had been salil was golrjK tu Up the tno-t
sensational event that ever took pliue be
tween liartieaaed homes, proved to be in
sensation at all, so far an the race Itself
was concerned. There was but one hnrw
in It. The only sensational part of the
day's program and arrangement was the
enormous crowd that gathered at the
Fleetwood track to see the iort. There
DlltEOTUM.
were between 0,000 and 7,000 peoplo pres
ent. It was, perhaps, us large an nssem
hlago as ever collectedntthatttack. There
were visitors present from Detroit, Chi
cago, St. Lous, Indianapolis, and even
from places as far away as Denver and
California.
Directum won tho toss for tho pole, and
when they were Bent awny in tho Ilrst heat
on the second scoring Directum got pretty
nearly half a length tho advantage. Kelly
was holding Directum's reins and An.
drews drove Mascot. Tho horf.es had not
niade over 100 yards when Mascot threw
up his heels in a shameful break and lost
five or six lengths by so doing. Kelly at
once took Directum back and held him
closd until Mascot recovered and got
within a length of hiln. Mascot broke
again and lost more ground.and Directum
had things ills own way to tho Ilntsh,
which he paaKed at least live lengths in
front of his opponent. The time for that
rnilo was 2.10.
Directum got a little the best of tho start
In the second heat, too, and held itoaRlly,
Kelly was taking things easy with Direc
turn, knowing that his adversary could
never overhaul him, and while AndrewM
tried his best Directum pnsssd under tho
wire fully four lengths to tho good. The
time for tho second heat was 2.07K.
The third heat was the only ono that
contained a tinge of interest. In this, as
in the other heats, Directum was from a
neck to half a length in advance when tho
racers were told to go, nnd that advant
age he increased to a good length beforo
the first turn had been rounded. Tho lxvir
ran for a hnlf mllo with Mascot's uoso
well on to tho wheels of DIrectuni's sulky,
and then the pacer was called upon to
move up.
Mascot showed a good hear and steady
movement. lie tried his best to do what
ho was bidden, but ns ho attempted to
Improvo his position Kelly made a slight
demand upon tho black horse, whoso
movement had been simply perfect from
the time that lie first made a scoring
under tho wire, and tlie black fellow shot
ahead liko a bullet, and within tho next
hundred feet left plenty of daylight be
tween his driver's back and the horbe that
was trying to win 150 from hiin. Going
up the hill on the oil side of the track
Directum increased his lead, going
smoothly, more like a machine in his per
fect motion than a living tiling, and when
Kelly had secured three lengths' advan
tage he let up a little bit on his charge.
X Mascot, however, kept going all the
time, and when they came into the stretch
Mascot had again lapped the leader.
Kelly gave another little push to his horse,
but Mascot continued to cling. Kelly then
saw that he would have to drive to win,
and for the first time during the match ho
compelled Directum to exert himself. The
horso responded splendidly, and opened a
gap of perhaps half a length between his
sulky and Mascot's uoso. This was nt a
point within a hundred yards of tho finish.
Andrews, although he knew that he was
beaten, kept his gelding moving, but could
not decrease the lead, and it was in those
positions that the contestants passed un
der the wire in tho third heat. The time
of the last heat was 2.08K-
Tho match was for 18,509 a side.
Another Interesting event was tho ten
mile trot of Pascal, the holder of the rec
ord for that distance, made at Stockton,
Cal., of 2T.2j. Yesterday Pascal made
the distance In 2fl. 15, thus knocking olf 1
mln. 8 seos. from tha world's record.
