Louisville, May 1. At separate under

bodies of porhaps two of tho most prom
inent poopioln tho state or Kontucky. Ono
that of Archlo Brown, boh ntul private
Bcorotary to Kentucky's chlof oxccutlvo;
tho othor that of Mrs. Fulton Gordon,
promlnont bocauso of her romarknblo
beauty nnd cxcollont family connections.
Tho story Is a sad one, and has caused one
of tho greatest sensations this city or stato
has ovnr llnnn rnllnil itnnn tn nlirnnlnln.
iirown came to Loulsvlllo In responso to
ft telegram from Mrs. Gordon, and met
her at 1025 Madison stroot, an evil resort
kopt by Lucie 13. Smith. Tho couplo Im
mediately went tonn upstairs room which
had been previously engnged, Half an
hour lator Fulton Gordon, tho woman's
husband, went to the liouso and ongngod a
lower room, saving that n woman would
join him shortly. Tho man closed nil tho
doors and a fow minutes later n commo
tion was hoard abovo, followed by a suc
cession of pistol shots. Then thoro was a
hurried movomont down stairs as Mrs,
Gordon flod from tho scono. A fow moro
shots rang out, and sho fell doad on tho
porch lu tho roar yard. Gordon left tho
houso and immediately Brown's corpso
was found up stairs.
Gordon, was arrested by OlUcors Kollly
and Lapalllo as ho was about to jump In
his buggy on a neighboring stroot. When
arrested ho said: "I shot both of thorn, I
caught thorn In tho act. They aro both
dead. I am shot too. Como with mo and
I'll show you whero they aro."
Gordon was as palo as a ghost and was
ovldontly vory weak. Tho officers and
Gordon walked to Luclo Smith's. Just as
thoy got Inside tho front door Gordon
staggorod and was about to fall, whon Of
ficer Kollly caught him. Ho was In a
fainting condition and Bomobody dashed
somo wator In his faco. Tho officers then
suinmonod tho ambulanco and Gordon
was sont to jail. Officer Lapalllo said ho
had known Mrs. Gordon by roputatlou for
somo tlmo. She had boon going by tho
namo of Rccso.
Never was there a moro sanguinary bat
tlo than tho ono fought on the second floor
of Luclo Smith's house. Gordon had no
difficulty In gottlng into tho room, as tho
fact that thoro aro no broken locks Indi
cates that tho doors wero left unlatched.
As soon as Gordon gained egress a desper
ate duel ovldontly began. Brown had a
thirty-eight caliber rovolvor, which was
found ompty after tho tragedy. Gordon
must havo had two pistols, as sis bullets
pierced Brown's body and threo that of
Mrs. Gordon. Tho bed on which Brown
and Mrs. Gordon lay was covered with
blood, showing that ono or both had boon
shot whllo in that position or that in the
strugglo ono or moro of tho wounded had
fallen there.
Gordon hlmsolf was covered with blood,
most of which doubtless was tho result of
contact with his wounded antagonist.
What part, If any, Mrs. Gordon took in
tho encounter, only her husband Is lu a
position to say.
Two bullets aro embedded In tho door,
several went through a window, threo are
burled In tho wall and two In tho celling.
Tho walls are smeared with blood. Tho
dingy carpet on tho floor Is saturated with
gore, and tho furnituro was badly broken
In tho fray.
Brown's body Is coverod with blood from
hoad to foot. Thoro wns no clothing on
tho body except a pair of knit drawers
and a pair of black socks. Tho undershirt
had been romovod and tho wounds wero
plainly visible
Mrs. Gordon's body wos round on the
collar door, faco downward, clothed only In
a chemise and a skirt, nnd in stocking
feet. Her hair was loose, and was hang.
ing about hor head in a tangled mass. Her,
faco was calm and gavo no sign of a strug
glo. Hor bosom was covered with blood
and hor skirt bespattered with tho fluid.
Hor hands wero tightly douched and hor
faco smeared with splotches of blood.
Gordon Is unhurt, but Is suffering from
norvous prostration. Gordon stated that
ho tried to kill himself after shooting
Brown nnd his wlfo, but tho cnrtrldgo
failed to oxplodo, and his hnnd was norv
ous. On his way to jail Gordon said that
he had suspected tho couplo for somo tlmo,
and about a week ago his suspicions wero
confirmed. Evorslnco ho had kopt a wntch
on his wlfo,
At 8 o'clock last night tho coronor's jury
rendered a vordlct of judtilliiblo homicide.
Govorncr Brown, accompanied by Sec
retary of Stato Hoadloy, nrrivedln the city
from Frankfort last ovoning, and Is stop
ping at tho Gait Houso. Tho governor Is
complotoly prostratod by tho affair.
Mrs. Gordon was Miss Nelllo Bush, of
this city, nnd her family Is ono of tho host
known and most prominent in this stato,
Her father was onco state librarian and
hor grnudfathor was Judgo Zacharlah
Wheat, chlof justlco of tho court of ap
peals of Kontucky, and ono of tho most
learned and distinguished of Kontucky
jurists. Sho eloped with Gordon about
ton years ago. Sho leavos throo children.
Brown was divorced from his vlfo a fow
years ago, and his intimacy with Mrs.
Gordon was the ground for the separation.
On account of the high social standing of
the partlos nono of tho facts wore mado
publlo at tho time of tho dlvorco.

Thkxton, May 1. Tho senato Investi

Taking ndvantago of a brief delay In tho

Ho charged tho stato for 41,500 maps, ro
