Startling Evidence Against Insur
ance Swindler Holmes,
PERHAPS SIX TIMES A MURDERER
The Missing Hoy, Howard L'ltezel, Prob
ably Murdered by Holmos In Indian'
npolts mill Hit Hotly Tnhcn Away In n
Trunk Tho Accused Non-Commlttnl.
Philadelphia, July 17. The discovery
ot tho dond bodies of the two girls, Nolllo
and Allco Pltozol, In n cellar In Toronto,
Canada, by Detective Goyor, of Phllndol
phln, Is the nil absorbing topio of conver
sation In police circles. Tho girls aro be
lieved to be tho victims of H. H. Holmos,
the lusurnnco swindler, now In Moyamon
Blng prison nwnltlng sentonco for swind
ling tho Fidollty Mutual Insuranco com
pany out of $10,000.
Holmos, who has himself confessed that
be has oommlttod enough crimes to hang
him half a dozon times, Is supposed to
havo first dellboratoly inurdored the
Pltezel girls' father and brothor and then
tho girls thomselvos.
These murders aro alleged to have boon
committed for tho purposo of getting tho
victims money. Besides tho aboVo crimes,
Holmes Is supposed to havo dono away
with Mlunlo and Nollie Williams, whoso
money he admits having obtained,
swindled several flro Insurance companies
out of largo amounts, and otherwlso com
mitted depredations which will hand him
down as one of tho most notorious addi
tions to tho criminal annals of tho coun
try. Holmos was In consultation for nearly
two hours with Assistant District Attor
neys Barlow aud Flnlottor yostorday. Tho
prlsonor has grown a beard, and this and
tho other changes ho has undorgono would
sorvo to bo valuablo aids to him If he was
again oscaplng from justice.
District Attorney Graham had issued an
order to Suporlntondont Porklns, of Moya
monslng, that Holmos was not to be per
mitted to sooany nowspapors In which ap
peared an account of tho finding of tho
Pltozol children. Beforo tho order had
reached tho prison, howevor, somo of tho
morning papors had reached Holmes, and
ho was reading an account of Dotoctlvo
Goyer's terrible find in Toronto whon tho
special officer entered.
It wos ovidont that tho publication pro-
pared him for tho subsequent examination
by Assistant District Attorney Barlow.
It was learned that Holmes clung to his
old story of tho dlsappoaranco of little
Alico and Nolllo Pitozol. It Is said ho
fclgnod surprlso that their dead bodlos
had been found. He profossed to know
nothing of tho whereabouts of Howard
Pltozol.
Although nothing definite could bo
learned about tho examination further, it
was intimated that Holmos throw no fur
thor light on tho torrlblo mystorlos which
aro now shadowing tho case. '
Holmos was visltod in Moyamonslng
prison later by his oounsol, R. O. Moon,
who subsequently made tho statoraont
that his client had positively denied all
connection with tho murder of tho chil
dren. Ho asserted that tho last time he
saw them was in October of last yoar in
Toronto, whero ho had loft them in chargo
of Minnie Williams, the girl ho met in
Chicago. Ho assorts that ho knows noth
ing of what became of thorn after that
tfmo, and that ho always bolloved tho
Williams girl bad takon thorn to Europe.
He also insists that he knows nothing of
tho boy, and that ho had nothing to do
with tho death of Pltozol.
Suporlntendont of Polico Linden doolnros
that there is no possibility of convicting
Holmes of tho murder of the man fouud
In tho Callowhill street bouse, nnd says
tho authorities here will not oppose oxtra
dltlon to Canada.
HOWARD nTI!ZKI,'8 FATE.
Tho Hoy Probably Murdered by Holmes
While In Indlauapolls.
Indianapolis, July 17. Tho uunounco
mout that the bodies of tho two murdered
Pltezol chlldron had boon found buried in
a Toronto collar creatod a sensation, as
the children woro last soon allvo. by those
who know them, in this city. Detective
Geyer tracod tho chlldron from here to De
troit, and from there to Toronto. Ho was
unablo to get any ovidenco that tho boy
left this city allvo, and he went from horo
bellovlng that the boy had been murdered
and his body shlppod from horoiu a trunk.
Tho Journal prints an nrtlolo contain
ing the statoment that Howard Pltezol,
tho brother of Alico and Xelllo, was be
yond doubt murdered in this city on Oct.
7 last, presumably by Holmes, tho Insur
anco swindler. It was developed that a
oortaln express drlvor, by agroomout with
Holmos, called at the Old Clrcto House
on that dato aud removed through u rear
door a largo trunk, which is bollovod to
havo contained tho boy's remains. The
driver has identified tho picture of Holmes
as tho man who employed him.
