ent Fred O. Ileighley of the Oliver Coke
mid Furnace Company, referring to the
prospect of the Oliver plant No. 3 leaching
1 ,000 ovens, which wonld eclipse the 'fa
mous Standard plaut at Mt. Pleasant,
said: "It is estimated that if the plant was
operated every working day it would take
toity years to exhaust the ooal owned by
the company at this point and make proper
allowances for stiikes, repairs, etc., it is

YouNosTOWN, April 11. Chief of Police
Cantwell took charge of a 14-year-old boy
named Sullivun, but during the night the
lad escaiied from the police station. His
parents have been living here, coming from
Allegheny, where they kept a Apeak-easy.
Mrs. Sullivan married her present husband
two days after her first husband died in jail
at Pittsburg. Recently Sullivan returned
to Allegheny, started a upeak-easy and
is now serving time. The mother left
the lad to take care of himself uud ho has
been living on charity.
She Wanted to Make n Sacrifice.

God, Mary SlcUee, 40 years old, trier, to kill
her 4-year-old daughter Klinira and I j take
her own life. The cjild was nearly strang
led and had a narrow escape f; mi death.
Mrs. McGee is confined in the l'hiladelphia
hospital pending an examination aa to bar
sanity, and the child is in the care of the

Smallpox Sjireartlnu Again.
Reading, April 11. Smallpox has broken
out in the sou tin astern section of this city,
a district which up to this time had been
exempt. Owing to carelesaneas the disease
is again spreading. A man suilut ing with
smallpox was seen on the crowded streets
of tlim city on SaUrday evening and at
once taken to St. Joseph's hospital. Tho
disease has made its appearance iu Lees
port, n village nine ,ailes north of Heading,
to which it was carried by a family from
this city. There aro four cases iu tho vil

McKeksport. April 11. Ex-Councilman
W. II. Slmms, of this city, lias liecn miss
ing from bis home tor the past two weekB
and his frleuds are b-comlng uneasy. Mr.
Mmms left JlcKecsport for a vifcit to Cin
cinnati, intending to be gone but a lit tin
time. He is local acent of the American
E.press Company and a member of many
secret orders, lieing treasurer of several.
His friends fear he has met with foul play.

Heading, April 11. The Nuvcrslnk
Mountiun, overlooking this city, was on
fire in several places below the Highland
Hoime yesteiday. It was prevented from
spreading by the citizens of the southwest
ern section of the city, who turned out in
large numbers and succeeded in extinguish
ing the flames before they reached great
proportions. Doys are supposed to have
fired the dry leaves late Sunday afternoon.

Allegheny, April 11. In his answer to
the contest of James Hunter, of the Tenth
ward, this city, Select Councilman Kreiling
alleges that the contestant is not a citizen
of tiie United States. He says also that
the votes charged as being illegal by Hun
ter are all right and that if all the votes
improperly marked are thrown out Hunter
will have still less than he has now.

Blaiksville, April 11. Interviews with
prominent railroad officials disclose the fact
that instead of there being any removal of
the Pennsylvania railroad shops from this
place and the changing of the terminus to
bhendan there will instead be important
and extensive improvements made here.
Instead of Blalrsville being a doomed town
the reverse is the case; its prospects never
were brighter.

Waynksbubo, April 11. The defendants
in the Morgan fratricide ease, have been
sentenced. Thomas Morgan was given -th
maximum penally of twelve years in the
penitentiary. Two of the sisters, Rebecca
and Caroline, were given ten years each
aud Jennie three years.

Ban. ADril 11. The report that Presi
dent Cleveland had decided to appoint Ma
jor Walker, of this city, United State mar
shal for this district on the atreugtu of a
request from the widow of Hon. V. L.
Scott is denied by friends of the Scott
family.

Lebanon, April 11. The residence of
Cyrus Liohner, in South Lebanon township,
was destroyed by fire yesterday. The in
mates, Mr. Dohner and wife, were aroused
by unoke and made a narrow escape from
the burning building.

Lancaster, April 11. Henry Eahlemau,
a well-to-do farmer, committed suicide by
drowning himself in the cistern on his
farm. No cause is kuown for the act. He
was In good financial situation ai-d enjoyed
excellent health.

The Olean Times tells of a hemlock log
hauled to a mill near Austin recently that

The steamship Hekla which caused so

A little girl stuck a hat pin iu the back

touching the spine, Vensel has been suf

his mind. A resident of Butler is now suf
fering lvom paralysis, the result of a prac
tical joke of the same nature played on
him.
William W. Price, a guest at the Eag'e
hotel, Lock Haven, got out of bed and
raised a window to listen to a neighboring
serenade. He lenned too far out of the
window and losing his balance fell head
foremost, but was saved by the windo v
sasli falling and catching his ankle. He
was rescued after dangling n few minutes
by the hotel clerk.

dent occurred ut the Calvary cemetery dor
ing the luneral ceremonies attending the
lmrlal of Mrs. Mary Burke, of 4010 St
Ferdinand street. Alter entering the burial

hearse took fright, and, dragging the othei
along rau away. 'I he hearse was upset
and the coffin crashed through the glas
sido. Tim coffin was then carried by a
number of men to the grave.
Strikers Koturn to "Work.
Topkka, Kan., April 11, About 100 of
tho 500 men in the locomotlvo shops of
the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe rail
road, who struck Saturday returned to
work yesterday. None of the men iu the
carshops, who the machinists claimed,
would join them, are out to-day. Should
the strike continuo 1 r several days nearly
all of the men iu the carshops will bo laid
off as with the locor otive shops idle there
will be no work for them.

Ferry station lost her balance and fell
