Companies Organized with the Avowed
Intention of 1'reventlnff Meetings In the
Streets llrowne Assumes a Defiant Attt
tuile Whleh May Lead to Trouble.
IlrATTSVlLLK, Md., Mny H. Hyott.
Tllle Is thoroughly aroused over the pres
ence of about 600 Coxeyites, who were
forced to leave WaahlnKton on Saturday.
They are encamped In the picturesque
grove known as Little Bpo, just outside of
the town limits. Serious trouble Is ex
pected at any hour, and last ntght three
companies of volunteers were organized.
Adjutant General Douglas, of Mary
land, was wired regarding the procuring of
arms and ammunition for the volunteers,
but no reply has been received, The citl
rens are determined to drive the Common
wealcrs out of the neighborhood, and are
prepared to use drastic menus to accom
plish that end, At a meeting held In
Camp Coxey yesterday afternoon the citl
rens who antagonized speechmaking by
Coxey and Browne In the streets of Hy
attsville Saturday evening were severely
denounced, and this has caused Increased
excitement In tho town. Browne de
clared that In twenty-four hours he would
speak in Hyattsville, and says ho will bo
heard in Dlaudenburg, a small town sep
arated from Hyattsville by the eastern
branch. The commissioners of that town
aro firm In declaring that he will not bo
allowed to spenk. Thirty deputies are
patroling the town of Hyattsville and
Ulandenburg.
Preparations have made at Camp Coxey
for a long stay, and reinforcements from
Galvin's, Kelly's and Fryo's divisions are
expected. Browne states that 5,000 men
will bo encamped hero Inside of five
days. A large crowd of visitors from
Washington and the surrounding coun
try was present at the reincarnation
services held nt the camp yesterday. An
admission of fifty cents was charged. Hy
attsville has never known such excite
ment, and the town was crowded all day.
Four of the Coxeyites were arrested in
llladensburg yesterday and locked up.
The men, for the most part, again slept
on the bare ground last night, but do not
complain so long as Coxey stands by
them. Coxcy's power over his men Is slm
ply phenominal, and they declare that
anything Is good enough for them It
Coxey Is pleased.

THE OPPOSITION TO HLIBU8TEBING
A Large Namber of Republican Senators, I
Together with Older Eastern Benators, I
Will Oppose Taetles Intended Only to I
Delay a Vote on the Amended Tariff 11111.
VASllINQTOK, May 14. Tho course of
the proceedings In the scuoto this week
will probably depend largely upon the re
sult of the Hepubllcau caucus to be held
tonight. The Democrats are hopeful that
the caucus will decide upon treating tho
tariff in what they consider "a business
like" maucr, and letting the bill proceed
upon Us course without as much speech-
making and without tho ellort at delay
which has been displayed by some of the
liepublican senators so far in the debate.
There is utiuuestionably a large ele
ment on the liepublican side of the senate
chamber opposed to any course which
macks iu the least of filibustering. This
element includes a large number of sen
ators from the west, and also a sprinkling
of the older eastern senators, who feci
that they have a record to sustain against
dilatory tactics. The younger Isow Kng-
land liepublican senators are, however.

no dilatory tnctlcs have yet been resorted
to, and thot none ore necessary, and they
will make a strong plea In caucus to con
tinue the program heretofore pursued In
discussing the bill.
If the conservotlvo clement In the Re
publican runks wins In the caucus the
present agreement as to hours for debate
will probably be observed. If tho opposite
party carries the day tho Democrats will
most likely renew their effort to extend
the hours and to force the lighting. Sena
tor Harris said today that In case there
were many more calls for a quorum from
the Republican side, or If long speeches
be continued, he would renew his 10 o'clock
motion, but he did not wish to do this as
long as there was any possibility of hold
ing the debate within legitimate bounds
Upon the decision of the caucus will,
therefore, depend whether the debate shall
proceed in a comparatively orderly man
ner and the bill be disposed of with some
dispatch or whether there Bhall be a gen
ernl scramble over hours for debate, and
with these changed a resort on the part of
the Republicans to all the devices which
this would permit to force the Democrats
from their course, If not to delay tho con
sideration of the bill,
Senator Aldrlch said today that he ex
pected the proceedings this week to be
very much on the order of those of last
week, lie did not believe there would be
an effort to change the hours, and he
thought the entire week would be devoted
to the chemical schedule, of which only
seven paragraphs out of the seventy-five
contained in it have been disposed of.
Appropriation bills will continue to
have the attention of the house during the
week unless the state bank element suc
ceeds in its efforts to have the Brawley
bill taken up Wednesday.
