DJULFA, Russia, May 80. Tho special correspondent Ot tho Assocloted Press who Is Investigating tho situation In Armenia has furnished the following correspon dence: Tho Turkish government Is taking prompt measures to provent the uprising of tho Armenian revolutionists next month. Within tho past few days all roads leading from Persia to Van have been closed by order of the Turkish government, tho intention being to shut off communi cation between tho revolutionary leaders in Persia and their agents In Armenia. Tno last caravan that tried to get through to Van from Khol was seized by Turkish officials. On tho person of ono of tho caravan drawers was a letter from an un known writer In Salinas, addressed to an Armenian in Van. Tho writer of tho let ter announced to his friend that 600 revo lutionists armed with rifles wero waiting in tho Persian villages of Salmas Plain for an opportunity of making an attack on Van, and asked for information with regard to the disposition ot tho govern ment troops In and about Van. The selzuro of tho caravan and the blocking of tho roads to Van have caused no end of consternation to tho Armenian revolutionists in Persia, as this action seriously lnterforcs with some of their most Important arrangements. However, they assure me that other roads through tho mountains will be found, and that the work will go steadily forward. Tho clos ing of tho caravan roads, however, will hamper the mo voir) en ts of the revolution ists for several months. From the lower valleys comes word that tho Kurds are fighting among themselves, probably as a sort of practice for some serious work to come. Tho Kurdish ac tivity apparently extends as far south as Mousol, on tho Tigris river. Within the past wook tho Turkish consul at Sautch- Bulak, In Persia, tried to cross over into Turkey with an armed escort of twelve men, but ho was turned back by the Kurds, who hold possession of all the roads. The consul returned to Persia threatening all sorts of vengeance on tho heads of tho Kurds. At tho samo tlmo the Turkish officials in tho towns near tho border wero chased out of tho country by tho Kurds. They took refugo in Ravenduz, where they are now. Tho Kurds havo warned them not to return. Tho Armenians have received this news with unspeakablo joy. They liopo that Kurds and Turks will got into a fight and exterminate each other. A reasonable explanation for this activ ity of the Kurds may bo found in tho con tents of a letter which tho Sheik Abdel- Kadr has recently written from tho sul tan's palace In Constalntinoplo to his brother In the mountains of Kurdistan. Sheik Abdol-Kadr is a son of tho great sheik who mado tho attack on the city of Ouroumla, Persia, fourteen years ago. In tho letter Abdol-Kadr announced that tho sultan had appointed him to command tho Ilomldoh regiment of Irregular Kurd' ish troops, and that thero was to bo a great war, during winch he and his troops wero to capturo tho Russian city of Kars, Many well Informed porsons In western Persia bellovo that Asia Minor Is on tho verge of u great religious war which tho sultan of Turkoy is forming upon tho world in order to retain his prestige among the Mohainmodans, many of whom have been for some time grumbling at him for his lukowarmnoss in tho causo of tholr re llgion and threatening to deprivo him of bis cnllphato. As eight months havo passed since tho Sassoun and Moosh massacres, and noth ing has been dono in consequonco by tho Turkish government, tho Moslems of Per sia aro beginning to bellovo that nothing will bo dono, and that Kuropo s protests count for nothing. As n result tho Per sians aro beginning to talk of having massacro or Ulirlstlans on their own ac count. 1 havo boon very frankly told in Persia that if nothing is dono to punish tho Turks for tho Sassoun affair tho zeal ous Moslems of Persia will seek to win tho favor of their God by scourging and driving out the Christians, Since the facts of tho Sassoun massacro wero mado known tho Moslems have grown even mora Intolerant and resent ful of tho presence of Chrlstalns among thorn, and esDOClally of Christian mis slonarles, and tho hatred of tho Moslem priests has apparently grown more viru lent and outspoken. Beyond tho occa slonal sacking of n Christian village along tho western border of Persia, uowover, no violence has been attempted, but tho more bitter of the Mosloms make no conceal ment of their Intentions, Tho news which I have just received of impending trouble in JBltlls, as well as In Van, is not reassuring to