TO DEMAND A REHEARING.
Dr. Ilurtselt Will Appeal to Homo for
His Old l'arlsh.
Nnw York. July 11. It is understood In
welt Informed Cathollo circles that Arch
bishop Corrlgan's refusal to restore Dr.
Hurtscll to his old parish at the request of
Dulegato Satolll will result In a demand
for a reopening of tho case nt the Roman
propaganda. Dr. Ilurtsoll is confident of
success, but mnny nro of a contrary opin
ion. Dr. Burtsell was tried nnd con
demned on charges springing from tho
JlcGlynn troubles.
Dr. Hurtscll hopes to convlneo tho
udgos In propaganda that those charges
have uo foundation in latv, because they
depended on the removal of Dr. JIcGlynn
from his parish without formal trial. Dr.
Mculynn was condemned without a Hear
ing, whloh is against tho law of the
church, and was excommunicated without
a proper trial, to which he was entitled.
The ban put upon his Cooper Union lec
tures depended for Its forco upon the legal
ity of removal and excommunication. Hut
as theso were Illegal all consequent nets of
tho authorities, dependent on them, were
Illegal.
If this reasoning prevails at Homo not
only will Dr. Hurtsell got back his parish,
but Dr. aiculynn will also return to fat.
Stephens'. Archbishop Corrignn Is said to
have no apprehension of these rovr rsos.
Dr. iMcGlynu attended mass last Jsun-
dny, lustead of ofllclatlng. It Is not known
if tlio bishop of llrooklyn refused him per
mission to say mass In public, but as this
is within a bishop's powers It is likely he
did. Dr. McGlynn cannot get permission
to say muss In public in any diocoso of
New York or New Jersey.

netting on tho fight had been exceed
ingly free during the day, nnd long boforo
tho men nppoared in tho ring n fortune
hung on the outcome of tho fight. For
forty-eight hours, despite the fact that
Griffin was n 10 to 7 favorite, Smith
gained friends with rapidity, nnd tho odds
came down to 100 to 00 In favor of Griffin.
Before tho contests began thoro wero
loud calls for Corbott, who jumped over
tho ropes and said:
"There Is n colored pugilist by tho namo
of Jackson who wants to fight mo. Jnck
son is not hero to talk for himself, but his
manager Is here. I want to say that I will
fight him, nml that I have n check for f 10,-

Jackson at any time or place."
At this moment "I'arson" Davloa cleared
the ropes amid mingled npplause and
htssos, and from tho center of the ring ho
proclaimed that Jackson had months ago
posted a forfeit for n fight with Corbott,
and that tho latter only required to state
the time.
"Put up your money," shouted Corbett:
"you know I have to light Mitchell Iu Do-

"Our money is up," responded tho "par

"I wnnt a forfeit," roared Corbett.
"Hero Is another forfeit," shouted tho
Davles, producing a big roll of bills nnd
untitling It to O'Mnlloy. "That is satis
factory," said tho latter, and thoannounco
ment was mado, nmld a torrent of cheer
ing, that Corbett nnd Jackson will meet in
November for a fight to a finish.
When this incident had concluded
Jimmy Barry, of Chicago, and Pnt Shea,
of Oregon, nppenred in tho ring for thotcn
round preiiminnry contest. It took only
four rounds for the Chicago boy to settle
Shea. It was a slugging match from start
to finish.
It was 10:43 when Griffin appeared in tho
ring, and Smith followed him a moment
later. Both men appeared to bo In the
very pink of condition. Griffin's seconds
were Jimmy Cnrroll, Dan Crecdcn nnd
Howos, nnd for Smith, Sam Fitzpatrick,
Joe Choynskl aud Seward Smith.
Time was called at 10:35. Smith moved
wildly, but Grllllii caught him with his
right and left In tlio face. Both men ex
changed body blows. Smith had the ad
vantage as the bell rung. v
In tho second round Smith started out
with a wild rush and Grlfiln swung, land'
lug on Smith's face, staggering him for tho
moment, following it with his right nnd
left in the face. Both men wero hammer
ing right und left when timo was called.
in tno tniru round urlliln led with a
good left on tho face, while Smith punched
wildly. Griffin landed a good right nnd
left on tho face, and both men punched
each other for a moment with vigor. Smith
was groggy nnd apparently tired of the
mill when the round ended.
Smith was still groggy when the boll
rang for tho fourth round, but he enmo up
bravely. Urlflln landed In his face with
right and left, followed up with a heavy
right on the breast and rushed his oppo
nent around the ring, bmitu Btnggered
when he reached tho center of tho arena,
nnd n heavy thrust in the wind nenrly
sent him to earth. Like n lion at bay,
however, lie turned on his opponent, and
with a wicked right lunge caught Griffin
full in tho face below the eye. Grlfiln
went down like a log nnd was twice
counted out before tho referee announced
tho light was Smith's.
It was five minutes before Grlfiln suffi
ciently recovered from his knock&ut so as
to bo able to walk out of the ring, and
when he reached the dressing room ho
fairly collapsed. Blood was (lowing freely
from nn ugly cut in the lip, and Dr. Davis
put in several stitches to close the severed
