A JUfcr REBUKE.
The TininltUqro did woll when it re
jcoted Iteproseiitative LoicIi'h propo
sition to reduce the snliiry of Dr. J.
O. Middle, the surgeon in chief and
superintendent of the Miners' Hos
pital tit Fountain Spring. Cinterva
tive llilnkoM lmvo r-ached the con
clusion that tlie Schuylkill Huven
ttttumuu Is rapidly building Ills
tomb and when lila present term of
olllee expires lie will he relegated to
the rear and heard of no more as a
prominent figure in Schuylkill county
polities. His conduct thus far lias
been that of a man whonoeks notoriety
unci he Is diverting his time from the
coushlerution of those tilings which
boar upon the Interests of his con
stituents to the more clownish tactics
of exploding veusatiouul liooim. His
trumpeting about the Philadelphia
le3tric trust, In wlrch the people of
Schuylkill havo no interest and his
uncalled for light with the committee
he oaused to be appointed were alone
sultlclent to worry his constituents,
nd now that he has unwurrantlyj
attacked the best institution the work
jug people of this part of the an
thrai'lte ooal field hus the people who
gent him to the Legislature must he
disgusted with him.
JtepresentH'lve Loach's attack on
j)p, 'IMMIe was m coawrdly as it was
unc.illed for. The grounds he put
forth to sustain his measure to reduce
'the salary, if true, should have been
uwsilaa a basli for Dr. Kiddle's re
moval, but Losch knew that the super
intendenthud in no wise exposed hlm-
-aelf to such a proceeding. He wanted
to get a slap at Dr. IJIddle and the
hospital management and did it under
i false mask of reform. The slap was
a hard one and Losch will fiud that
the voters of his own district as -well
as the miners throughout this 8ectlrm
jyill coutlnue to feel its smarting
fleets should he again come before
them as a candidate for pub'.ic oillce.
The faith of the peoptp. is as strong
in the management of the Miners'
Hosnllal to-day as It ever has been
and Dr. Blddle's popularity with them
was never greater. Mr. Losch's in
sinuationB that the Institution is
suileriug from neglect by reason of
the superintendent's trip to Europe
and huntinir and fishing trips are
obliterated by
the reports of people i
nrlin IpnVft the institution dallv alter I
receiving invaluable treatment. True, I
the doctor did go to "Europe and does !
absent himself from the hospital
occasionally, hut the color which Mr.
Losch put oil these trips 1b effectually
rubbed oft by the public letter of
Heber S. Thompson, vice presideut of
the hoard of trustees of the institution, j
in which he says:
J'Dr. Middle has never been abroad
Lut once in all the years of his service
in connection with the hospital and
then for about twelve weeks in which
he spent most of his time inspecting
the medical institutions of Europe,
notably the great hospitals of Vienna.
His health is not robust and the
trustees have urged him to take such
occasional recreation as is possible
without much absence from the hos
pital. This has probably given rise to
the charge ti his making huntingaud
ilshing excursions."
It is hoped Mr. Losch will soon ac
quire some good sense aid abandon
the bombastic tactics which have
marked his brief career In the Legis
lature. If he does not he will quit
the House with only n long record of
mistakes and silly charges to give his
constituents in return for the trust
which they have placed in him.
Meanwhile Dr. IMddle can rest as
sured that the people are well satisfied
with his work at the Miners' Hospital
and that they have no grounds upon
which they can rebuke blm in any
manner.
