Upon examining tho warrants tho pres
ident of the bank discovered thoy were in
favor ot parties who nro la tho habit of
holding tholr warrants until paid by the
city, By use of tho tolephono ho learned
that the parties' to whom tho warrants
wero Issued hold warrants 'for tho exact
amounts of those purchased by the bank.
In tho meantlmo Phillips had taken the
cortlllcato of deposit recolvod in payment
for the warrants nhd placed It to his ac
count at the Beatrice National bank, and
upon Its presentation to tho Farmers' and
Morchants' bank payment was refused.
It Is understood Hawkins is Implicated
in tho matter through tho fact that a part
of tho warrants' wore drawn up on tho
water fund, and Olork Phillips claims
thoy were furnished hfin by tho water
commissioner. Tha city council has de-
clarod tho ollices vacant.

named to Death by Acid.
Aurora, Ills., Aug. 17. A Chicago and
Northwestern passenger train ran through
an open switch about a mile north of this
city and collided with somo frolght cars
on a siding. Ten boys were Btandlng on
ono of the freight cars, which was loaded
with sulphurio acid. All tho boys were
more or less burned, Thomas Rush, aged
lB yoars, being burnod to death by acid
and steam, and Charles Chtlvers so seri
ously burned that he will die.

Pomeuot, O., Aug. 17. John B. Lind
say, charged with tho murder of William
Gundlff on Aug. 7, nfter a preliminary
hearing, was sent to jail last night with
out ball. The court room was crowded
with West Virginia miners, friends of the
murdered man, who openly declared they
would lynch Llndsoy If ho wus admitted
to ball. Hundreds followed him to the
Jail door and raised a yell when the door
closed on him.
