Another American Vessol Fired

STATEMENT OF CAPTAIN QUICK.
lie Peolnres That lie for o Ho Could Com
ply with ft Command to Coma To Two
Solid Shots Wore Fired at the Schooner
Carrie A Lane,
BjlKAKWATEtl, Del., July 25. Captain
Quick, of the American schooner Carrie
A. Lane, upon his arrival hero last night
hail n tnlo to toll about ntlirllllng oncoun
tcr In Cuban waters with a Spnnlsh gun
boat. Two shots woro flroil at the Lane
by the man-of-war, and one of the schoon
er's crow narrowly escaped being killed
by ono of them. The vossol wns mndo to
hoavo to and glvo an acoount of herself
before bolng nllowod to proceed.
Tho sohoouor was off Port Antonio, and
making good time boforo a stiff broozo,
whon on tho 11th lust, sho sighted a
steamor flying tho Spanish Aug followlug
her. Captain Quick at first paid no at
tention to tho stranger, but after un hour
or so noticed thnt she was signalling him
to stop. Ho thon oxaminod her more
closoly, but could only make out that sho
looked llko a largo tugboat, such as Is
usually to be found In tho harbors about
Philadelphia, Now York and other Amer
ican soaports. While he was making up
his mind what course to pursue a puff of
smoke curled up over tho stoamor's port
bow and a round shot whistled uncom
fortably closo to tho schooner's mainmast
and plunged Into tho water on tho other
quarter.
Captain Quick gave the order to haul In
sail and bring tho vessel to, and whllo this
was being done one of the crow ran out
on tho bowsprit to take In sail. As ho
stood thoro tho gun on tho Spanish war
ship boomed again, and anothor shot sped
on its way toward tho Amorlcan craft,
this tlmo coming so close to her that tho
sailor on the bowsprit swoars ho dis
tinctly felt tho wind caused by its rapid
flight.
Tho Lane soon camo to a dead stop, and
tho gunboat draw up undor hor quarter.
boat was loworod, and four Spanish
marlnos, under tho command of a lieuten
ant In the Spanish navy, caino aboard.
They were fully armod, and their leader
vory civilly lifted his cap und domauded
to know from what port tlio Lane had
sailed and whlthor sho was bound. Cap
tain Quick gavo the required Information
and produced his cloarancc papers in proof
of his assertions. No further search was
made, and bho vossol was pormittcd to
contlnuo on her course without furthor
molestation.
Captain Quick says that bo could not
get tho nnmo of tho gunboat, although ho
tried to do so. Ho thinks that tho Lano
must havo boon mistaken for a filibuster
ing craft, but insists that thoro is nothing
In her nppoaranco to Justify this belief.
AS VIEWED AT WASHINGTON.
If u Solid Shot Was Fired tho Case May
Prove Most Serious.
Washington, July 25. Tho govornmont
officials horo have rccoived no information
in regard to the firing on tho schooner
Carrio A. Lano by a Spanish war vossol
off Port Antonio. Tho gonoral opinion of
naval officers who road tho report of tho
affuir, as described by Captain Quick, is
that tho Spaniard did not oxcood his au
thority in overhauling tho schoonor If tho
lattor was in tho territorial waters of Cuba.
Tho Spanish government has a right to
overhaul and learn tho character of any
vessels within tho throe mile limit that
might bo suspected of having on board
thoso entertaining designs against tho
government or a cargo intended for the
insurgonts.
If any report of tho affair bo mado to
tho stuto dopartmont somo steps will likely
bo taken by this government should the
circumstances seem to warrant it. If the
statoment of Captain Quick that a solid
shot was first fired directly at his vessol is
sustained it may mako the case a most
serious one.
