we are to have this year means more for
Shenandoah than most people are nwaro
of. Now that the affair is in good hands
It behooves the peoplo generally to add
their aid and assistance. Shenandoah has
many features of interest to show visitors
besides the special attractions of the day
A little effort will accomplish a great deal.
The joint parade Bhould bo made a hum
mer. The Columbia Hose Company will
hold up its end by participating In the
parade on tho Fourth, giving a fantastic
parade on tho Fifth, and holding a monster
picnic on both days at Columbia Park,
There will bo a grand pyrotechnical dis
play at the park on both evenings.

This morning members of the Legislature
and a number of other citizens of tho
county mot in tho office of Congressman
Brumm at Pottsvllle to appoint a com
mittee to wait upon Governor Hastings
and protest in behalf of Schuylkill county
against the signing of the bill creating the
nw county of Quay. Hon. M. P. Fowler
was selected to represent Shenandoah on
the mission.

Defaulter Taylor's Movements.
Chicago, June 17. W. W. Taylor, ex
state treasurer of South Dakota, did not
put In an npponrauco at tho Palmer House
yesterday as was expected. Ho was In the
city, however, for a short time, although
his whereabouts could not be ascertained.
H. A. Taylor, of Lafayctto, Ind., a brother,
was ut tho Palmer. Ho said his brother
did not desire to bo Interviewed. Ho would
not say whero tho brother was, but said
he would leave for South Dakota during
tho night. It was reported that Attorney
General Crawford, of Dakota, was with
Taylor.

Williamsport, Pn., June 17. A dis
tressing accident occurred hero whon Mrs.
fuelson A. Byors, wiio of n lumberman,
and her 4-ycar-olu grandson wore run
down and killed by ;i trolloy car. The
grandson's namo Is Nelson B. Allen, nnd
his home Is In Buffalo, N. Y. Tho llttlo
follow was crossing tho track In front of
a trolloy car, when his grandmother ran
to save him. Sho stumblod and fell as
sho reached him, and both wcro crushed
beneath tho car. Slnco tho electric cars
began to run here four persons have beon
killed.
Trustee Duss Sharp Move.
Beaver Falls, Pa., Juno 17. A rather
sharp movo has been made by Trustee
Duss, of tho Economy socloty, whoso case
Is now In the courts. During tho session
it transpired that Duss had sold tho inter
est of thf socloty in tho Little Saw Mill
Run railroad to a coal company for J1O0,
000, and had paid a mortgage against tho
society amounting to 14)0,000 with tho pro
ceeds. This disposed of some of tho most
valuable assots for which tho defendants
are lighting.
A Minister Deposed.
CAIE MAY", June 17. Tho Cape May
Court House Baptist church, at a congre
gational mooting, doposed its pastor, Rov.
T. E. Richards, for having lryjucod two
young women members of tlichurch to
follow him In a roving gospol itinerary
through tho mining region of Pennsyl
vania against the entreaties of tholr pa
rents. Rov. Richards has not yot returned,
and his wife and children are being cared
for by charitable porsons.

Flemisotos, N. J., Juno 17. While at
tempting to secure a cork which became
loose from his llsh Hue Wostcott Carpen
ter, the 21-year-old son of ex-Senator John
Carpenter, of Clinton, fell Into tho Karl-
tan river, and was drowned. Edward
Seals, n boy who was near by, caught
Carpontor as ho came up the llrst time,
crying for holp, but was unablo to hold
the drowning man. His body has been
recovered.
Drowned While Trying to Kescue Ills Son.
Annapolls, Md., June 17. W. H. Korr,
of Ilchestor, Howard county, Md., was
drowned from his yacht Watanga yester
day afternoon In attempting to save his
6-year-old son, who had fnllon ovorboard.
The boy was rescued by Captain Durtls,
of Annapolis, nnd Mr. Kerr's body was re
covered soon after. Mrs. Kerr aud a party
of friends wore aboard the boat.

Shovlin, aired 21 years, wns drowned In
tho Schuylkill rlvor yesterday by tho cap
sizing of a rowboat oocupled by lilm and

night Samuel Keeler, an inmato of the
almshouse, rolled out of bed while suffer
