Harrison's, (N. J.) Chief of Police Ordered
tn Close Tliuni Up.
Harbison, N. J., April 18. Never be
fore hns Harrison been so much aroused
over the pool room question ns nt present,
nnd nbout 1,000 persons, nil the room
would hold, were in tho council chamber
of the city hall when lawyer William J.
Davis called to order the mass meeting
which hud lieen called by Father O'Connor,
of the Church of the Holy Cross, to pro
test against the existence of pool rooms hi
the town.
It was a representative gathering of
Harrison and Kearny citizens, nnd more
than three quarters of them were men
whose hnir was tinged with gray and who
by close attention to the proceedings gave
evidence of their sincerity. One woman
was present. ,
The meetmgunanimouslyadoptedstronK-
ly worded resolutions denouncing tho pool
rooms ami requesting the meiuifers ol tue
common council of the town of Harrison
to instruct- the chief of police to-' cIomi them
nt once and for all time, and to ask the
Hudson county officials. to nid the chief of
police hy all means in their power.
A committee consisting o all tue clergy
men in the city was appointed, who at
tended the special meeting of tho common
council last night and presented the resolu
tions. The resolutions were received hy
the council, after whicli an order was is
sued to the cldef of police demanding that
he proceed at once to close all pool rooms
in the city and to see to it herealter that
they are kept closed.
It is generally believed here that life will
he mode a burden for anyone who should,
after to-day, attempt to open a pool room
within the borders of Harrison, as public
indignation is so thoroughly aroused that
the nuisance will no longer be tolerated.
