Komarkable Statomont in tho Faco of Adverse Conditions, SOUNDNESS OF BUSINESS AMAZING. The Btoppagn uf ltnllway Traflle, th De lay In the Tarlrr Mill and the Work of MoIji lla Not rrodnoed the 1'araljaU Veared. New Youk, July 14. n. G. Dun & Co. 'a weekly review of trade says: When cir cumstances nre duly welshed the strength and soundness of business In this cduntry during the past two weeks are amazing, With the second city in the country In the hands of n lawless and murderous mob, besides many other cities and towns, with railway trnlllc almost en tirely stopped over the vast arerfbetwoen Toledo an the Pacific, with presidential proclamations declaring the existence of an lnsurrectlon.and the passionate answer ordering half a million to stop work, with a prolonged strike of coal miners not fully ended In many stales, and with dif ferences between the house and senate on the turlfT question so wide that the duties affecting manufacturers and mining can not be anticipated, Industries and trado have nevertheless gono on with subllmo confidence that the people and their gov ernment would soon restore order. The shrinkago of business and depression of values have been unexpectedly small, tho failures relatively few and unimportant, and there nro even signs in some Indus tries of actual progress toward recovery from prqvlous troubles. Wheat is slightly lower, in profound disregard of the government report indi cating n yield of loss thnn 400,000,000 bush els, and as the official estlmato of yield in 1693 was more than 100,000,000 bushels short of actual exports and consumption, it Is readily assumed thnt another discrep ancy as large may spring from similar causes. Receipts nnd exports in tho pres ent disturbed condition of business nre not slguillcant. The decrease In failures exhibited last week is followed by good returns for July thus far. lteported liabilities in tho first Ilvo days were only t811,5C7, though mall delays kept back some western returns. The number of failures during the past wceK have been 237 In the United States, against 874 for the same week last year. and 49 In Canada, against 25 last year. llraustreets' weekly review of trado says: During the greater portion of the week general wholesale business at Chicago and at centres within the terri tory tributary has been practically par alyzed by the railway strike. Larger east ern cities felt the effect of the tie up In re stricted receipts of live stock, meat and produce, while western manufacturers and merchants suffered loss through in ability to secure supplies and raw mater ials from tho east. The railroad strike and boycott In part repented the effects of the recent soft coal strike by shutting up a large number ol important Indus tries through want of fuel. But perhaps no more favorable time, from tho point of view of the merchant and manufacturer. than the midsummer of 1894, after the panic Beason in 1893 could have been chosen to precipitate so widespread n rail road tie up when business was already so generally and soverely restricted. Anum ber of small strikes are reported.but there are 25,000 fewer idle because of strikes on Friday this week than last. Iron, steel, lumber, shoes, wool and cotton manufacturing industries nt larger eastern and western centers have prac tically no shipments, and commercial travelers throughout the central western states generally have been compelled to leave the road. The world's stock of wheat has declined during tho past fourteen weeks about 6,000,000 bushels more than In tho llko portion of last year, which is significant In view of the insistence in the trade that Invisible domestic supplies nre almost ex hausted. Exports of wheat, flour In cluded, both coasts of United States and Canadn, this week equal 2,377,000 bushels, compared with 1,850,000 bushels last week. 4,134,000 bushels In the second week of July last year, 2,853,000 bushels In that week two years ago and 2,220,000 three years ago, Split on the Sugar. Washington, July 14. Tho Democratic tariff conferees put in a long day's work and did not adjourn until after 0 o'clock last evening. The greater part of the day Was devoted to a discussion of the sugar schedule, and no agreement was reached. The house managers of the conference have made a determined fight against tho one-eighth of a cent differential on re filled sugar, and the senate members of the conference have stood out very stub bornly for the schedule substantially as It was agreed to by the senate. All re ports Indicate that it Is going to be very difficult to reavh an agreement on this schedule, and the indications that a dis agreement will be reported on It are very decided.
