KruTrrA, Ua., Jan. 19, Not in 80
years or moro hag Atlanta had such days
as these. Tho city woke rcstorday to
ftnil two Indies of snow on tho ground,
and snow still falling rapidly. By 10
o'clock it was ho heavy that all the elec

tho cutirocity.
Busitioss was practically suspended.
Everybody Indulged In Btiowballlng, and
everybody who could improvise a sleigh
of any kind took a hand lu that sport no
unusual here.
The figures of the oldest Inhabitant
show that not sluce 1895 has Atlanta
known such a snow storm. It still con
tinues. .Realizing that tho unusual weather
meant suffering to many of Atlanta's poor
President J. O. Oglosby, of tho Commer
cial Club, issued a call for a citizens'

Last night the Ohambor of Qommerco
was crowded with representative niun,

SUFFERING IN CANADA.
The Contlnuoud C"ld Weather Causing
Great LHfltreiia Many Iroien to Death.
Qoehec, Jnn. 19. Never within the
memory of man has Canada suffered so
continuously from intense cold, weather
as during the last month. There hns
only been one break in tho intense cold
for the lait four weeks and, that wus for
two duys.
For 2(5 days with the exception just
made, the thermometer has been down
below zero and for the most of tho time It
has registered from fivo to twenty de
grees uolow.
Tho suffering among the poor in all
parts of tho country is great. Numborn
of peoplo have been frozen to death some,
including a man at Levis, In their beds.
Many of the streams are frozen solid
to tho bottom of their beds.
tVator .Scarce at St. Louis.
St. Louis, Jan. 19. If tho present cold
weather continues very much longer St.
Louis will be threatened with a water
famine equal to that which caused so
much suffering and inconvenience in
1884, when the supply of water in the
reservoirs was for some hours completely
exhausted.
Snowballing In Charleston.
Charleston, S. C, Jan. 19. Snow be

in Charleston for forty years.
HIS HEAD ALMOST TORN OFF.
Horrible Scene at the Execution of JIc
ran at Glasgow.
Glasgow, Jan. 19. A horrible sccno
occurred at tho execution of William Mc
Ewan for the murder of a woman at
West Pollokshiels. McEwnn, after com
mitting the crime, had attempted to com
mit suicide by cutting his throat. It was
thoughthe would die from the effect of the
wound, but the doctors succeeded in sav
ing him for the gallows, although his neck
wus left in a very weak condition.
When he was brought out for execu
tion the mark of the self-inflicted wound
could plainly be seen.
He walked without apparent fear to
the gallows aud the rope was adjusted.
When the bolt was drawn an awful
spectacle was witnessed, which caused
even the experienced prison officials to
turn pale. The man's head was nearly
torn off, and blood gushed out over bis
body and the gallows.
Death was instantaneous.
Much indignation is expressed against
the authorities for not having taken pre
cautions against such an occurence.
