Senator Quay again routed tho comhino on
Saturday. Of the eleven delegates in fivo
counties tho Senator received eight. Ho car

One of tho most exciting games of ball ever
played by amateur clubs in Schuylkill county
was played yesterday at Ml. Carmcl by the
local club, and the Lincoln club, of town.
The batting of Wanes and the pitching of
Lynch, of the Lincoln club, formed the
features of the game, the latter having struck
out nine men. Lynch is considered to he the
best amateur pitcher ill the county. The
score by innings was as follows :

tho Shenandoah Water and Gas Company.
Mt. Carmcl had a road bicycle raco Friday
night, which was witnessed by about 2000
people. Tho winner, Charles Goldschmidt,
covered tho distance of about 10 miles in 325
minutes.
Two Polauders visited this town Saturday
to attend the Phoenix picnic, and while in
Pear alley a difficulty arose between them
over some trillc, when ono kicked tho other
and broko a rib.
Tho county fair is now in bloom. That at
Lykcns opens up to-morrow, wliilo the
Orwigsburg managers are busy getting things
in shape for theirs. They will have good
races this year.
John Billhitio and Miss Annie Henton, of
Turbotville, Northumberland county, after a
courtship of twenty years standing, wound it
up witli a wedding at Atlantic City. Hois 71

The Upper Octorara Presbyterian church,
near Parkcburg, Chester county, will cele
brate the l'.ith anniversary of its organiza
tion on Sept. -1th. Its first pastor was Rev.
David Evans, of Wales, and its second Rev.

Tho Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf
and Dumb at Mount Airy, Philadelphia, be
gins its seventy sixth year ol school work on
September 15th. It is a free school, supported
by the state, for tho education of its deaf
children. Applicants for admission must be
six years of age, and not over twenty Oral
methods by which tho deaf aro taught to
speak and to read from the lips aro pursued,
and sepenito intellectual and industrial de
partments with experienced instructors aro
maintained. Fall classes are nuw forming,
and parents and friends of deaf children
should lose no time in making application for
their admission.

Contractors Gallagher & Lamb are pushing
the work of making tho connections to tho
public water works with as llttlo delay as
possible. They completed the connections
on West Lloyd street Saturday night, and in
order to not leave tho n-idents of that
thoroughfare without water over Sunday
worked until 11 o'clock. This morning they
started in on West Line street. Quito a
number of people who have boilers in their
houses capable of standing a pressure of only
150 pounds are experiencing considerable
trouble, from the fact that tho pressure on
tho borough line is too great at present and
causes tho boilers to crack and eventually
become full of holes. It is said that it will
require boilers capable of standing 250 pounds
pressure, and tills fact will necessitate a re
duction of tho pressure on tho lines.
