square at the base and taper gradually
to the top.
It will be composed of rocks Illustrat
ing tho geological formation of the

World's Fair Exhibit.
In the center of the domo of tho gov
ernment building, rising up thirty feet
from the floor level, is the hollow trunk
of a giant redwood tree, twenty-ono
feet in diameter. Inside of its walls,
two feet in thidmess, is a very comfor
table sitting-room space. The walls
have been planed and the coiling of ono
compartment and the floor of that
above it are formed by a transverse
section of the tree, sixteen inches
thick. This section is held up by cro6s-
lections of railroad rails, and the in

leads upward through the ceiling to tho
second floor, and below a full-shod
single doorway has been cut from the

It Will He of the I'ompelnn Style of
Architecture.
The Vermont building at tho world's
fair vill bo, when completed, one of tho
most unique on the grounds, Tho style
is Poinpelan. On' tho right and loft of
the entrance are two shafts with alle
gorical flgures, representing agricul
ture and quarrying and stoneeutting
the two principal industries of the
stnte. Tho entrance is through a por
tico into a courtyard, in the center of
which is a handsome marble fountain.
Marble will also lie used all through
the interior. On the right and loft are

covered porches, olt which lead tho re
ception room, committee room, post
ofllee, etc. At tho end of the court in a
porch supported by flvo caryatids, on
which is a serai-circular Greek window
with a bas-relief around it, representing
freedom and unity. In the rear is tho
circular reception hall with wooden
beamed domo. To the efforts of Dr. II.
II. Jlclntyrc, of Vermont, and Col.
Aldaco V. Walker, of Chicago, is mainly
duo tho success of this building. .Inrvis
Hunt, of Uoston (nephew of William
Morris Hunt, the artist, and Richard M.
Hunt, architoct of tho administration
building), is the architect. This build
ing will be used for social purposes
only.

rived from San Domingo and will soon

of those brilliant land-lubbers who are

How the Spaniards ever succeeded in
reaching America in such a craft is

the O'Dounell trial opened its side of the
case this morning.

day was taken up in examination of news
paper reporters who were at the scene of

H. B. Ldyton, a Chicago reporter, saw
the detendaut in the rink about noon of
the day of the strike.
O'Dounell then told him that bIx Fink
