Wholesale Murderer's ninny Victims.
The Prisoner ltldlouleg the Charges.
Chicago, July 80. Tho soarch of tlio
Holmes building was proseouted yostor
day on tho information given to tho pollco
by M. C. Chnppull, tho machinist, who
says that bo nrticulntod tho skeletons of
thred of tha supposed Victims of H. H.
Holruos, Cbnppoll told tho pollco thnt
Holmes bad two yats In tho collar. Ono,
ho said, waft In tho southeast corner, and
tho other In tho southwest cornor of tho
renr collar. Thoy bad slnco boon wallod
up, bo said. Ono of tho rats, according to
Choppoll's statoinont, was used as a vclisol
In which tho flush was oaton frpm bonos
by tho uso of acids. Tho other was for tho
purposo of bleaching tho bones.
Twelvo laborers worked all day dinging
out tho two corners designated by Chap
poll, and woro about to give up tho sonroh
as unsuccessful whon ono Of tho mon nt
work on tho southoast corner struck his
spado against somcthlngwhlch gavo forth
a metallic, sound. Tho jnotal object
proved to bo a hugo tank in tho Bbapo of a
boiler. It was located Just outsldo tho
collar wall, and its top was four feet from
tho ground's surface. Work for tho night
was stopped before tho tank wns fullymn
covered, but apparently it is olght foet
long and threo feet In dlamotor.
Tho police yesterday secured a skoloton
which thoy bollevo to bo ouo of tboallogod
victims of Holtnos. Chappoll took tWa
dotoctlvos to tho bouso of a West Side
physician, whoro tho comploto skoloton
was found. Chappoll says that ho got the
bones from Holmes. After examination
tho pollco decided that tho skeleton is
probably that of Miss Clgrand, tho Indi
ana girl. It had boon sold to tho Hahne
mann Medical oollcgo jby Holmes, the po
llco claim. Yostorday's And, with the
trunk discovery of Sunday, makes two of
tho threo skolotons which Chappoll claims
to havo articulated for Holmes, and the
pollco aro In hopes of finding tho third
very shortly.
Bosldo thoso matters tho pollco havo so
cured tho trunk which Holmes said he
had' used In sinking Anna Williams In
the loko. Thoro aro plonty of signs that
It onco hold a body frosbly mutilated, and
Chappoll says Holmes brought the trunk
to his homo with tho remains of Anna Will
lams In It.
"In this way," said Inspoctor Fltzpob
rick, "wo aro told four victims of tho En
glowood houso wcro disposed of. This
witness took away tho skoloton partly
cleaned and asked no questions. Ho got
$30.00 for oach Job. Ouo of tho bodlos was
that of a man. Wo havo not boon ablo to
concludo'Who ho was. Thoro Is ony.asus
plclon that this was Robert E, Phelps,
who was supposod to havo married Miss
Miss Cigraud. Holmes said bo wantod
htm to tako caro of tho bodlos of two chll-
dron. Ono witness Bays ho rofusod to
mount tbo bones' of any children, but he
does not say anything to explain what
distinction ho saw betweou children's
bodlos and any others if his buslnoss was
legltlmato and ho bad no knowledge of
foul play. You sdq,' it la all very sus
picious.'' f
Ono of tho mapy theories that has been
advanced concerning tho Holmes castle,
and the many usbs to which It wns put Is
to tho oflect that Holmes was a profess
ional "procurer." Tho prosonco of so
many young girls about tho promises at
various times haS lod to tbo suspicion that
Holmes added this to his other nefarious
crlmofl, In this way tho dlsappoaranco of
somo of tho unfortunate creatures Is ac
counted for,

purporting to come from the arch con

mado by Charles Cbuppoll, of Chicago, to
tho effect tho.t ho bad articulated four
skolotons for Holmes.
la tho first placp, Holmos declnrod that
any medical man who failod to mako a

could do so In many other ways by calling
Into play his sclontlflo knowledge Accept

thorn scrapod and articulated, but tho
supposition that bo had murdered pcoplo
to obtain them ho sooutod as urrunt non
senso. "I got thorn in a legltlmato man
ner," ho oontlnudd, "and I am prepared
to provo It whon tbo time comes."
Chappoll may bavo dono somo work for
him In this lino, and he bollovod he had,
Holmes wont on, but his prlcbs wcro so
high that bo was obliged to drop .him,
"Chappoll knows nothing of my affairs,"
