    THE EDUCATION OF PLANTS.
Store than n hundred years ago a Jesuit
missionary found a certain bark (now
called calisayn or clnclioua) in use among
the tribes of Teru as a' cure for fever. This
led to the discovery of quinine its alka
loid and active principle. Originally con
taining but a very small percentage of tbo
active principle, tho bark of tills tree, un
der careful cultivation, now yields several
times tbo amount.
By tbe same method tho Shakers of Mt.
Lebanon, (N. Y.,) havo developed, but as
to quantity and quality, tho medicinal
prinriples of tho horbs from which tho
Shaker Digestive Cordial, their well-kuown
remedy for Indigestion and dyspepsia, Is
now made. They have persuaded nature
to do for sntTerlng humanity vastly more
than she at first intended. As quinine is
without a rival in Its own field sothis prep
aration of the Shakers Is destined to be
come, for all tho ailments of the dlgestivo
tract, now grouped undor tho general head
of dyspepsia.
Some of tho symptoms calling for Its use
aro as follows: Distress after eating;
sickness and nausea; pains in the head,
chest, sides and back; foul tasto in the
mouth and the rising of an ollensivo gas
from the stomach; costlveues3 and Irregu
lar action of tho bowels; variable appetite;
sick headache; rlngiug in the ears; palpi
tation and heartburn; loss of sleep; the
"fidgets;" a tired and weary feeling; sore
muscles; mental depression, etc.
To relieve and cure this universal dis
ease (the source of most others), the
Shaker Digest! re Cordial is expressly
adapted. Liko quinine It is a specialty, a
specific. Its good effects are felt at ouce.
Unlike quinine It is pleasant to the palate,
always effective, never harmful. For this
the Shakers pledge their reputation as
herbalists. And its success thus far bears
them out.

There should be a general cleaning up
of the town the day before the Fourth.
Thousands of strangers will be here and a
good impression should be made upon

When Ponce-de-Leon sought to find
The fountain giving back lost youth,
It may be that he had in mind
That draught which seems to make a
truth
Out of tht) fable ages old,
For drinking it the old grow young,
It is, indeed, a draught of gold,
Surpassing all by poets eung.
The draught meant is Dr. Pierce's Gol
den Jledlcal Discovery, of course. It is a
most potent rejuvenator of the weakened
aud debilitated system. It drives out all
poison, all Impurity, enriches tho blood,
and makes tho old and worn out feel
young and vigorous. Pouce-de-Leon didn't
discover it, but Dr. Pierce did, and he
rightly named it when he called it a "Gol
den Discovery."
Dr. Pierce's Pellets cure permanently
constipation, indigestion and headaches.

GREAT DAY POR EMPEROR WILLIAM

ing of the llnltlc Cnnnl Fine Appear,
nnco of Uncta Sam's Vessel.
HoLTENAC, Juno 81. With much pomp
and ceremony, and with tho great powcri
it tho world, through tho guns of theli
warships, saluting him, Emperor William
of Gorniauy yesterday formally opened
tho Baltic and North Sea canal. Ho en
tered tho westoru opening of tho now
watorway at Brunsbuttel, not fur from
Hamburg, shortly after daylight on board
tho Imperial yacht Hohouzollern and ar
rived at tho oastorn opening of tho canal
hero shortly aftor noon,
There were throo mishaps, nil of a slight
nature, during tho passago of the Imperial
procession of about twouty vessels through
tho canal. Tho North German Lloyd steam
ship Kaiser Wllhclm II grounded for o
short time, but sustained no damage The
Russian gunboat Grossjusohtchl appar
ently deranged hormuchlnory, for sho was
taken In tow by a tug, and tho British
royal yacht Osborno, with tho Duko ol
York nnd his sulto on board.grounded ncai
Leveusau bridge This was tho most se
rious mishap of tho day, us all the vessels
following her had to anchor for a long
tlmo. Howover, sho was eventually floated
and proceeded on her way to Holtcnau,
after having caused a bad break In the
procession.
Both shores of tho canal wore lined with
cavalry nnd Infantry throughout ho pas
sago of tho procession, nnd ovory point oi
vuntugo along tho route of tho now water
way was occupied by thousands of people,
gay decorations were to bo seen every
where, flags Innumerable floating from
every point, aud an immonso amount of
powder was burned by tho assembled
squadrons when his majesty, on tho Ho
henzollcrn, emerged safely and triumph
antly from the Holtenau lock of tho canal.
Ono of tho foaturcs of the day was the
warm and frlondly reception glvon to the
French gunboat Sarcof us sho steamed
through tho canal In tho procession. The
French flag was cheered to tho echo, and
tho bands plnyed tho "Marsellalse" as the
French ship went by.
Another good feature of tho celebration
wus tho dinner given on board tho Hocho,
tho French flagshap, to tho ofllcers of tho
German battleship Baycrn, who had en
tertulnod the French ofllcers on Wednes
day. Upon the latter occasion the Ger
mnn commander toasted tho French presi
dent at tho same time us ho toasted tho
Gorman emporor, and referred to the in
ternational feeling of comradery existing
among naval men all the world over. The
French commander, Admlrul Menard, nt
yostcrduy's dinner, on board tho Hoche,
responded with a similar toast, which was
vigorously applauded, and so tho utmost
good feeling seemed to provuil on all sides.
In short, Emporor Wllllum appears to
havo engineered a brilliant spectacle In
which ho, and not tho canal, seems to have
beou tho central flguro, and It Is safo to
Imagine that it was ono of tho proudest
ilays of Ills lifo.
Last, but notlcast, it Is pleasant to know
thnt tho warships of the United States
the Now York, Columbia, San Francisco
and Murblchead formed a striking fea
turo of the naval dlspluy. They stood out
grandly among the other warships, thoir
wnlto nulls gloaming in tho suushlno,
contrasting prottily with tho dark hulls
of tho foreign warships, and thoir smart
appearance causing them to be greatly ad
mired by all.
