GBTTINO DBBPJSR,.
Following the destructive uctiou it
took in relation to A nerlean linlm
trlee, Congress Iiad now decided that
no Americana uiml apply do far m tliu
protection of their Huwttlln Interests
are concerned, by approving President
Cleveland's policy, censuring ex-Mtn-inter
Stevens ttud ueetding against u
proteoloroteor auiicxatlon.
Gierefand and his Cougret are sink
iipg deeper Into popular disrepute every
day. Every step taken has been di
reeled against the Interests of the
people they weie elected to protect.
The Hawaiian Queen was deposed
because site constantly threatened the
VHt American and other interests of
the country and was not lit, morally
or mentally, to sit u;on the throne
TUi was and la the evidence iu the
ase, and nothing lias been brought
forward to weakeu or even contradict
It, yet the President of the Ualted
States ol to-day is upheld by the Deui
cratie Congress in eaylug that in
plte of this woman's deplorable men
tal and moral 0 .million, iu spite
f her hostile attitude towards
the American people, wlio are com
yelled to remain wlih 11 her dominion
on account of their industrial interests
there, she must be restored to the
throne.
The eullghtened and Industrious
people of Hawaii prostrated them
selves at the feet of ex-Piesldent
Harrison and begged of hint to protect
their MiirucIhI interests and their
families in their Isolated kingdom
from the ravages of a sovereign blind
to all sense of principle and justice
through a life of lust and debauchery.
Xx-President Harrison responded by
sending Minister Stevens and estab
lishing h Protectorate which has since
maintained a government of peace
and prosperity.
President Cleveland now steps'lin
and, prompted by the same uuloyal
spirit that moved him to restore the
colors taken from the rebels iu the
battles for the preservation of the
Union, lie tears down the barricade
which stood between the vicious Queen
and her victims and allows her to
devour them as she will.
Few Americans expected or wanted
annexation, but they did expect pro
nation in this ease, notwithstanding
H was denied them for the industries
at home.
The Lehigh Valley Coal Company
as paid to each of the women made
widows by the disaster at the York
Farm colliery in July, 1802, f 160, an
equivalent to a pension of three dollars
)ier week foroiie year, and $62 to each
of the children of the widows. Tills
is a doubly generous act, inasmuch
that the men killed were not members
f the company's relief association and
110 blame was attached to the com

spot in the disheartening relations be
tween capital and labor which are now
arousing the world In sympathy with
m latter.
Wk take this occasion to condole
1th District Attorney Ryan upon the

highly respected resident of Butler

age of 63 years and was one of the

growth ami prosperity of this country.

MBAL BILL I'M.
Govornmontnl Control of Congres
sional Elootions to Coaso,
THE HAWAIIAN POLICY INDORSED.
The McCreary ltpsolutlon, Condemning
Minister Steven and Upholding 1'refll
dent Cleveland')! Attitude, l'UMe the
House by a Strict l'nrty Vote
WAsmnoTOl.Feb. 8. The hill repealing.
In t-oto nil federal laws regulating the
control of congressional elections lias
passed irath bonnes of congress and only
awaits the signnturo of President Cleve
land to become a law. After several weeks
of discussion the sennte last evening 11
nalir came to a rote of the house bill re
pealing the federal election laws, and it
passed by a vote of 80 ayes to 88 nnys.
Numerous amendments were presented
by the ItepubllcHn members, but they
were voted down regulnrly and method
ically, the Democrats not even taking the
trouble to join In tbo debate on the amend
atory propositions. Senator Stewart, of
Nevada, voted with the Democrats on
every proposition, giving ns his lcnsons
that lie thought the power of the execu
tive was already too great, and that the
centrnlir.ing tendency of the age should be
checked at once If the republic is to sur
vive. The three Populists Senators Allen,
Kyle and PefTcr also voted with the Dem
ocrats on every amendment, as well a on
the main bill. The measure, as it passed
the senate, is identical with the bill as it
pnssed the house, no committee amend
ments having been proposed.
IJy a vote of 17(1 to 57 the house adopted
the McCreary resolution condemning
Minister Stevens and sustaining the Ha
waiian policy of President Cleveland, The
nepublicnns filibustered against it to the
end. U)H)ii the llrst vote the resolution
was curried, 174 to 8, and an interesting
parliamentary question was raised as to
whether 177 or 171) was not a quorum, four
seats being vacant on Recount of deaths.
The speaker held that a majority of the
members chosen and living constituted a
quorum, quoting in support of his posi
tion a review ot the subject made by ex
Speaker Iteed in the Fifty-first congress.
His position, however, was warmly as
sailed by some ot the Democratic mem
bers, and it wns finally agreed to take the
vole over ugnln, so that the ruling was
eventually withdrawn. The Doutelle re
solution wns defeated by a strict party
vote. After the voting upon these reso
lutions had been completed Mr. liluml
(Mo.) made nn attempt to get up his bill
for the coinage of the silver seigniorage
5n the treasury. The eastern Democrats,
leu oy Messrs. Tracey anil Cockran, in
augurated a filibuster in which they were
joined by the majority of the HenuhllcuriH.
although a few of the latter Indicated by
their votes that they favored a considera
tion of the bill, and for four hours Mr.
island and the remainder of the Demo
crats were held at bay.
landing that it wns impossible to se
cure a quorum to proceed with tlte con
sideration ol the bill and that the house
might, be deadlocked indefinitely upon
the proposition Mr. lllnnd directed his
cfTorts towards securing the adoption of a
it-solution to 1 evoke nil leaves of absence
and to instruct the sergeant-nt-arms to
arrest absentees. After a persistent strug
gle, which lasted until 7 o'clock, Air.
liluml was successful and the resolution
wns passed. In order to make it still more
effective the order was made a continuing
one until vacated by the house.
