testified to having paid Harry Ilayward
between ffl.OOO and $7,000 after Sept. 1,

testimony simply bore on tho question of

Harry's alibi. Mrs. Hayward said Harry

was going out to make a call. About7:40

hair and wont out, saying that ho was go
ing to tho opera. Tho twenty minutes bo

for it was In that tlmo. according to
Bllxt's testimony, that Harry put him in
the buggy with Miss Ging, with instruc
tions to drive away and kill her.

Mrs. Hayward again took tho stand, but
owing to tho numerous objections entered
by tho state, nothing material was dovol'
oped.
W. W. Hayward, tho father of tho boys,
was tho next witness. Tho witness do
nled some of Bllxt's statements, but as a
material Impeachment tho testimony was
a failure. In regard to Adry's evidence,
tho witness denied that on Nov. 24 ho was
sent by Harry to tho flats to show people
rooms. Witness stated that ho was In Ills
offlco tho morning of Nov. 30. Harry was
thoro awhile, for half nu hour perhaps.
Adry Was there for a short tlmo. They
wero not thoro alono that morning. This
Is tho time when Adry stated that Harry
and ho had tho exciting intcrviow in refcr
enco to tho proposed killing of tho woman.
Tho witnoss corroborated lTliwiToln tl'iat
portion of her testimony whoro sho said
Adry was violent on Oct. 7, and called his
mother names which reflected upon hor
character. In telling of tho occurrences,
tho old gentleman broko down and sobbed,
and the proceedings were delayed somo
tlmo waiting for him to compose himself.

from sympathy.

Washington, Feb. 21. Mr. P. Bogda
noff, first secretary of the Bussian lega
tion, killed himself yestorday by shooting
himself in tho head at his boarding house.
Ho had boon sick for two or threo weeks,
and hU sulcldo is supposed to bo attrib
uted to tho suffering ho had undergone.
Ho served in tho Russian diplomatic ser
vico in Scrvia for eight years, thou in Bul
garia for two years, and then in Brazil.
Ho was next transferred to Washington,
and camo hero nbout two months ngo as
first secretary of tho legation. It is said
that ho was a man of means and not de
pendent on tho salary of his office.
Uprising Feared in Ug-ypt.
CAino, Egypt, Fob. 21. Tho menacing
aspect of affairs in Alexandria continues
to occupy publio nttention. Representa
tions havo boon mado on behalf of tho
German community in that city. A pri
vate letter states that threats of vengeance
aro freely uttered. All symptoms vividly
recall thoso that heralded tho massacres In
1882. For somo time past ono of tho khe
dlvo's proteges, whose patriotism has boon
stimulated by dismissal from the govern
ment sorvico for peculation, has boon busy
among tho Bedouins distributing khedival
largesso and recruiting a body guard for
tho khedlve's person.

For eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
Delaware, District of Columbia and Vir
ginia, folr; slightly wormer; south to
southwest winds. A second storm ap
pears to be developing off the Atlantic
coast. The temperature has fallen in
Florida, on the middle and north Atlantio
coast and in tho northwest, and has gen
erally risen elsewhere.

Dr. Hooze's Concessional Contest.
BALTIMORE, Fob. 21. Tho recounted
ballots in the contested election caso of
Dr. William Boozo against Congressman
Harry .Wollos Busk was completed yester
day. Tho Republican candidate, accord
ing to his counsel, has gained about SOS
on the recount. Tho counsel for Mr. Husk
will not admit half this gain. Mr. Busk's
plurality was r19, and according to tho re
count ho got more votes than Dr. Boozo.
As the recount does not glvo Dr. Booze
enough votes to elect him ho will have to
rest his caso upon claims and proof of
frauds. Tho caso will go boforo a con
gressional committee of the next congress,
ana thero tho roal battle will bo fought.
A Dissipated Stan's Crime.
PEKIN, Ills., Feb. 21. Albert Wallace, a
dissipated, reckless young man living
with his sister and her husband. Q. B.
Bolby, twolvo miles southeast, shot his
slstor,;her husband and a boy living with
tho family. Tho wounds Inflicted aro
thought to bo fatal in tho caso of tho hus
band, who Is shot through tho head. Tho
troublo loading up to tho tragedy Is of
long duration, growing out of tho disin
heritance of Wallace by his father, who
was Killed in 1890, In favor of Mrs. Bolby.
Tho murderer surrendered.

