Two More Fugitives Eeturned to
the Mattewan Asylum,
PERRY AND DAVIS STILL AT LARGE
The Noted Trnih Ilobber la Supplied With
Citizen's Clothing l'ntrlck McGulre and
Michael O'Donnell Ovortakeu at l'llio
Flnlns by Keeper Coylo, of tho Asylum.
Mattewan, N. Y., April is! Patrick
McGulro and Michael 0'Donneli,two of tho
flvo convicts who esenpod from the Matto-
wnu asylum Inst Wednesday night, wore
captured at Pine Plains yesterday by At
tendant James Coyle, of tho asylum. This
leaves only Pony, for whoso arrest a ro-,
ward of ?2,250 Is offered, and Davis, who
is said to be ovon moro desporato and dar
ing tnnn tho lormor, still at liberty.
Whon Superintendent Allison loarncd
that Porry had brokon into a Iioubo at
Hughsonvlllo on Thursday night and
stolon a quantity of wearing apparel he
at once dlspatchod attendants to all points
north of hero, thinking tho train robber,
and perhaps also hlsnals. had cone in that
direction. Attendant Jamos Coylo, who,
with two othor attendants, had boon at
Uan bury, was told to procoed at onco to
Pino Plains, which is forty miles north
east of this place. Coylo arrived at Pino
Plains Saturday night, and stopped at tho
hotel. Yesterday morning ho wont to tho
station and was about to buy a morning
paper from a newsboy when ho chanced to
look down tho truck and saw a man's
head protruding from an ompty hay car
about fifty yards from whero ho stood.
Tho head disappeared, but not boforo
Coylo recognized tho man as O'Donnell.
Going to tho open car door ho flrcd a
shot from his rovolvcr at random into tho
car. As ho did so another man, whom ho
rccognizedns McGulroJumpedout through
tho opposite doorway. Coylo then leaped
Into tho car and arrested O'Donnoll, who
was crouching In a cornor, too broken
down to offer resistance. Coylo pulled tho
convict out of tho car and took him
into tho stutiou, leaving him in the cus
tody of two boys, while ho started down
tho railroad track in pursuit of McGuiro.
who had by this tlmo got quite a start of
him.
Coylo gained on tho tired convict for
about half a mile, mid thon flrcd anothor
shot. As ho rounded a curvo tho fugltlvo
took to tho woods, which border tho track
on both sides. Tho pistol shot had at
tracted a crowd of boys, who joined in tho
chaso, and soma of thorn suw McGulro go
into the woods and told Coyle. Thokoopor
scoured the woods for fifteen minutes bo
foro ho saw McGulro again. Then tho con
vict wus standing in an open field on tho
border of the wood in a doflant attitudo.
Coyle started toward him, firing u third
shot.
'If you take me you'll havo to tako mo
dead," McGulro yolled defiantly.
I ll do that," replied Coylo, "coming
closor to McGuiro, who, seeing that cap
ture was inevitable, lay down in the fluid
nnd said: "well, you'll havo to carry mo,
anyway."
Coylo talked to him for n tlmo, and
finally porsuadod him to go peaceably to
the station. Uoylo thon tolographod to tho
asylum that he had caught O'Donnoll and
JNlcbulre, and Attendants MaoDonald and
Lacey went to Pino Plains and uldod in
bringing the prisoners back to tho asylum.
ur. Allison had AlcUulre and O Donnoll
placed in separate rooms, andhe oxamlned
each ouo at great length, after which he
repeated to tho Associated Pross roporter
what ho una been ublo to learn from thorn.
It appears that as the asylum Is a now in
stitution, and not occupied throughout, a
number of patients havo boon employed
irom tlmo to tlmo in unlshing tho various
wards. Some months ago a number of
patients were cmplhyod in scraping tho
uoor ot tno south isolation ward, which
was thon entirely unoccupied.
From McGulre it is learned that the
fashioning of the koys which freed tho
men from their cells was bogun at that
tlmo by somo patlont employed on tho im
provement. Whon McGuiro was trans
ferred to the south Isolation ward, togothor
with other patlonts, ho ulsooverod thoso
keys, togethor with a pair of small flat
filos, about four inches long. Tho partially
filed keys, which had originally been
spoons, wero taken possession of by Mc
Gulro, who has worked for tho past six or
oight months, having thorn tried in the
locks from tlmo to tlmo by ono of tho
patients who had tho run of tho ward.
Somo tlmo ago McUulro, who Is a Jowelor
by trado, and who is thoroughly con vorsaut
with tho manufacture of such artlclos,
broko open tho watchman's bos which
connects with tho clock in tho main offlco
and secured a thin piece of stool two in
chos long and a quarter on an lnoh wide,
With his file ho mado teeth in this stool.
giving him a fluo saw, with which he was
enabled to saw out tno wire screen over
tho door when tho time for escape came.
Tho keys and tools woro secreted behind
tho sinks when McGulre was not at work
on them.
Tho file and saw woro found on Me
Gulrowhen arrested.
McGulre says that ho and O'Donnell
havo been togothor ovor since they left the
asylum. They slid down from tho south
sldo of the roof, whlio Porry and tho others
left tho roof from tho opposite side. Mc-
liuiro saw nothing moro of them after
that. They have committed no robberies,
McGuiro says, oxcoptto steal onooldblaok
coat for himself and a drab ulster for
O'Donnoll, which they found In a barn
beside tho railroad track.
The iirlsonors woro In bad condition
physically from oxposuru audhungor, and
seemed relieved whon they woro allowed
to throw themsolvos on the cots in their
colls and woro given nourishment.
