turn by tho minmuicoiucnt from an oillclnl
sonroo tlint tho body of Perry, or lHtczol,
will ngnln bo exhumed nnd another effort
inado to Identify It.
It will bo remembered by those who
havo followed tho history of this extra
ordinary enso that Mrs. I'ltezel nover snw
tho (lead body of tho man who wns said to
bo her husband. Tho Identification wns
mode by her daughter, and it was staled
that within tho last few days tho datichteri
hnd expressed her doubts as to tho conjf
cluslvencss of tho Identifying marks. j
bn tlint nil doubt In this connection m.y
bo removed, tho hitclllireneo comes fr'n
an authoritative source that tho body will
bo ro-exJiumed so that Mrs. I'ltezol may
bo given all the facilities posslblo fordo
tcnnlnlng whether or not It Is the body of
hor husband. Tho body is burled In Me
chanics' cemetery.
Yostordny Holmes and Mrs. i'ltezel were
committed to Moyamenslng prison, thero
to await trial. Secretary Urew, of tho bo-
clety for tho Prevention of Cruelty to
Children, volunteered to take caro ol tno
18-year-old daughter and the l-yenr-oiu
baby, but Mrs. I'ltezel objected to having
hor baby taken from her. Dr. Andrews
expressed tho opinion that the mother's
physical condition would not permit her
to caro for tho baby unassisted, and it was
finally arranged that tho children should
accompany her.
Lawyer Harry Hawkins has been re
tained to defend Holmes, tho money being
furnished by a mysterious friend from
Chicago. To Hawkins Holmes earnestly
dec'ored that ho hm' never been guilty of
murder. Lawyer Hawkins says that
Holmes complains bitterly of the spiriting
away of his wife. He hns not been per
mitted to sec her since he was locked up
at the Central station, nnd ho does not
know where she is. It Is the Intention of
tho lawyer to go into court and apply for
a writ of habeas corpus, nnd demand that
Mrs. Holmes be produced.
Holmes has retracted many of the state
ments made or alleged to have been made
to a detective when coming to this city
from Boston. Ho doolarod that both the
Williams girls are allru, and that Anna
was recently paid $1,000 by Pltozal la Now
York city. The story of hor murder and
numerous other crimes with which his
name was linked he characterized as
"rot," Invented to throw the detectlTes off
tho scent.
There was a new development yesterday
when it was learned that the detectives
are looking for an expressmnn who hud
been seen with Pltczel and who dlnap
peared about tho time tho body was found.
Tho theory Is that either hohad something
to do with hauling tho body or that ho
himself was murdered.
Holmes' lawyers state that they will
show by doouments on record that at
tho time of the alleged Identification of
I'ltezel that shadowy lndlvlduul was per
sonally conducting a real estate transac
tion in this city.

CniCAGO, Nov. 24. Tho Chicago police
havo obtained a clew regarding liuujamln
Y. Pitezcl, tho accomplice of H.H. Holmes
alias Howard, who Is now detained at
Philadelphia on charges of having swin
dled an insurance company out of f 10,000.
This amount was placed on Pltezcl's llfo,
and on Sept. a last a body supposed to have
been his was found In Philadelphia. Plto-
rel had lived up to May 1 lust on Madison
avenue near Sixty-third street. It was
found that Pltczel had vaoated his apart
monts on May 1 and removed tho furni
ture to 497 Sixty-third street. On or ubout
Aug. 1 last he was In the city ostensibly
to make arrangements regarding the re
moval of his household effects to St. Louis,
whero he Intended making his home for
the winter.
A letter was received from Pitezel from
St. Louis In which ho promised to soon
clear the standing indebtedness on UU
furniture nnd effect its removal. Four
lotters have been written to Pitezel at St.
Louis, and none have been returned, dt
spite tho fact that the precaution was
taken to placo the writer's address, with
the usual request for return, on the out
lido of each envelope. This, the police
think, shows that if Pitezel himself is not
alive and living at St. Louis some one is
representing him thero who knows every
detail connected with his business trans
action. The handwriting of tho St. Louis
letter corresponds with that of tho one
mailed at Philadelphia by Pitozel. Tho
police bellovo they aro on tho track of tho
allegod dead man.

doflnlte thnn last week. Tho liirxt in'

Improve, but tho prevailing hopefulness e
felt In somewhat larger transactions.
Tho wheat mnrket has lost this wtvl;
the cent It gained last week, viostern n--celpts
being larger and Atlantic exports
aro also laraor, 5(17,711 bushels against
70.'i,020 last year, but these aro of small ac
count compared with tho great vlslblesui
ply. Foroigu reports this week havo been
rather more promising, though the fact
remains that the world's crop outside tho
United States Is probably tho largest ever
grown. Corn has declined Vi cents, rn
ceipts having much Increased. The for
eign demand for cotton continues large,
exports being 50,000 bales larger than for
the sumo week last year, but receipts also
contlnuo greuter than a year ago.
Textilo industries have added a fow fac
tories to tho working list and only one or
two withdrawn, and there lias been some
Improvement In tho demand for woolens.
More supplementary orders for spring
havo been received, and colder weather
has Increased tho demand for heavy goods.
Yet, on tho whole, tho market Is not ac
tive, and tho manufacture is much below
the capacity of tho works.
Tho Iron Industry again records lower
prices for Bessemer iron, $10.10 at Pitts
burg, and for some manufactured pro
ducts. The consumption is large, and for
tho season fairly well maintained, but as
it is not equal to tho capacity of works in
operation, their struggle to get business
keeps prices at tho bottom. It is reported
that au American ship yard has secured
orders to build three armorod cruisers for
Russia, which will glvo added work for
some years, and that a contract for 10,000
tons cast pipe for Toklo will probably bo
secured by a southern concern.
The failures this week havo been 322 in
the Unltod States, against 385 for the samo
week last year, and 31 in Canada, against
84 last year.
Brudstreets review says: The features
of general trade for tho week include an
Increase In distribution of holiday goods,
of heavy clothing, hats, seasonable dry
goods, and at various points hardware and
shoes. At the south a favorable Influence
is a moderate advance in the price of cot
ton. 1 ram points in southeastern Atlau
tie states some hesltonoy is reported in sup
plying goods before making collections for
the full sea-iou's business. The Pacific
coast makes another record in tho mutter
of exports of wheat, Tacoma having se
cured nn unusually largo proportion of
this business during lato weeks. Hun
Francisco wires that vessels are being
chartered there to proceed to Columbia
river in ballast to load with wheat.

Nkw Youk, Not. S3.- The volume of busi

caused a fraotional advance in the opening

the trading and a reaction quickly followed.
