The signs of good times aro plentiful.
A few months ago thero were abotita dozen
empty storo rooms on Main street Now
there is but one.
The origin of tlio big Are In town Is still
a mooted question. The busybodios and
know-alls still keep up the agitation. Ono
woman has come forward with the state
ment that she scented smoke throe days be
fore tho firo got in its work. Next 1
The last big firo was a blessing in dls
guise. After much display of patience
(perhaps impatience would bo the better
term) and many disappointments, tho fire
companies aro to receive a now supply of
hoscand improved connections. It would
seem that it takes a big fire to make some
Councilmen realize a necessity.
Theise should be no rookeries on the
main streets of tho town. The owners of
those that remain can well afford to tear
them down and put on their sites buildings
- more in accord with modern ideas of com
fort, safety and convenience. If the town
had a building inspector many of the
Tookerles would bo wiped out of existence.
You can cut the green, stagnant water
along tho Lehigh Valley railroad in the
vicinity of the "rocks" with a knife.
Passengers on the trains say tho odor that
pervades the cars when they pass that
point is sickening. Attention has been
called to this nuisance repeatedly and
there can be no plea of ignorance. The
authorities should glvo tho matter immedi
ate attention.

Cleveland, June 20. Tho opening scs
lion of tho eighth national convention of
Republican clubs ndjournod at 1 p. m.
yesterday until 10 n. m. today, after dis
posing of all preliminaries and routino
matters. Thero wore no developments In
tho convention Indicating the contest be
tween thoso woarlng yellow and whito
badges, and representing respectively the
gold and tho sllvor standards, but in the
committee, rooms, nt tho Arcade, hotels
and olsowhero tho fight continued.
The conimlttco on credentials had con
siderable nmusoment over tho South Caro
lina contest. Tho committee on lenguo
work, rules and order of business nnd
nothing unusual. Tho conimlttco on time
nnd place selected Milwaukee, as tho
placo for tho next national conven
tion, and roforred tho selection of tho date
for the noxt national convention to tho
executive board, with instructions to se
lect any date after that of the Hcpublican
convention. Tho postponement of the
time to n dato subsequent to tho national
convention noxt year, was for the purposo
of avoiding nny such contest on resolu
tions as that which is now confronting
the dolegntos of tho clubs.
There was a movement to conclude the
work with tho banquet tonight, but tho
agltntlon beforo the committee on resolu
tions during tho afternoon and evening
dovoloped such differences that it Is not
likely tho convention will closo beforo to
morrow. Tho delegates from tho west nnd
south want to got away tomorrow.
As it 1b known that Governor MoKin
loy cannot get horo until tomorrow morn
ing, there Is a gonoral desire to wait for
him till that tliuo, and some chargo that
his frlonds aro seoking to prolong the pro
ceedings so as to have a big McKinloy day
tomorrow. Others shurgo that tho efforts
to expedite business so as to concludo to
night wero Intended to glvo tho delegates
an opportunity to leave beforo McKinley's
arrival.
Tho presidential booms are being looked
after as curofully as ever. Tho Iowa del
egatcs kcop open house for Allison, and
the Hoo3iers are quiotly keeping Harrison
In mind, while, the New England dele
gates uso tho Blaine tactics for Heed.
Mark A. Hanna, who is closo to McKin
loy, has been keeping open houso at his
mansion all week. Yesterday Mr. Hanna
gavo a dinner at tho Union League
Vhllo Mr. Hanna always bollovcs Mc
Kinloy to be tho man of destiny, he says
ho was novor so hopeful for the champion
of protection ns ho is nt this convention,
owing to tho expressions for his favorate
from other states. Ho does not think tho
silver question will embarrass tho protec
tionist. It was conceded yesterday that tho two
lending offices would bo divided botweon
tho gold and silver men by making Gen
eral McAlpln, of New York, president,
and John Byrnos, of Denver, secretnry,
but today It Is proposed to rofcr tho selec
tion of a socrctary to tho executive board.
It Is claimed that A. B. Humphreys was
first selected by the oxecutlve board and
nftorward ro-electod by the aunuul con
ventions. Tho silver men think tho New
York delegation, after feeling confident of
MoAlpln's selection, aro seoking to avoid
having an ultra-silver man for secretary.
Tho foaturo of yesterday was tho stiver
fight bofore tho committee on resolutions.
Tho committee organized with Congress
man J. B. Robinson, of Pennsylvania, as
chairman, and H. G. Knowlcs, of Dela
ware us secretary. Tho organization was
against tho silveritos, but tho latter wero
not discouruged and opened up tho fight
from tho start. The committee was In
open session till after 6 o'clock last ovon
lng, when, on motion of Congressman
Tuwney, of Minnesota, it adjourned till
8 p. m. for uu oxecutlvo session, nt which
tlmo a sub-commlttoo of nino was to bo
announced and tlmo given tho silver mon
and others for a honrlng. Tho resolution
of the sllvor men was offered, also other
silver resolutions. Tho opponents of free
sllvor offered tho financial plank of 1892;
also the recent Ohio plank adoptod at
Zuucsvlllo last month.
Tho compromise resolution attracting
most attention was presented by Senator
J. M. Thurston, of Nebraska, as follows:
"Wo approve the declaration of tho last
Republican convention that 'tho American
peoplo from tradition and Interest favor
bimetallism, and the Republican party
dciiiauds tho uso of both gold and silver
as a standard money, with such restric
tions uud undor such provisions to bo de
termined ns will securo tho mulntonanco
of tho parity of values of tho two metals,
so that tho purchuslng and dobt paying
power of tlio dollar, whether of silver,
gold or paper, shall be at all times equal,
and rofor tho action for a more specific
declaration to the next Republican con
vention, which alone has the powor to
bind tho party or make platforms and de
clare principles.' "
There was no discussion of tho tariff or
any other issues In tho committee of forty
six members except that of the silver
plank, and no differences of opinion ex
cept on the silver question. Nearly all tbe
members of tho committee wero Instructed
on tho silver question by their respective
state delegations, so that it will not bo dif
ficult to udopt a report. Still It Is con
ceded that thoso Instructions mako it al
most certain that both majority and mi
nority reports will be presented to tho
convention. Tho silver mon still havo con
fidence In their strength among the dele
gates, although a majority of tho commit
tee la against them.

tbout 7 o'clock u slight change for the

Tbe physicians still consider tho casa prac

Cures the Tobacco Habit
IN 0- TO 10 DAYS
OR MONEY REFUNDED.
Use All The Tobacco You Want Till Your "CraDing,"
is Gone.
Narcoti-Cure is the only remedy in the world that acts directly
on the nerves and drives the nicotine from the system in fiom four
to ten days. It leaves the patient in better health than before taking,
and is warranted free from any injurious ingredients.
Narcoti-Cure is popular because it allows the patient to use all
the tobacco he wants while under treatment, or until the "craving"
and '-hankering" arc gone. It is then no sacrifice to throw away
tobacco forever.
Narcoti-Cure is sold at the uniform price of S5.00 a bottle, and
one bottle cures.
Money refunded if a cure is not effected when taken according
to directions.
