tators, Including suveral of tho heads of

ber when tho Senate was called to order
after tho morning recess.
The Lleutcnnut-aovernor annonncod
that in nccordnnco with the United States
Statutes the Senate would proceed to
ballot for Senator. Each Senator wns
in his plnco and named bis cholco as
bis name wax called.
The result wis as follows : Total votes
oast, i!0; for Edward Murphy, jr., 17; loi
Frank IJiscock, 12 ; for Wliltelaw Held, 1.
Hie vote was u party vote with tho ex
ception of Senator Edwards who, in
voting for Mr. Held, said:
"It is sometimes agreeable to waive
personal preferences in ileferunco to tho
views of others; but in this case I see no
reason for doing It. I Intend to cast my
vote in the maimer that will, for me, best
answer the question : 'Who Is the llttont
man to represent tho Stnto in tho United
Stales Semite?' I therefore cast my
voto for that eminent diplomatist and
diKtinguished journalist, tho Hon.
Whitelaw Reid."

A resolution declaring that the best in
terests of tnls State require the early ro-
peal or suspension of tho act authorizing
the monthly purchase of sllvor bullion by
the United States, was adopted unani
mously. A recess of fifteen minutes was then
taken.
At 12 o'clock the House was called to
order. By this time it wns crowd
ed. There wero only two or three mem
hers absent, and the call was suspended
without sending for them.
Tho roll was then called for tho voto
for United States Senator and each man
rohe in his seat and named his choice.
When the Speakor formally announced
tho choice of tho House ns, for Edward
Murphy, jr., 73; for Frank Hlscock, 53;
there was general applause from tho
Democratic side of tho Houso.
The absentees were Messrs. Adams,
Dennistou and Vandovvater, all of whom
weru excused.

Joseph R. Hawley, Rep., 11; Carlos
French, Dem., 11.
Lieut.-Gov. Cady, Dem., in the Chair,
declared tho vote a tie.
In the House 23 1 votes wero cast, with
10 members absent. Hawley recolved
128, French, 103, Forbes, Pro., 1, and
there was ono pair.
To-day both housos moot In joint con
vention, and elect the Senator for six
years from March 4.

Albany, Jan. 18. The Court of Ap
peals has affirmed the judgment of tho
lower court lu the caso of James Hughes,
Master Workman of tbe Cutters and
Trimmers' branch of the K. of L., con
victed nnd senteuoed to one year in prison
for extortion in taking $1,000 from a
Rochester firm to defray the expense of
raising a boycott which had beeu declared
against the firm.

Indianapolis, Jan. 18. The L. E. St
W. stride has reached tho courts. Gen
eral Superintendent Hill has filed a peti
tion iu the United States Court against
Muucle strikers asking for a restraining
order to prevent them from interfering or
iu any way molesting the agents of the
company. Judge Baker issued a tempo
rary restraining order, returnable Jan. 25.
