of the Lehigh Valley llailroad. Tho con
dition of affairs hero Is a disgrace to any
civilized community and joint action
should be taken to abate tho nuisance and
punish tho people who aro responsible for
it if they fail in tho future to abide by tho
sanitary regulations which have been en
acted at so much expense. Tho locality
stated is known as "tho rocks." Barracks
and hnts aro huddled together almost to
tho brink of tho promontory andthooccu
pants dump all their refuse and 111th over
the edgo without regard to what becomes
of it, or the inconvenience and distress It

leading down to tho Lehigh Valley Hail
road are reeking with filth and tho sight Is
sickening to tho passengers who aro

A Good Example.
Sometimes ono finds it veneration. In

gentleman got on to o crowded car. Ho

tion of tho Irlsh-Ainorlcnn military union
was hold yesterday In this city. Tho con
vention nssomblod at 1 o'clock and re
mained In session until 6 o'clock. J About
800 delegates wero prosent from various
sections of tho country. Tho mooting was
called for tho purpose of adopting measures
for the ulHllntlon of all Irish-American
military organizations with the union In
vlow of probnblo exigencies in connection
wlih tho question of Ireland's Indepen
dence and also to consider tho ndvlsabillty
of having nn enenmpmcut noxt year for
tho assembling of Irish-American troops
from tho dllTcront states.
Tho convention was called to order by
tho commander-in-chief, General Will-
lam F. Kolly, after which tho creden
tials of the dolcgatcs were examined.

It was also agreed that French, Polish
and Hungarian military bodies In sympa
thy with tho Irish movement bo per
mitted to Join the union. Tho Philadel
phia signal corns, commanded by Colonel
Buscho, and tho Lafayotto Guards of
Brooklyn, Captain L. Grass, have signi
fied their desiro for affiliation. Resolutions
woro adopted tendering tho gallant pa
triots of Cuba their heurtiest wishes for
triumph of their causo. A resolution ex
pressing regrot nt tho retirement from the
olllco of quortermaster genoral of colonel
Honry Boylan, of Philadelphia, and ten
dering him thanks for his earnest labors
for many years to promote tho interests of
the union was also adopted
The convention, which was held behind
closed doors, thou adjourned after five
hours deliberation.

Ainerlcan elub, composed of 300 of the
most Influential Irlshmon In tho city, ap
provo of tho movement which Is secrotly
under way throughout the United States
looking to tho emancipation of Iroland by
a rusort to arms. The club has raised sev
oral thousand dollars for tho emancipation
fund, and ono of tho members Is authority
for tho announcement that nearly $2,000,
000 has already been raised in the United
States. It Is announced that somo time
this summer tho sympathizers with tho
movement will hold a national convention,
probably In Baltimore or Uostou.
Wild Car Carried Death.
Elkins, W. Va., June 17. An accidont
occurred on tho Dry Fork railroad, bull 1
ina from Hendricks to Womelsdorf, In
which four mon were killed. A party of
railroad workmen wishing to rldo to tholr
homes boarded a freight car, loaded with
lumber, and stnrtcd It down tho grade to
the Dry Fork crosslug. Tho car got be
yond thoir control, and finally all Jumped.
About a mile bolow tho car came upon a
hand car loaded with workmen. Before
any could jump the two cars' came to
gether. The men on tho hand car were
hurled Into tho air and mangled by the
other car. The killed are: John Dalley,
married; Michael Kettorman, unmnrrlod;
Follx Hay, single, and Solomon Wll
loughby. Michael Daran, the other per
on on tho car, miraculously escaped with
a few bruises.
Fatal Riot at an Kntertalnment.
Nashville, Juno 17. At Tally Station,
II. Marshall county, while a school enter
tainment was In progress a terrible fight
occurred, resulting in the death of one
man and tho serious cutting and boating
of several others. Claude Pylant and
Autroy Watson ronewod au old feud,
fought, nndj both were fnugerously
wounded. Friends of both joined in the
flaht. using sticks, knives, stonos and
razors. Pylant died yestorday nnd four
others nre In a serious condition. Tho
neighborhood is greatly oxoltod.

