0-year-old dauehter of Anson Holies, o

which she had with the rabid animal.
In cousequence the humble Holies apart

are saddened and dismayed. They arc
very poor.
Tho demon cat made its first nppenrnnce
In Manning avenue, when Mrs. Annie Tin
ner was wheeling her baby along on the
shady sld ot the stieet. The Hulmnl ran
across tho badly paved avenue, with fur
erect and the hmr on ita stubby tail stand
ing out, making it look thu size of u man's

""PS v E ",e street.
The animal ran down to N'6. 'M, "Which is
an apartment house. Ou the stoop in the
rdoorway sat Mrs, Cholllster with her baby
on ner lap.
The cat tiled to blto and scratch Mrs.
Cholllstcr's child, but the woman threw
her dress over the little one nnd thus pro
tected It lrom the mad pussy's teeth and
claws.
The unwelcome visitor then leaped over
Mrs. Chollister's shoulder and bounded
through the hall Into tho back yard. It
was thought that It hnd made Its escape
over the fence Into Grand street, and a
party of boys armed with sticks and clubs
started in pursuit.
Hut they did not think of looking In the
back cellar.
Mm. Holies soon after the excitement at
i tending these adventures told little Lydia
t to go to a closet in tho cellar. As the child
1 entered 'he cellar she spied the huge cat
j crouching in one comer. Mr. Holies' little
cirl is no exception to the general rule of
I children and is very fond ot cats,
j "I'retty pussy," she said, "corns here."
Pussy was not ut nil pretty, but it came
I to Lydia in a dirty yellow Hash. It sprang
ut her face and fastened Its claws lu her
neck. The child, with a scream of terror,
tbi ust the nnimnl away from her and pie
vented it from biting her face.
The cat now attacked the child's legs
Lydia retreated to the wall, tho beast pur
suing her. Her father, who was sawing
wood nearby, heard his daughter's shrieks
and ran to her. He found the cat with Its
teeth emliedded In the child's knee, growl
ing like a clog and presenting a terrifying
nppenrnnce. He kicked the cat nnd the
kick broke its hold. It retreated a fen
steps and launched itself full at -Mr. Holies'
head. He dodged nnd the cat shot by him
landing in the back yard ten feet nwiiy.
Mr. Holies picked up his Injured dangh
tor and hurried with her to Friedman's
drug store, about a block away. The
druirgist cauterized the wounds. They
were mostly on the child's left leg. The
cat had bitten the child below the knee,
making an ugly wound, nnd then had bit
ten and torn a huge p'ece of flesh out of
the knee. Lyd'n was completely prostiated
by pain nnd shock.
Another pursuing party hnd been organ
ized in tiie meantime, and this time it got
ou the light, tuul. It was headed by
G'eotge Bannon. Harmon found the cat
hiding in the yaid. He armed himself
w'h n bale stick and started to attack it
JIii'l pussy assumed the aggressive. It
ItHped full at Hannon's face. He ''ducked'
his bend and turning aimed a blow at the
demon tat. The cat dodged ths blow and
leaped at Bannon a second time. Again
lie avoided it and struck the cat with the
stick with such force that its skull was
fractured.
