CoitODODA, Moxlco.March 11. Tho peak
of Orlznba, the anotent volcano, Is In n
stnto of eruption. Tho signs of disturb,
anco bogan to manifest themselves on
Sunday night of last week, anil have In
creased In forco constantly slnco that time.
It Is now vomiting poisonous gasos, and
thlok volumes of smoko are omitted from
100 apertures In Its great maw. Tho earth
for 100 miles around has shaken periodi
cally with subterranean vibrations. A
great alarm exists among the dwollors In
tho cltlos of Corodoba. Orizaba, Kalaho
and tho dozens of small villages scattered
withlu tho scopo of tho strango and Inter
esting phenomenon.
Tho shocks as yet havo not boon of a dis
astrous nature, and no damage from them
has been reported. Tho rim of tho crater
glows Hko flro, and tho thick gases rolling
down tho mountain sldos havo sot aflame
tho grasses and vegetation clothing tho
sides of tho summit, which adds to the
density of tho smoko and tho grandeur of
tho spectacle.
l or tho public safety tho governor or the
stnto of Vera Ortiz will shortly namo 0
commission of scientists to mako all tho
investigation into tho eruption posslblo,
and to mako recommctulatious looking to
tho protection of tho Inhabitants of the
neighboring villages.
Tho present eruption Is in tho hoart of
tho b03t Improved coiteo district in Mox
lco, where there aro located many Ameri
cans who have embarked In tho profitable
business. Tho colleo plantations aro not
as yet thought to bo hi any danger of dam
age, jior will thoy bo unless tho fall of
thick ashes occurs, which is not consid
ered probable Masses aro being said in
all tho churchos of tho locality to ward off
tho impending danger.
Coming soon after tho lato destructive
volcanic activities in many parts of tho re
public, the eruption of Orizaba has many
terrors, not only to thu peoplo of its vicin
ity, but to all living in tho volcanic bolt
strotchlng from tho active volcano of Co
llma, on tho west coast, clear to tho Gulf
of Mexico on tho cast. Within this bolt
aro numbered dozous of old craters, either
in reposo or smoking constantly. It is
natural to supposo that should its erup
tions continue tho othor volcanoos will be
affected and a goneral earthquake, poriod
sot in. Tho consequonccs of such a catas
tropho aro hard to forotoll.but could hardly
bo anything less than very disastrous to
