Miss Glng, wlio hail connections In Au
burn, X. Y., whore her reputation is tho
very best, brid lntm in this city somo Mine,
niul luul worked up a lucrative business ns
n dressnuiki r. Sho hnd boon known to
enrry lnrgo Bums of money on her person
on several ocohbIoiis of Into. Ono of tho
most Important fncts yet learned Is thnt
Miss Glng tlrow 7,000 from n snfO deposit
vault Monday, and no trace of this money
can bo found. This strengthens tho theory
that sho was killed for money. Others
think It to bo a lovo affair, and that tho
murder was prompted by jealousy.
A young man named Harry T Hayward,
who Was said to havo had business deal
ings with tho murdered woman, was ex
amined by tho pollco in a most vigorous
manner for hoveral hours. Ho admitted
having had dealings with Miss Glng, and
said ho had loaned her at various times
largo sums of money. Ho held her per
sonal notes ior ?G,000, and stated thnt sho
luul not lonjr ago taken out an accident
policy of fo.OUO, which was assigned to
hhn.
Ono of tho first things which tho pollco
learned was that lately several notes had
been sunt to Miss Glng by a man who al
ways summoned a messenger from tho
Nicollet House, and that sho received ono
of the notes on Monday. Tho messenger
was located, nud upon visiting Mies Glug's
rooms pointed out the picture of Harvey
Axford, local manngur for nn eastern
clothing llrm, as thitt of tho man who luul
sent tho notes; but when Axford's wlfo
proved that she had given Miss Glng Ax
ford's photograph Mr. Axford wus dis
missed. It Is known that Miss Glng had a com
panion during her rldo of Monday night.
It Is certain that this companion was be
yond the iieradventuro of a doubt her
murderer, but thus far thero is scarcely
the shadow of a clew to his identity. But
ono man has turned up who over saw tho
murderer. This is a mounted officer, Get
chell, and his was only a lleetlug glimpse
of the faco in tho moonlight. Tho officer
was making ids rounds on Lako street,
near Portland avenue, about 8 o'clock
Monday evening. A carriage passed him
in which tho occupants were loudly quar
reling, llu glanced at tho man and saw
that ho was thin of faco and had a heavy
dark mustache. Ho claims that ho looked
at tho rig as It passed sharply, and posi
tively identified it ns tho Goosman rig
which Miss Glng hired, and which camo
back to tho stable empty and blood soaked.
Interviews with Miss Glng's financial
agents, G. L. Jones' Sous, revoal tho facts
that sho has been in pressing need of
money, for which somo ono was pushing
her within tho last six weeks. Her agents
had loaned out Sl,300, but she suddenly do
elded to call her loans. It was not found
easy to transfer them, and Miss Glng bo-
camo quite impatient for tho money, say
ing sho only needed It for thirty days.
Finally tho matter was arranged, aud sho
drow out nbout $1,000.
The head waiter in Barge's restaurant
tells of Miss Glng and Hayvvaill mooting
thero as late us Saturday, on which occa
sion Miss Ging showed nearly 2,000 in
bank bills.
It ha1 been ascertained, too, that Miss
Glng had nearly completed her arrange
ments for opening a largo millinery estab
lishment on Nicolas avenuo, and had
opened negotiations with tho ngeut of a
store property to that end. This would
explain her need for reai'y money, as sho
was anxious to purchase stock and open
for tho holiday trade.
Cashed llogus Warrants.
CHICAGO, Dec. 0. C. K. Kimball & Co.,
It. D. Kelly and other brokers, who havo
been doing a thriving busluosa in shaving
election j udges and clerks' warrants, havo
discovered that they havo been defrauded
of a largo amount through bogus war
rants. About 5,000 judges and clerks
served nt tho recent election, receiving
warrants for from il3 to ?15. Many cashed
thorn at a discount with various brokers.
Vhou tho warrants wero prosentod to tho
comptroller yesterday it was found thnt a
uuuibor of bogus ones had boon cashed.
The amount of tho brokers' lossos Is not
known, but it will probably bo largo.

I'lntto, In Nebraska, northward to tho

ground for buffaloes In tho whole north
west. Tho country was moro or loss hos
tile in thoso dnys, and the Indians, who
had been tho best guardians of tho bison
until whllo pot hun tors camo among thorn,
soon gained the civilized Idea of slaughter,
nud from that tlmo tho doom uf tho repro
sontntlvo American gamo animal wns kbi
tlvely assured, but the grontest blow dealt
tho bison herds of tho northwest was the
completion of tho Nortliorn l'nolflo track
west from Bismarck to tho Kooky moun
tains. Tho road prnctlonlly divided the
herds (for the bison will novor, unloss
forced, cross the Iron of n rnllrond track),
and thoso to tho south wero soon swal
lowed up In the general slaughter waged
by Indians, pot, hldo and tonguo hunters,
foreign sportsmen and others who wero
out to kill anything they saw on sight.
