Nicaragua Must i ay tho Oasli la-
dosjnity Dnaudod,
TO CREATE A PACIFIC BLOCKADE.
Unless Nicaragua Yield at Once, to tlm Ul
timatum llrltlsli Troop Will be Landed,
the Custom Houses Will be Occupied and
Duties Collected.
Washington. April 25. Exact, official
liiforinntlon has been received as to Great
Britain's bolllgoroiit steps in Nicaragua.
British troops nro to bo landed nt Corlnto,
tho custom houses are to bo occupied by
tho British forces, and British forces are
to exorelso tho functions of collectors of
customs.
At tho sumo tlmo Nicaragua local com
merce Is to bo crlpplod by a blockado. Tho
limit of tlmo allowed Nicaragua to yield
expires today, and the blockado, landing
of troops and solzuro of customs Is to be
gin immediately thereafter.
Tho understanding Is that tho blockado
will begin tomorrow unless Nicaragua
yields to the demands In overy particular.
Thoro Is good reason to bollevo that tho
domnnds will not bo altered, rcducod or
compromised in the slightest particular,
ono of the main purposes of Great Britain
being to administer nlessonto Nicaragua,
and lndlroctly to all southorn republics as
to British mothods of redress.
Tho maneuvers will probably bo a "pa-
clflo blockado," as horotoforo oxplalncd,
care being taken to bring Nicaragua com-
morco to o standstill, and yet leave lor-
elgn commorco as froo as over. It Is said,
however, that Nicaragua's coast commorco
is vory small, so that Great Britain's pa-
cillo blockade may develop Into a more
foroiblo movo In order to mako It effective.
As to the landing of British marines at
Corlnto, which is now understood to bo
part of tho program, It Is stated by officials
that this will not meuaco or endanger tho
Interests of the United Statos or other for
eigners, s
Thoro Is good reason to bollevo that .Nic
aragua Is not likely to yield, but will al
low British troops to occupy Corlnto in
order that conspicuous attention may bo
drawn to what is regarded by Nicaragua
as an Invasion of tho Monroo doctrlno.
Nicaragua's hones now aro almost entlroly
centered on Washington It Is not be
lieved, howover, that Dr. Guzman has suo
cecdod as yot In ollcitlng tho Intervention
of tho United States.
Corlnto Is tho heavlost Import point in
Nicaragua. Tho Imports thoro for 1891-03
wore $8,000,805, whllo all Imports to other
points did not oxcoed $500,000. It is ovl
dent from this why tho British chose Cor
lnto for their stroke. Almost ouo-balf of
tho Imports at Corlnto aro from Great
Britain, so that tho British solzuro of the
custom houses will result In their reeelv
lncr tho customs duos from British mer
chant ships.
Tho British Imports for 1891-03 were
$2,133,001; thosoof tho United States camo
second, at $1,407,050; Germany, l,04a,()j5;
Franco, $993,141. Tho rost of tho Import
trado was with neighboring South and
Central American, countries As tho
Corlnto Imports averago ubout $500,009
monthly It would not take lonn for Great
Britain to appropriate tho $io,UUO Indem
nity demanded.