persons who havo beon putting faith in tho moral in fluenco attending the presence of tho for eign delcgrates on tho commission of in quiry at Moosh. My Information Is to the effect that HI tils and Van aro on the brink of" a massacre, and that troublo may be looked for at any moment. Not only that, but tho porll to Christian people has spread eastward into Persia. To Continue tho Olneyvllle Strive, PnoviDIiNCE, May 30. Flvo hundred striking Atlantic mill weavers voted unan imously by secret ballot to remain away from their looms next Monday morning, when tho mills reopen. Tho Saxon weav ers passed a voto to tho samo effect, and everything points to tho Fletcher und Mtinton wcavors taking tho same action. Weybosset has ilot beon recorded. River side help Is inclined to return to work. It is uvident from advices received from Woo'itsockcti and other toxtllo centers that 01uoyvliKls to bo mado tho wago regu lator. Evorytlilnrt afloat Dnlteil in DoIor Honor tn the .IliiinmoUi l'.ilnce fJteam.r, Which Will Start .in Her First Trip Across tht Occnn on Wednesday Next. New York, May 80. Tho St. Louis, the new steamship of tho International Navi gation line, cotnplotcd her trial trip at sea ot 4:B0 o'olocK yesterday afternoon, at which tlmo she nindo fast to hor pier at the foot of Vesey street, North river. Com ing up the bay the St. Louis was the recip ient ot a splendid ovation, the due of a craft of hcrlmposlngappcarnnceand mng- nmcent proportions. Everything alloat saluted the newcomer, and tho responsive cheers from her decks were so frequent ns to try tho throats of the throe or four hun dred people who gave them utterance. The trial ttln becan at 9 o'olock Mon day mornlno. Tho St. Louis left her builders' yards at Philadelphia on Satur day, bunday and Sunday night sho lay at anchor outsldo tho capes of Delaware, the expectation being that early Monday morning, her compasses adjusted, she would put to sea. But the morning was '88y, and tho adjustment of compasses was not completed until about 0 o'clock. 'lucn tne steamship was nottcn under weigh and the sea trail was on. Captain W. Q. Handle was In command, but until she passed Quarantlno yesterday after noon tho builders controlled herevory movoment. Representatives of tho Cramos exnrcsB satisfaction at tho result of tho trial, which in particular showed the possession of en gines well nigh perfect. Only twice dur ing tho trip did any part of her machinery become heated, and that was the worst that developed. Ono journal and one bearing did become hot, but that was at tributed, and doubtless correctly, to neg ligence on tho part of oilers. it liad been promised that tho St. Louis should develop a speed of Si knots. This was not fully realized during tho trip. For thirty minutes Tuesday afternoon the groat ship was propelled through the water at tho rato of 20 knots an hour, and in order to do that it was found necessary to force tho draft. Tho coal In tho bunkors is blamed for most of tho difficulty In this regard. It Is represented that it was of inferior quality, and that it was very dif ferent from tho handplckcd coal which has been used on board tho cruisers recently built for tho United Stntes when they wero sent out to make their speed trials. Tho steam pressure was at no tlmo abovo 160 pounds, whllo to produce tho stipu lated speed 200 pounds may bo required. with some slight alterations in tho fur naces, and with a most careful selection of coal, It is represented that the St. Louis will, on her transatlantic voyage, which begins Juno 5, develop a well sustained speed of 21 knots an hour. Tho woother during tho short run to sea from the capes of Delaware to North Shoal, off Nantucket, was not such as to put tho St. Louis to a test, for tho ocean was at no tlmo moro than modorately rough, whllo at the tlmo tho 20 knot rato of speed was reached the sea was as quiet as it could well bo. On tho whole tho builders and owners of tho St. Louis havo good reason to bo pleased with tho result of tho fltty-flvo hours' trial trip and tho best of grounds for claiming that her place Is among tho fastest, as It lncontestably Is, amongst tho staunchest and most palatial ot the trans atlantic liners. On tho arrival of tho St. Louis at, her dock a letter of thanks from citizens of St, Louis was presentod to President Grlscom by Goorgo H. Morgan, roprosoutlng tho St. Louis donors of tho magnificent li brary prosonted to tho new vessel. This library includes 1,022 volumes for tho llrst cabin and (139 for the second cabin.
