New Jersey is to-day in a ferment
over the succesi of gamblers In her
Legislature. Meetings have been
called everywhere to denounce the
action of men who, by their votes
helped to fasten the stigma of Bhame
on one of the colonial states. When
the smoke of the battle passes the
flag of the honest and just will be
found floating proudly In the breeze.
"What is going on in New Jersey
exists in our own Commonwealth,
aye! right here in our community.
Gambling is carried on before thevery
eyes of the ofliclals, but they do not or
will not see it. We lend a weak voice
to the commendation of New Jetsey's
uprising against the "crack of the
slave-owner's lash" aud we hope the
men who are standing up nobly for the
decency and protection of the state
and people will rebuke those who defy
public sentiment in such n manner
that they will remember it forever and
they and their generations will ever
hear in mind that gambling threatens
libe rty more than anything else in
this land.
