In lHol Dr. McCosh was appointed pro
fessor of logic and metaphysics in Queen's
college, Belfast, Ireland. In 18(!S ho was
called to the presidency of Princeton col
lego, which position ho held for many
years until he was retired as president
emeritus, and succeeded in the active du
ties by the Hov. Dr. Francis L. Patton.
Dr. McCosh's career its president of tho
college of New Jersey was marked with
marvelous success. He elevated tho char
acter of tho institution, and instilled his
own enthusiasm into tho faculty and tho
pupils. His lltauagement impelled tho
respect of tho friends of tho unlverslty,and
during his presidency nearly $3,000,000
flowed to tho treasury In tho form of offer
ings and bequests.
During tho administration of Dr. Mc
Cosh the number givlug instruction in tho
college was Increased from ton professors,
four tutors nnd two teachers to thlrty-flvo
professors, three tutors and several assist
ants and lecturers In all upward of forty.
Tho luereaso in tho number of students
has been correspondingly great. In 18(17
tho eatalogtio of tho college estimated tho
number at 2(14. In 18b8, the year of Dr.
MoCosh's retiremont.tho catalogue showed
tho number of students to bo fiOl. During
the same period a great work was wrought
in tumplug out semi-barbarous collego
customs among the uudorgradttnto body,
some of which had come down from col
onial times nnd were copied from Kugland.
Graduntos and pupils vied in their ex
pressions of love anil reverence for Dr. Mo-
Coli, anil on the occasion of tho celobra
tiim of his KOth birthday, April 1, lWH.they
made an extraordinary display in his
honor.
Dr. McCosh has been tho author of a
largo number of philosophical and rtt
Ugious works. Two of his works on psy
chology are required textbooks in the Uni
versity of Calcutta, while steps aro being
taken to have them adopted in other col
legos In India. They aro also used In
Japan nnd Ceylon, and his collego lectures
on psychology and logic aro used in a great
many upper schools nud a number of col
leges in America.

CniCAOO, Nov. 17. The Initial steps
looking towards the curtailment of the
flour output, by a six weeks' suspension of
the merchant mills of tho country, were
taken at a meeting of millers ut the Audi
torium. The committee was unanimous
in agreeing that the price of flour was be
low a profit "leldlng point, nnd that homo
concerted action by the trudu was neces
sary to bring up tho price to a profit point,
and an agroiuont was f tinned to shut down
for n period of six weeks within the three
months beginning Deo. 10. The agreement
will be in force when mills representing a
production o f 150,000 barrels a day have
signed tho paper.
