Tho Ingenuity of Some of Our Youngsters to Avoid tho Inevitable, Liko tho beginning of life, Its termina tion, death, is ono of tho recurring puzzles of childhood, writes Professor Cully in Tiio Popular Science Monthly. This might bo illustrated from almost any nutoblo' graphical reminiscences of childhood, Hero Indeed tho mystery is mado tho moro impressive and recurrent to consciousness by tho clement of dread. A little girl of 8H years asked her mother to put a great stono on her head, becauso sho did not want to die. Sho was asked how a stono would prevent it and answered, with per fect childish logic, "Becauso I shall not grow tall If you put a great stone on my head, and peoplo who grow tall get old and then dlo. Death seems to bo thought of by tho un sophisticated child as tho body reduced to a motionless stnto, devoid of breath ntd uuublo any longer to feel or think. This is tho idea suggested by tho sight of dead animals, which but fow children, however closely shlolded, can escape. Tho first way of envisaging death seems to ho as a temporary state like sleep, which It so closoly resembles. A little boy of 2H years, on hearing trom ills mother of tho doath of a lady friend, at onco nsked, "Will Mrs. P still bo dead when we go back to Londonf" Tho knowledge of burial leads tho child to think much of tho grnvo. Tho instinc tive tondenoy to carry on tho idea of lifo and scntienco with tho burled body Is 11 lustrnted In C 's fear lest tho earth should bo put over his eyes. Tho follow iug obsorvntion from tho Worcoster col lection illustrates tho same tendency: "A fow days ago II , aged 4 yoars and 4 months, came to mo and said, 'Did you know thoy'd takon Deacon W to Graf tonf I, 'Yos.' H : 'Well, I s'poso it's tho best thing. His folks (meaning his children) 'are buried thero, and thoy wouldn't know ho was dead If ho was burled hero.' " This rovcrslon to snvago notions of thodoad in speaking of a Chris tlan deacon has its humorous nspoct. It is strungo to notlco hero the pertinacity of tho natural impulse-.
