MBOHA.NIOA.L voting. ? Voting by machine 1 a very d'fT r ettt tblun from "mar-hltae voting," m niaohlae method-) are understood In the current vocabulary describing the work nf political trickster. Batlirac tory trials of the Myers voting mtt'oliliie were mad Mt tbe rocent spring- elections In various towns and alties of New York State. The follow lug description of thH useful pleoe of meohiinlsm, and Its method of opera tion we Hnd In the New York Times: "Tbe Myers voting machine has six party column, with 35 knobs in each aoiumn, and by praselng one of the knob a vote it registered. In Presi denttal elector all are voted for by the ue of one knob. The machine in this state, therefore, hat a capioity to vote for 70 eandilate in each party, or 420 candidates in all. "The machine prevent repeating by au automatic arrangement, which looks each knob when It hag bn voted. Tn case of offleas where more than one U to be elected, as, for In stance) at tbe L wkport election lagt year, where Ave constable were to be elected, tbe machine my be arranged 90 that when the knobs have been pressed a many time) as there are men to be ohoen It is looked. Vot ing for any five constables locked the remaining constable knobi agulust the vote. "Ewh p 'lf leal ptrty hai a stand ard color. The party billot and tho support of the knob la pressed as fur as possible, and If pushed far uuough to register a vote It will sUy tliere, and the voter has evidence that the vote Is added with the mechanical counter in the sealed compartment. "The ballot of each party's candidates posted on the wall in front of the voter in upright oolumns a a guide In push ing In the knob, and the ballots are not bundled by any voter, nor by any member of the election board at any time. 'Split' tickets may be voted by simnlv ohatiKlug from the knobs of one color to thoae of another. "The machine is placed within the secret ballot laws. The claim is made that any Illiterate or even a blind voter can vote a straight ticket, a mixed tloket, or the part of a ticket A voter may also 'split' his Preeldpn tlal elector ticket or omit to vote for any ticket he pleases. Tn voting a ''split' ticket, the knobs of the indepen dent candidates are 11 rut pushed in. Then beginning at the top of the party column, the knobs for all the other officers are pushed in, omitting such as have been voted as 'split.' The names are arranged in the same order as those on the ticket published olll clally in the newspapers." Tiibub was enacted by the Legisla ture a law which forbids the sale of cigarettes to minors. That it has thus far proved a nullity is apparent from the faut that at nearly every turn boys of ten and twelve, and even younger, are met smoking the pernicious urti clea. Why is not the law onforoed? There are many and gross violations of it, and we oanuot but regard it as the duty ot the authorities to ascertain who are the parties that supply boys with olgarettes."
