The Philadelphia iVoWA American Bays it is the opinion of Senator Isham G. Harris, were the Vice President to assume the responsibility of putting an end to the disgraceful farce of which that Senator is so considerable a part, ! "he (the Vice President) would not live to do it." We doubt if the Vice President, not beluga member of the Senate, should be asked todo anything of thatkind. But we feellike assuring 2lr. Isham G. Harris that there will be no toleration of such opinions corn iug from a man deputed to make laws. The suggestion is u insult to the Amerloau people, who are not thugs, or asetwaluB, or even agents of treason in the sense that Mr. Harris was an agent of treason in 1861. There has been about euough of swash bucklering in the Senate for the present. With Morgan suggesting the duello without the slightest provoca tion, and Harris suggesting the possi bility ofaarasalnation in a contingency Impossible to arise in the Senate, the publlo is warned. These men are of course of no particular account. One is a bully and tbe other la a fraud. He was never anything else. But it is out of reason for the publlo, which Is not a bully or a fraud, to listen to such Insolence from Its deputies. It is wholly a work of supererogation for such men to advertise their respective -characters, for their characters are matters of hlstory, and there are thous-1 auda serving In our prisons to-day j lew guilty of crime than Ishnm 0. 1 Harris, who falsified the verdict of j the people of T nuesaee in 1861. i Thb present Industrial depression MU made serious Inroads upon the lMtae of tbe Baldwin works. Cardinal GiiinoNBatnlmnniet the other evening in Baltimore, given as one of the features of his stlverjubllee, took strong ground agitlnst a state ohtnch. The prosper t looks favorable to the beginning of voting on the amendments to the repeal bill by tomorrow. Senator Faulkner has leen ennvassing the senate with a view of ask ing tlmt body to fix a time when the vote ooiild foe taken, but concluded not to mnko this request, for the reason that he was of the opinion, after getting the views of va rious senators, that the speech making would be expedited by allowing the busi ness to drift. later inquiry confirms the prediction that none of t lie amendment will receive a sufficient vote to insure adoption, and It is possible that none of them will receive as high a vote us will be recorded in oppo sition to the bill. The reason for this statement is found in the fact that the silver men do not expect any of them to carry, and therefore consider it unneces sary to attempt to have any of them adopted. There is still some talk to the effect that some of the more conservative repealers would lie willing to aid in pre venting unconditional repeal by voting for some of the amendments, but a ma jority of the free coinage men are of the opinion that nothing can be agreed upon that would be advantageous to silver, anil many of them now announce their in tention of voting only for the free coinage amendment and of giving no countenance to any of the other amendments. Tho Republicans have abandoned all idea of introducing an amendment as a party measure. Mr. Sherman at one time thought it would be tvise policy on the part of the Republicans to offer a measure for the settlement of tho question, but lie snys now that he doubts the expediency of Interfering in any way with the repeal bill as it stands. lie thinks that authority should be given for bonds, but sees the difficulty of getting such a provision through at this time, and will in all proli ability not attempt it. The repeal Repub licans say to introduce an amendment at this time would certainly bring on a de bute which might prove interminable and result in the defeat of the bill. It is believed that if the voting on the amendments can bo begun early in the ses sion tomorrow the iinal vote can bo reached by Saturday at the latest, and the bill sent to the house for its action. When the hoiifeo shall havo acted upon the bill adjournment until tho beginning of the regular session on the lirst Monday in December will lie in order. There is very little doubt now that this adjournment will bo taken, although the Democratic mnnagera of the senate havo not yet given the subject sufllcient consideration to feel justified in making an ofllcial. announce ment. So geneVal is the desire on the part of senators and members to getaway that it would bo next to impossible to hold a quorum of either house m Washington, oven should it be attempted.
