New York, J uly 7. Bradslreets' vreekly
review of trade says: Aside from the In
tervention or a holiday there Is a sharp
restriction of general trade and industrial ,
prodnctlon, duo to railway troubles vrest
of the Alleghrnles and north of the Ohio
river, which extend vrest and southweit
to the Pacific coast, and make their Influ
ence felt in all other directions. The com
bined railroad strike and boycott has had
a steadily increasing damaging Influence
npon the 'general industrial situation.
Calculations as to the number of men out
are necessarily not complete, but there is
little doubt that the total number Idle as
n result of this railway tie up far exceeds
the outcome of any previous labor trouble
in this country.
All cereals except wbcat nave sliovrn a
decided advance In prices. I'ork and lard
are up sharply, as are fruits, vegetables,
meats and other perishable produce. Pig
iron tv est is commanding twenty-five cent,
more per ton, nnd cattle, hogs and sheep
are noticeably higher, even at far western
markets, where receipts are restricted.
The foregoing featuies are mi st conspic
uous at Chicago and Pan Krnjiclsco, but
are having a very unfavorable effect at
Mlnneupolls.St. Paul,MUwnukee,Oniaha,
Kansas City, St. Louis and Cleveland.
General trade at New Orleans, Mobile,
Savannah, Nashville and Memphis lias
been unfavorably affected by the railway
tio up.
Favorable crop reports from Texas stim
ulates merchants to expect a good fall
trade. At the larger eastern centers there
is no material gain In the situation be
yond a speculative spurt in wool, which
increased the volume of sales ot
the samo at Boston to a total four
times as large as that reported in the
week a year ago. Six New England cities
shipped 105,000 cases of shoes last week,
against 10i,000 In the week a year ago.
One of the largtst cotton manufacturing
corporations in Iihode Island has closed
down for a week, Hnd other cotton mills
continue to pile up stocks.
The united States and Canada carried
over on July 1 fully 73,500,000 bushels of
wheat against , ft, COO, MX) bushels one year
ago and one-half to one-third as large
quantities visible in preceding years. The
total here, In Canada and afloat for
Europe July 1 was 140,519,000 bushels,
compared with 152,3011,000 bushels on(
year ago. With Australian sleeks in
cluded, the world's available wheat supply
July 1 was 154,310,000 bushels against 157,
203,000 bushels one year ago, when the to
tal was the largest on record for a like
date.
Business failures show a further de
crease within a week, the total being 101,
against 169 last week, 31D in the cor
responding week a year ago, and 152 in
the week two years ago. There were 35
failures reported from the Canadian Do
minion this week; last week the total was
S3; against 0 for the same week last year.
11. G. Dun Si Co.'s review of trade says:
The interruption of business by the rail'
road strikes has been such that the usual
signs, whether bright or gloomy, havi
little value. The senate has passed tlx
tariff bill, but in such a shape that no one
ventures to risk much on its final passag
without further alteration.
Speculation In products has turned
largely upon temporary uncertainties, but
meat products have been higher, with
threatened famine here, and the proba
bility that large quantities will he spoiled
at Chicago, while improved crop product)
have depressed wheat.
Tho iron industry had not yet leojvered
from the coal miners strikuulien it wu:
st rn usly interrupted by the blockade ot
railroads at the west. An obvious effeci
will be restriction of repairs and ca
building and of track laying. A large r
duction in tho demand for iron is the nat
ural consequences of the disturbances af
fecting the railway earnings.
Textile manufactures do not show im
provemeut, two important cotton m 11'
manufacturing colored goods liav.ng
stopped iudelinltely, while the unuio
stock of print cloths at Fall Iilver and
Providence has reached 1,004,000 pieces,
and a downward revision in prices ol
bleached sheetings is expected.

Washington, July 7. The bill for the

attention of tha houio all day yeiterday,
and it was passed by a very lurge major
ity. The only point of interest In the

reference to tho comiuilteo on ways and
means, but this was unattended by any
excitement or remarks. Several uulmpor
tant bills were passed. When the house

The committee on ways and moans held
n meeting ns soon as the tarilT Mil was re
ferred to them. It wni the expectation of
the Democrats that they would be able to
non-concur In the amendment!! In bulk at
ouco and report back to the house, asking
for a conference. They struck a snag at
ouce, however, and they do not know how
long they are going to be tied up. Thu
HepublicaiiH, as soon asnu cllort was made
to hasten the matter, dlschwed their pur
pose to delay the mutter as long as possi
ble. Mr. Heed and Mr. Hurrows demanded
the reading of the whole bill and the rend
ing had to bo proceeded with, to the
great disgust of the Democrats. How
ar Republicans cau interfere with tho
amendments being nnn-concurred In as a
wholo Is yet to bo developed. If the amend
ments have to be considered in detail it
will be a very long time before the Demo
crats can make their report.