Brooklyn, Fob. 21. Tho chnrges of
wilful neglect of duty in connection with
cases of violations of law arising out
of tho trolley strike, preferred by Mayor
Schloron against Police Justico William
Watson, woro dismissed by the general
term of the supremo court. Tho court held
that while several of tho decisions of tho
justico were opon to consuro, thoy did not
constltuto ground for romovnl from office,
as thoy did not show Intentional violation
of duty or disregard of legal rulos.
murdered Her Drutnl Father.
Charleston, W. Vn., Feb. 21. Cordelia
Hill, residing nt Rlppon, six miles south
of this city, shot and instantly killed hor
father, Robert Hill. Tho father was un
mercifully chastising ono of his sons, who
toro nway from him and ran to tho mother
for protection. Tho father then assaulted
and boat tho mother. Tho daughter ran
In with a rovolver, placed it near tho back
of her father's head and fired. Death was
instantaneous. Tho child was arrested
and indicted for murder.
London's (jlrcat Demand for Our Loan.
London, Feb. 31. Tho Dally News, in
its financial articles this morning, says:
'The one only event in tho city yesterday
was tho issue of tho American loan. Wo
have reason to bcliovo that, irrespective of
any application from tho provinces, tho
loan was covered In London alone nearly
fifteen times. Considering tho hugo num
ber of applications, involving tho tempor
ary lock up of over 1,000,000, It is not sur
prising that money has been scarce
Suicide Knds the Honeymoon.
LUKAY, Va., Feb. 21. Mrs. Lavlnia
Bohannon, daughter of William A. Harris,
congressman-iit-large from Kansas, who
eloped from Kansas with Air. Bohannon,
liveryman of this place, last August,
committed suicide at her home hero by
taking poison. A letter In a drawer said:
This is my own work; 1 did it myselt."
Tho letter also stated that no blame was
in any way attached to hor husband, who
had always been devoted to her.

congress at an early day, in order to lot it

Mr. Jonos (Ark.) in charge of tho measure,

no further offort to pass It at tho present
session. Tho disposal of tho measure was
emphasized by tho decisivo voto of 55 to 12
on Mr. Gorman's motion to tako up tho
Indian appropriation bill, tho effect of
which was to displace tho sliver bill and
send it back to tlio calendar. Mr. Wal
cott's resolution declaratory for silver, but

The opponents of tho new battleships
suffered a crushing defeat yesterday when
Mr. Slivers' motion to striko out tho au
thorization for tho war vessels was lost
in tho iiouso by a voto of 07 to 109. Mr.
Dolllvcr (la.) succeeded in having an
nmondmont adopted providing for tho
building of two torpedo boats on tho Mis
slsslppl river. Tho naval bill, as passed,
authorizes tho construction of threo battle
ships, to cost, exelusivo of armor, $1,000,000
each, and twelvo torpedo boats to cost
$170,000 each.
Drutal Wife Murder lu New Vork.
New Yohk, Fob. 20. A brutal murdor
was committed in a roar tenement at 55
Baxter street, just In the coutcr of tho
lowest portion of tho city, and Vlncenzo
Nino, a barber, cut his wlfo's throat from
car to ear in tho presenco of their two chil
dren. Ho declares that ho committed tho
deed because his wife's lover had tried to
Induce hor to kill him nnd run away. Tho
friends of tho dead woman soy tho deed
was provoked by her refusal to support
hor husband, Nino was arrested and tho
two children turned over to tho care of tho
Gerry society.

partment has recolved an account of tho
funeral of tho inte united states Minister
Gray In tho City of Mexico In a tolegrnm
from our charge, Mr. Butler. Mr. Marls
cal, Mexico's foreign minister, assured
Consul General Crittenden and Mr. But
ler that Minister Gray had received the
highest military honors over accorded to a

Atlantic City, Feb. 20. The Star Pas
tel company, of tills city, has been de
clared to bo a fraudulent concern oy tnc

Postmaster Sayre seized tlio company's
