Nkw YoitK, May 10. The first real trial

at liravosend. mid as far as could bo seen
It Is likely to become popular. Tho ovont
of tho day was tho Brooklyn handicap for
a 10,000 purse. The morning hours woro
anything but pleasant, for a cold wind
blow across tho track, tho air was rnw and
chilly, and the overcast sky inado it soom
as if v.iln would fall at any minute. The
track was very muddy and thorn woro
yoolg of wntor nil ovor it. Tho clords be
gan to brook away at about 10 o'ch ck.nnd
thora was plonty of hluo sky and t-unllglit
by noon. Tho bookmakers had plonty of
work to do, but thoy did not shout tho
jrtus, and tho hotting was done quietly.
From 1 o'clock until tho start of tho handi
cap hotting was In ordor, and Dr. Blco and
Itamapo wero about equal choices, al-
thotiBh It finally sottlod down with tho
tho lattor ns first cholco.
At 1:30 tho horsos camo to tho post.
Thoy woro Hornplpo, Lazzaroue, Sir Wal
ter, Counter Tenor, llcy Kl auntn Anita,
Uoclaro, Dr. Blco, Rubicon, Assignee
Bnsdotlnw, Ramapo and Ed Koarnoy.
Appreciating tho necessity of an oven
start, Starter Uowo detained tho horsos at
tho post until 1:51, whon, catching them
woll In ordor and In action, down went
tho ling and tho raco was ou. Hamilton,
on Hornplpo, was first to dort out of the
bunch. Then camo Grimu with Ramapo,
and Llttleflold on Bassotlaw, the others
being closo up.
suddenly whips wont up In tho nlr and
camo down on tho sides of tho horsos,
spurs wcro jabbod with cruel fierceness
and off dashed Assignee, intent on mak
ing tho running for his stablo companion,
Hornpipe, who foil back in tho bunch.
At tho quart or Assignee was half u length
batter than Ed Kearney, who had Ram
apo at his hind quarters, Dr. Rice and Sir
Walter being close up. Assignee led to
the half mllo post, where his wind gavo
out, and ho rolinqulshcdflrst place to Sir
Walter, soolng which Hamilton, on Horn
pipe, again out loose. Sir Walter was a
great horse nt thU stago of tho raco.
Closely attended by Dr. Rico, Roy El
Santa Anita, Ramapo and Hornpipe, tho
game little Sir Waltor made tho pace un
til well down tho homo strotch. Thon tho
heavy weights and equally heavy track
began to tell a tale of distress for tho fav
orites, and tho llghtwolghted youngsters
bogan to overpower them.
Thoy woro all at tho whip, and tho thor
oughly oxcltcd throng of men and women
yolled frantically nt their respective choices
to como on and laud tho great race. But
It was not to bo a favorite's triumph. A
furlong from tho finish Hamilton was soon
coming with Hornplpo llko a whirlwind.
On and on ho onmo, speeding by tho jaded
brutes In front of him llko n locomotlvo
running wild. Hornpipe's rush was somo
thlng that lltorally clovo tho touguos of
the shoutors to thoir mouths. Ho won In
S.llH.amid oppressive silence, by a longth
from tho 80 to 1 chance, Lazzaroue, who
had tho invaluable aid of tho veteran,
Isaao Murphy.
Lapping Lazzarono to tho saddle girths
was Sir Waltor, who gamely stood whip
and spur for more than half a milo and
proved himself tho gamcst horse in tho
race. Ramapo died nwny to a walk In tho
stretch, but Roy El Santa Anita hung on
gamely up to the last furlong post. He
was thon thoroughly done for, and was
inorolfully allowed to ond his journey in
poace. Sir Waltor's bulldog gamonoss was
one of tho stirring foaturos of tho raco.
Tho crowd wont broko to tho book
makers, there having boon only a few

Twenty thqusaud people witnessed the

Abbott Defeats O'Brien.
New York, May 10. The bouts at tho
Manhattan Athlotlc club last night wero
unimportant. After threo minor ovouts
George Slddons and Solly Smith fought
olght rounds at 120 pounds. Smith had
all the hotter of the battle, and tho Judges
declared hlra tho winner. Tho last ovont
was a six round bout at 133 pounds be
tween Al O'Brien, of Phlladelphla,'and
Stanton Abbott, of England. The last
round was a rattling one, and they mixed
It up. O'Brien did somo great lighting,
but Abbott had too groat a lead, and the
judges agreed on the Englishman as tho
winner.
STOCK AND PRODUCE- MARKETS.
Olosine Quotations of the New York and
Philadelphia Kxchanges.
New Youk, Hay 15. There was a renewal
of yesterday's selling movement on the Stock
Exchange today, and the transactions were
much greater in volume. For perhaps the
first time since the speculative boom became
pronounced, the bears were in the ascendant.
