with those who had come to listen to tho
addresses and look upon tho chief recip
ient of the honors of the occasion, Arch
bishop Williams, and the other dlstin
gulshcd Cathollo dignitaries present.
Archbishop Williams took his placo at
tho head of tho guests' table, with Cardi
nal Gibbons and Governor Groonhalge on
his right, and Mgr. Satolll, Alderman Al
len and Archbishop Corrigan on his loft,
Tho menu was fittingly olabornto. After
tho banquet Fathor Ronan, of St. Potor's
church, Dorrhester, who acted as toast-
master, opened tho oxorciscs with a brief
address, ending with an introduction of
Rov. Thomas Magcnneas, who gave the
addresses for tho clergy.

Archbishop Williams then aroso to make
response to tho addresses of representa
tives of tho clergy nud laity. Tho arch
bishop began by saying that this was tho
noisiest day that he hud passed in fifty
years,

nnd laity has always responded to any
call matlo by mo, and they have been most

This afternoon I havo received a gold
medal and a lattor to my sol f containing
congratulations from Leo XIII on this our
jubilee colebratlon. After a day of vari
ous emotlous, in which 1 havo heard a
great many exaggerations of what I havo
done, let nio tell you that I hnvoonly boon
tho standard bearer, and whan ynu salute
a standard bearer you saluto all those who
fought with him. In conclusion, I trust
the Union will remain at peaco; that tho
country will bo prosperous, and that dour
old Boston will havo special blessings,
Mgr. Satolll was tho next speaker, and
after reading tho pap.il Iottcr his address
was read by his secretary. After referring
at length to the sincere affection of the
holy father for tho archbishop of Boston,
tho address refers to tho pope's labors as
archbishop and cardinal, concluding as
follows:
"Thus Divine Provldenco, by thirty
years of episcopate, prepared him to bo
the supremo pontiff for this ending of tho
Nineteenth century, and from tho narrow
limits of a dloccso has transferred him to
a flold of action which embraces tho en
tire world. It is tho opinion of tho wiso
that one of tho greatest blessings of God
is the raising up of men specially fitted for
urgont necessities when they present
thoinsolvos, and there could bo no moro
striking proof ot tbe truth of this idea
than tb'it furnished by tho life of Leo
XIII. It would bo difficult to say whether
ho had been prepared for tho church at
this particular period, or whothcr the
church had been specially prepared for his
woudorful activity
Governor Greonhalga, of Massachusetts,
followed. His excellency paid both official
nnd nersonal tribute to the worth and
valuablo llfo of tlib archbishop as a cltizon
of tho common wealth and a leador of men.
Cardinal Gibbons was to have spoken on
tho "American Hierarchy," but said ho
would ask the favor of being allowed to
speak of inneinbiir of the American hler-
archy, John j. wuiiams, archbishop of
Boston. After this Introduction the car
dinul delivered an eulogy on tho arch
bishop and gave a historical skotch of the
dloceno of Boston since 1844.

Receiver MoFulta. of tho whisky trust,
charges ax-President J. B. Grecnhut nnd
Nelson Morris with using tho funds of tho
trust for outside sacculation of a personal
character, in which thoy met with a loss
of 50J,003. They are also charged with con-
snirlnir to secure the assent of tho directors
to tho issuance ot 51,000,003 bonds, whicn
they so manipulated as to secure a profit
to thcmsolves ot 81X1,000, besides securing
tho payment of their losses In speculation.
Other defendants In the bill nro W. M.
Hobart. J. W. Freiberg. Louis Maddux
and tho Central Trust Company of New
York.
All but (he trust company nro charged
with duplicity in tho bond transaction.
Tho bill alleges that at a special mcctlne
of tho board of directors ot tho old trust
In Chicago, on May 17, 1603, a resolution
was adopted providing for the issuance of
bonds at 0 pur cent, interest, payable in
twenty years, to tho amount of 8,000,000,
$3,500,000 of the bonds to bo placed with
tho Contral Trust company, of Now York,
us security for the payment of rebiite
claims.
Several months preceding tho date of
meeting, owing to a vast speculation upon
tho Stock Exchange, to meot loses In
curred Messrs. Groenhnt, Morris and Ho
bart, it is claimed In the bill, used a large
amount of funds of tho trust without the
authority of tho board of directors. Their
losses amounted to about $500,000, and tho
receiver nllivres that the financial condi
tion of the trust was greatly Impaired
thereby.
Greeuhut nnd Morris, tho bill alloges,
then conspired to enrich themselves by
purchasing a large amount of tho bonds at
a reducod price, and without tho Knowl
edge of the other mombers of the board of
directors. This they managed through
collusion with outsldo parties, and they
and their confederates now have control
of the bond l.isuo, which It is charged they
scoured by Illegal methods.
Tho receiver prays that tho courts en
join all of the defendants from disposing
of the bonds to other parties; that they bo
required to answer, and that an uccount
lng bo had; that any amountof the bonds
ascertained to bo owing by the trust bo
paid for at tho purchaso price of fifty cents
on tho dollar, and that tho balance of the
bonds be canceled by tho trust. Tho re
ceiver recites that he is desirous of wind
ing up the utlalrs of the trust.

COLUMBIA, S. C, May 17. The state ad
ministration has by no means given up
the registration laws declared unconstltu
tional by Judgo Goll Only ouo county
supervisor of registration, W. B. Rlggs
Green, of Richland, was enjoined from
performing tho duties of his offices. All
will on tho first Monday In June, ono of
tho days set iipart for registration, pro
ceed as if no injunction had been issued
When Green is nrrested for contempt ol
court habcus corpus proceedings for his
release will bo brought before the supreme
court at Washington, nnd thus a review
of Guff's decision will be obtained.
Oscar Wilde Will Not Decamp.
London, May 17. The attorney for
Oscar Wilde, referring to rumors that his
client would forfeit his ball, stated to a
reprcseutatlvo of the Associated Press that
Wlldo would certainly appear for trial on
Monday. Wilde is at present staying at
his mother's house In Chelsea. His health
is in a wretched condition.
Live .Stock liurned to Death.
Reading, Pa., May 17. The bam, house
nud all outbuildings on tho farm of Peter
Moycr, In Tulpehoekon township, were de
stroyed by fire during the night. Tho loss
Is $5,000. Kleveu cattle and 111 teen hogs
perished.
