During tho two hours' stoppneo of the
steamer at Key West 'tho Havnilai passon
gers learned of tho bellof among Key West
sympathizers that a plan was afoot to ns
sasslnato Martinez Campos on his arrival
at Havana. This plan was being matured
on tho assumption that Campos will laud'
at Havana on his arrival, about the 15thi
Inst. Ho will not do so, however, as ho
will first touch. Puerto Rico. A full state
ment of tho affairs on tho Island of Cuba
will bo sout to Puerto Rico bv covornment-
officials, who will await Campos, and from'
tnis no will dotermino ot what point In
Cuba ho will land. Ho will probably dls
embark at Salitlago do Cuba, where ho
will establish headquarters and bogln his
campaign.
Among tho arrived passengers Is n mer
chant of Haytl, who dlsombarked at San
tiago do Cuba, whero ho remained two
days. Ho saw much of the Spanish troops
camped and arriving at Santiago. He states
that thoy aro mostly wretched appearing,
many being boys, somo scarcely able to
carry guns. This merchant says that whllo
ho was thoro It was reported that tho rebels
wero about to nttnek tho outskirts of tho
town, aud a thousand nowly arrived Span
ish troops woro lod out to meot tho rebels.
Tho oncountcr occurred noar tho city, and
only 680 of tho 1,000 troops returned thcre
from, 830 bolng killed, wounded or cap
tured by tho robols.
No nows of this engagement had been
given out by tho Havana authorities up to
Saturday last, nor was it referred to by ar
riving Insurrectionists. A Cuban from
tho eastern end of tho island who Is In
closo touch with occurrences In the dis
turbed districts and who is advised of tho
plans of tho rebel leaders, in whoso behalf
ho journeys, states that Macco and his
party is much larger than Is bellovcd. Ho
says tho schoonor Honora, which landed
tho party, was flllod with arms and am
munitions. Cubans mako tho statomont
that Macoo and his party landed on March
87. instead of March 81. as clvou out bv
tho government officials at Havana. Cap-
tain Forlquito Perez has jolnod tho Cuban
causo. Ho is n nephow of the Spanish
general known n tho tigor.
It is further statod by tho informant
that Maceo, who sailed In a steamer from
Colou to Fortuno Island, had been thoro
two or threo weoks before landing In
Cuba, "awaiting tho schooner Honora,
which had received 84,000, prepaid, for tho
undertaking. Tho Informant therefore
denounces tho government announcement
that tho captain of tho Honora was killed
by the rebels to oscapo tho payraont as an
effort to deter other captains from under
taking a like sorvlco. Threo hundred Span
ish troops endeavored to prevent Macoo's
landing, but his comrades wero numerous
enough to withstand tho troops.
From a rebel emissary who has arrived
hero tho plan of apportionment of most of
the notable robol loadors Is stated thus:
Chief Antonio Macco wlil proacad. to the
provlnco of Santiago, Rafaol Roderijiiet
to Camaguey, ot which Puerto Principe
Is tho capital, tind Maximo Gomez, when
he arrives from Santo Domingo, if ho has
not already done so, will rally tho robels
at Las Villas. It is expected that various
sectloris will rlso on the arrival of these
loader's,
A creneral centralization and contest
will follow. Tho fight will not occur until
tho rains and fever como to nld tho robol
arms. This authority states that between
7,000 and 8,000 robols are with arms now.

Yesterday afternoon Clarke met Jones

his faco. Whon I did this, ho loosed my
arm and mado for his pistol. I then saw
that my only chanco was to knock him
down, and I struck with all my might at
his faco with my loft hand. Ho sprang
back toward tho door, and my blow failed
to roach him. Ho was still reaching for
his postol. I sprang forward, grappled him
and caught him around tho waist, pressing
both arms tp his sldo, but leavlnghls arms

"Just then Ropresentativo Popo also got

tho governor said; 'D n you, Roberts,

and Popo declined. I then said: 'Glvomo