Louisville, June 17. The Domocrnts
of Kentucky held u series 6f precinct mass
meeting Saturday, and chose delegates to
tho county conventions to he hold this
afternoon. Many delegatos are uniu
structod. The sound mouoy men have
shown great strength- Tho delegates
chosen lu this, Jefforson county, are
nearly all for Clay for govornor and for
sound money. Many sound money dele
aates'aro for Hardin for govornor. Both
Clay and Hardin expressed themselves as
satisfied with tho outlook.

WlNNlPKO, June 17. William Farr,
Canadian Pacific railway engineer, who is
charged with attempted cremation of his
wife nnd chtldrcn, In order that ho might
marry a woll kuowu young woman of this
city, has been captured near Vancouver,
from where ho was about to sail for Aus
tralia. Farr escaped from Jail here while
awaiting trial.

worked In adjoining chambers in the

out thnt Yocksta had boon killed by n fall
of conl. Tho body was found and was to
havo been burlod yestorday, but suspicion
had been aroused, and an oxnminntion ro
vertlcd throo bullet wounds.
A number of persons had gathered at
the house and one of them who had holpcd
to preparo tho body for burial remarked
that It wus not badly bruised, considering
tho quantity of coal and rock that had
fallen on it. A physlcnn presont over
heard tho remark and decided to investi
gate tho mattor. Tho room was cleared ol
mourners and tho body lifted from thi
cofflu nnd examined. Three bullot holci
wero found, one In the forehead nnd two
In tho breast. Tho funeral was postponed
and Anthony GlmlteswnS arrested for th
crime.

Nkw Yohk, Juno 17. Today with the
booming of cannon, bursting of rocketa
and tho cheering of thousands tho Harlem
ship canal, which is to unite the water ol
tho Hudson with Long Island sound, will
be formally openod to trnfflc. At tho cel
ebration Governor Mortou and stnff, Gov
ernor Worts of Now Jersey nnd staff, and
tho mayors of Now York, Brooklyn, Jer
sey City, Yonkors, Mount Vernon and
other cities will tako part, and with the
mammoth marine parade and tho pictur
esque procession on land the opening ol
tho now waterway will bo fittingly ob
served. Tho fodoral government will bo ropro-
sontcd by n number of wnrshlps. The
Atlanta will be stationed nt tho eastern
end of the canal, nnd tho Cincinnati at
tho western or southern end. At the be
ginning and at tho ending of tho cere
monies tho two warships will boom forth
salutes. As tho first salute is fired two
barrels of fresh water, one from Lake
Chnmplnln and tho othor from Lake Su
perior, will bo emptied Into the salt water
of the canal to typify the union with the
great lake system.
Fourteen Killed In a Death Chamber.
VIENNA, Juno 15. Soventy people gath
ered yesterday In the death chamber of a
young man at Hovlgno, n seaport town of
Austria, on tho west const of Istrin,
In tho vicinity of tho Adrlntlo sen.
Tho flooring of the chamber collapsed, and
all fell to the ground floor and thenco Into
n deep collar, the walls of tho houso fall
ing on top of tho unfortunate victims. All
tho inhabitants of the town hurried to tho
spot, tho flre brigado wns called out nnd
tho soldiers in tho town also rushed to the
sceno. All united lu efforts to remove tho
debris. This being done roveiiod tho fnct
that fourteen of tho mourners had been
killed and thirty Injured. The unhappy
young woman who had boon tho fiancee
of tho deceased man was found dead in the
ruins close to tho coiliii.

New Ohleans, June 17. Judge Felix
P, Poche, well known as a lawyer nnd

The Decrease In Immigration.
Washington, June 15. A report from
tho bureau of statistics shows that tho
number of Immigrants who nrrlved dur
ing May was 49,141, nn Increase over May,
1894, of nbout 16,000. During the oloven.

ing off of about 45,500.
