Washington, May 10. Six senators and
five i-i'inwentHtlves calletl on Mr. Cleveland
yesterday before tho cabinet meeting. They
olieyed tho letter of tho president's new
rules and brought no constituents with
them. No attempts were made by persons
other than senators and representatives to
see the pret.Ident. It wus 11 very quiet day,
tho quietest at theWhitellotisei'lnce March
4. with tho exception of the period during
which tho president was absent in New
York and Chlcaxo.
One of those who saw tho president was
Ifepresentntive llynum, of Indiana. Ho
said ho whs slad tho president had taken
Mich decided action and he believed It
would be followed by similar orders from
the various cabinet oflicers. He honed it
would. Tho rush for ofllces ho said, is
greater than ever before, twice as great as
it was during tho first term of Mr. Cleve
land. It was his opinion that something
had to lie done to stop the rush in order to
allow the president to attend to the public
business.
They Must May In the Navy.
Washington, Muy 10. Secretary Her
bert hits determined that he will not grant
any leave of absence to naval officers to en
gage in privnto enterprises or accept em
ployment outside tho navy. This rule ap
plies to explorers like Lieutenant Peary as
well as to ollleers who arc employed by
manufacturing firms. Existing leaves of
that kind will not bo interfered with or
curtailed, but they will not be extended
under any circumstances. One naval of
ficer on leavo Is drawing $0,000 per annum
salary from the Cramps.
Commander Kolger is In the employ of
tho Harvey Nickel Plate Company, nt a
large salary. Secretary Herbert says that
some of the.e officers arc using their tal
ents aud the education and experience they
acquired at government expense in direct
competition with tho interests of tho gov
eminent, und that tho practice must 1)0
stopped. This rulo does not apply to naval
oflicois detailed us instructors at schools,
colli ges, or on school ships, but will termi
nate their connection with private enter
prises us the leaves hitherto granted ex
pire. Tho secretary of war is considering
the propriety of mnklnga similar rulu us to
anny oflicers.
Thu Atlalttn May go tn Nicaragua,
Wasiiixoton, .May 10. At the request
of the secretary of state thu secretary of
the navy has ordered the United States
cruiser Atlanta to Greytown, Nicaragua.
This step is taken in consequence of thu
existing revolutlou in Nicaragua. Grey
lown is tho eastern terminus of the Nica
ragua canal, and thu Atlanta goes there to
protect American citizens and American
interests. Secretary Gresham has no in
formation tending to create apptehenslon
of troubles nt Greytown, but as the revolu
tion seems to bo progressing, ho deemed it
n necessary step of precaution to have a
war vessel sent there.
AVlll Nut Stay In Honolulu.

Francisco on May 24.
Letters received by tho same mnll by