This wns during the winter of 1882-3
The buffaloes to tho north wero In ninny
scattcrod bauds, but thero was ono great
herd of not loss than 76,000 head, which
had found n temporary rcfugo In tho tri
angle formed by the Musselshell, Missouri
nnd Yellowstono rivers in Montana, nnd
as yet they had not been "smollod out"
by olther red or whlto hunters, but they
wero ns surely doomed ns though nl ready
killed, for tho railroad Iron cut them off
from their southern range, nnd tho In
dians of tho Canadian northwest ns well
ns thoso of our own country barred theli
retreat Into tho far north, and so they weir
hemmed In betweon tho two, with no pos
slblllty of cscnpo In cither direction.
To Illustrate In a few words tho remark
ablo destruction of that section nlono It
will only bo necossnry to say that this last
great hord was completely wiped out of
oxlstonco In less than four months, and
beforo tho close of tho year thero wero but
a few singles nnd pairs left as fugitives In
that vast country, whore, but a yonr or
two boforo, thoy could have boon counted
almost by the hundreds of thoumnds. The
shipping figures from two points on tho
Yellowstono at thoondof the season, Glen-'
dlvo and Miles City, show 800,000 buffalo
hides sent from tho former and 185,250
skins of oik, nntclopo and door from tho
latter place.
It chanced, nt the tlmo mentioned, thnt
tho writer, with a email detachment of
soldiers, was pnsslng from tho Missouri
river country to tho Yellowstono, and wo
enmoacross, nlmostdnlly, numerous bands
of Gros Ventre, I'lecan, Blnckfeet and
other Indians, all hurrying to tho slaugh
ter of tho noblo nnininls oa tho Mussel
shell. Our 6cout, or guide, wns n Crow
Indian named Two Moons, nnd ono day
whllo throadlng our way through Bad
Lands, painted buttes nnd broken coullos
a smnll herd of nbout 000 bison camo rush
ing Into view around n bluff not more
than 200 yards distant, and with heads
down and pnlntbrusl) tnlls erect they
camo plunging on directly toward us In
tho wildest fort of confusion. A gonulno
stnmpcdo was probably in full operation,
and tho soldiers, not waiting for orders,
lost no tlmo In placing n safe nnd reasona
ble, dlstanco betweon themselves nnd tho
threatened danger. They quickly shied
oil to tho right, nnd I felt It my duty at
this "impending crisis" to keopns closo to
tho heels of my lipping comrades as tho
6pecd of my horso would permit.
In n few mlnutos tho Inst of tho fleolng
bison wero well to tho rear, and thoy soon
disappeared beyond a neighboring knoll
with tho spocd of an express train. Whllo
watching thciannd debating whothcr a
chaso would bo worth tho trouble, from bo
hlnd Uio bluff whero tho buffaloes had
first appeared now camo a 6ccond band of
bison, about 00 In nil, with u dozen well
mounted Cheyenno bucks In hot pursuit.
As boforo, tho nnlmnls camo direct toward
us, but our shoutings nnd hnlloolugs
turned them nsld, and thoy shied off to
tho loft, entering tho jaws of n rough,
brokon ravine, which was precisely what
their red pursuers wanted. The ravino
was n sort of rift In tho Bad Lnnds which
practically led nowhere, but which wo nft
crwnrd discovered narrowed and closed In
until It ended In n steep, lnipassablo pock
et, with no outlet except by tho original
way of entry.
Tho Indlnns shouted to us as thoy rushed
by, and, rnther Interested In tho outcomo,
as I suspected tho nature of tho ravine, I
left tho sergeant with tho detachment,
and, taking tho guide with me, followed
swiftly on tho heols of tho flying Choy
ennos. Gamo and hunters soon disappeared in
tho twlnlngs nnd Intertwining of tho
gorge, nnd ns It wns an exceedingly rocky
nnd difficult trail wo took our tlmo nud
practically "made hasto slowly." How
tho red men nhead of us over got over tho
ground fao quickly was an unsolved mys
tery. Nnrrowor and narrower becaino tho
gorgo, and ot last wo paused to listen.
There was scarcely a sound In tho air, but
this Intense stillness became suddenly
broken by a series of rapid shots nnd wile
yells, nccompanlcd by a thundorlng, ruin
tiling noise, which was almost deafening.
Tho tumult rapidly grow louder, and thon,
just in front of us, from out tho depths of
tho canyon camo tho buffalo herd like tho
wind, directly toward us. Somo wore
bleeding, many wero woundod, nnd others
wero limping badly. It never seemed pos
Elblo that living brutes could travel over
such rough ground with such speed, but
tho difficulties of tho trail never seemed to
concern them In the least, for, as a matter
of fnct, tho rear ones crowded tho forward
ones with such persistonoo nnd so rapidly
that they hnd to movo quickly or elso bo
trampled undor foot.
After this thundercloud hud passed,
with focllugs of great relief, wo wont on
up tho canyon to see how tho Indians had
fared. It proved to havo been a disastrous
encounter for the Choyennos, as many of
thorn wero limping and bleeding as badly
as tho stampeded buffaloes. A survey of
tho freo frontier clrous ground discovered
suvcu dead buffaloes, three wounded In
dians ono ot them quite seriously and
six ponies killed and maimed, Chicago
