SEATTLE. Wash., Dee. 10. Flro broko
out In the Oregon Improvement company's
New Castle coal iiiiuo at Coal Creek,
ten miles from this city. Over 125 men
were working in tho mine at tho tlmo,
but they wero got out safely, though just
in tho nick of time. Coal creek was
dammed aud turned into tho mine. Tho
loss will amount to $50,000.

ward, Harry's father, today declared that
both of his sons would bo cleared, that
Hllxt was confessedly a notorious liar, aud
that his various confessions would havo
no weight. Ho added that tho ovldcneo
was that Hllxt was iu tho power of a gang,
and committed tho crlmo under their dic
tation, with tho understanding that If dis
covered It should be ascribed to Harry
Hnyward. This gang, ho added, was not
composed of Minneapolis people. Mr.
Hnyward refused to account for the be
havior of Adrian, tho older brother, say
ing it would bo explained later.
Mrs. Llaus A. Hllxt yesterday made a
long aud succicnt statement to R. R.
O Doll, her husband's attorney, tho pur
port of which was that sho bad long known
of tho Immense influence exerted over her
husband by Harry Hayward. Sho had
tried iu vain to counteract it. Hllxt said
several times that Hnyward would bo tho
death of him, nnd flint ho dared not to dis
obey him. Just before tho crlmo Hllxt
wont around llko n man In a dream. It
was hard to attract Ids attention nnd his
memory becnnio defective Hayward Im
pressed on Hllxt what ho had to do many
times a day, and kept the idea of tho crlmo
constantly before him, according to tho
wife's statement.
This ovldenco Is to bo used in connection
with that of Ullxt's father and brother to
show that the man was of a temperament
most susceptible to an iullucnco that ap
proached the hypnotic- In its character. It
is a question as to whether tho court will
permit testimony of a hypnotic character,
but tho defenso will mnko a strong euort
to show at least that Hllxt was not a free
moral agent when ho committed the crime.
This lino of defense will mnko the trial a
most novel ono in criminal annals.

pension fraud conspirators was disposed of
yesterday afternoon In a few minutes.
Tho case of Dr. Kessel, of Cresco, Indicted
with VauLeuv, was called, but did not
como to trial, tho defendant pleading
guilty to tho charges made in tho three
Indictments. Judgo Shiras sentenced hlni
to eighteen months Imprisonment and to
pay a lino of $1,000 and costs in cncli case.
Tho sentence of Imprisonment was then
suspended aud the defendant paid tho flues
aud was discharged.

hns been issued to arrest Kung, the tao
tal of Port Arthur, and tho four Chlncso
generals who wero in command at Port
Arthur, and to send them to Pekin for
trial and punishment for tho loss of that
important dockyard nnd fortress. Ad
miral Ting, who, by tho way, was In com
mand at tho disastrous naval engagement
off the Yalu river, has been arrested for
falling to defend tho dockyard of Port Ar
thur against tho Japaneso forces.

john, but tho men werj reluctant to tasto
them. Tho daring llroman is said to havo
taken a swallow just to test tho matter.
Soon nfter ho was suspended by his enp
tulu for appearing to bo a "llttlo groggy."
A Mother's Awful Deed.
Cassville. Mo., Deo. 111. At Dry Hol
low, eight miles south of this place, dur
ing a lit of despondency, Mrs. William
Jones cut tho throats of her 5 nnd 7-ycar-old
children with a razor, and then com
mitted suicide In tho samo manner. Two
older children and a baby wero not harmed.
