audorsonvllle, and
has burnod out thousands of acros of val
uablo timber, cranborry bogs and tho
Jackson meadows betwoen that placo and
Oak Knoll. Crowds of men from Med
ford and the hamlets In the vicinity of tho
flames have been fighting tho fire for
hours. The reports from tho scene are
meager, owing to Its distance from telo
graphlo stations, but It Is Bald tho West
Jersey cranberry bogs aro burned. Tho
fire Bpread to the extent of thrco miles,
burning everything beforo It houses,
barns and outbuildings and the cranberry
bogs of Henry Thorn, Dr. Richard Brad
dock and Japhet Bowkor.
There Is tho groatcst feeling among the
peoplo In the vicinity of the lire. Huckle
berries grow In abundance on burned
ground, and some of the cabin dwellers,
who make their living by picking berries.
It is said, occasionally set fire to bush
lands regardless of consequences, and it
Is believed this flro Is of Incendiary origin,
and tho citizens have appointed a com
mittee to inquire Into the cause.
Joe Anderson, a charcoal burner, who
had just arrived from tho scone of the fire,
was seen by a reporter at Berlin. He said
tho Are had mysteriously started near his
home at Andersonvlllo, and that tho cab
Ins of several charcoal burners were de
stroyed, and that a number of cranberry
bogs had been burned over, entailing a
loss of many thousands of dollars. The
fire now threatens Oak Knoll, Crow's
Foot and other hamlets, and everybody Is
out fighting flames and trying to stop
their course by back firing.
A big forest fire is raging about fifteen
miles from Cape May. Tho corn crop is
In groat danger, and will be destroyed un
less rain puts out tho flro.
Considerable valuable lumber In the
woods at May's Landing Is being burnod
by a forest flro. A big crowd of men and
boys are fighting the flumes to prevent tho
fire from spreading to May's Landing
proper, whero tho residences nro located.
The f orei t flro In the vicinity of Abso-
com Is still burning. Many of tho men
who wero called out of church on Sunday
to fight tho flames are still doing so, but
tho flames continue to spread.
Tho forest arcs which started near
Tom's lllver on Sunday, and to which
but llttlo attention was paid, aro spread
ing and now threaten serious loss. Mon
day nlghtastrongnorthwcstwind sprang
up and tho flames wero driven towards
tho farms 'iloug the Manchester plko unu
throateuiQr for hours to roach the farm
buildings. The, farmers, aided by volun
teers, fought tlio flro nil night. Thrco
hundred men worked throughout tho
night in relays. Valuable timber was
burned, but tlio efforts ot tho fighters
wero entirely directed toward saving tho
crops and buildings. Yesterday the wind
shifted, am' tho flames were driven to
ward tho Liikewood road, but not toward
tbe village, if the wind holds it will carry
tho flamos Into the extensive cranberry
bogs, which aro dry and will burn.
The fires near Egg Harbor City are still
burning fiercely and have more headway
than at any time beforo, despite the fact
that hundreds aro fighting tho flames. The
flamss are now hcudod directly toward
McRce City, and there aro many houses
lu tho path. A drenching rain is about
all that will savo eight or ton buildings
which are lu the way. Embankments are
being thrown up in places to stay tho
Are.
It Is estimated that tho various forest
fires will do damage amounting to hun
dreds of thousands of dollars.
